Cascina La Famó, set in a peaceful, rural location about a kilometer from the small hilltop village of San Marzano Oliveto, is a fully-renovated, 200 year old farmhouse that is surrounded by vineyards on all sides. Situated in the heart of Italy's most productive wine region, Cascina La Famó is in an ideal place from which to explore the attractions of this unique region. There are many excellent restaurants nearby - two of them within walking distance - as well as numerous wine-producers that offer tours and wine tastings.
The wine towns of Nizza Monferrato and Canelli are both about a 10 minute drive away. Larger towns such as Alba, Asti and Acqui Terme are all within easy reach. Genoa and Turin are both about an hour away, and Milan can be reached in 90 minutes. To the south the beaches of the Italian Riviera are a day trip away, while the mountains on the border with France are about a 90 minute drive to the west.
The beautiful, unspoiled 5 hectare (12.5 acre) estate at Cascina La Famó includes 2.5 hectares of organic hazelnut trees as well as Moscato and Freisa vineyards, apple orchards and numerous olive trees.
Our 45 square meter (450 square foot) first-floor apartment sleeps 3 and has views over the neighboring vineyards. It has high chestnut-beamed ceilings that give an airy, spacious feel, and includes a sitting / dining room with a separate kitchen area, a double bedroom and a modern bathroom with a large shower.
Our 84 square meter swimming pool includes a shallow 'relax zone': the main swimming area of 15 x 5 meters has a constant depth of 1.4 meters. The pool is surrounded by a large stone terrace with fine views, equipped with sun loungers, umbrellas and a changing cabin. The pool is open to guests between May 10th and October 10th each year.
In addition to the pool terrace, the apartment has the exclusive use of an adjacent first-floor outdoor terrace that is equipped with a table, 4 chairs and a large sun umbrella.
A similar, slightly smaller apartment is also available at a lower cost: please contact us for details.
We just loved our recent stay at Cascina La Famo!
We stayed there for 6 days in October, 2014.
The apartment itself had everything we needed. It was very clean, comfortable and beautiful.
It's a very peaceful and scenic location, surrounded by hazelnut trees and vineyards. We spent a lot of time enjoying the immediate area, with it's friendly wine producers and hilltop villages. It was also a really short drive to Alba, Asti and the barolo wine producing region. Their is also a very convenient supermarket minutes away by car if ever you want to stay home in the evenings and cook some food to pair with the wine(s) you bought that day. An excellent local butcher and traditional grocery shop can also be found walking distance from the apartment in the nearby village.
The owners are extremely friendly and helpful and provided us with excellent suggestions!
Wish we could have stayed longer. We really look forward to our next stay there!
This was our first trip to Piemonte and we were looking for a good home base for 5 nights that would allow us to enjoy the countryside but yet put us within easy reach of Asti, Alba, La Morra, etc. The Alba apartment fit the bill nicely for us. It was very comfortable and was equipped with everything we needed, including be able to prepare morning coffee and some dinners.
Gerald and Angelika were extremely helpful and flexible with us (at the end of the season) as we changed our dates several times. When we arrived they provided recommendations about restaurants and places to shop and do laundry (the Alba apartment does not have a washing machine).
The apartment was very well-appointed and even nicer in person than the pictures indicate. Everything was very clean and well-maintained. The shower worked well and was much larger than most others we encountered during our 3-week trip. The Tuscan kitchen is very nice in that you can close the doors and not have the appliances staring at you, but it is definitely small. However, it was more than adequate for cooking dinners for 2 on 4 nights of our stay. The wi-fi worked perfectly.
Our main regret was that the time flew by and we did not do all that we would have liked. We would definitely recommend Cascina la Famo and would return there ourselves.
We are an Irish couple and we stayed in Apt ALBA for 2 weeks in July 2012. Cascina La Famo is in a lovely quiet location. It was perfect for us, very clean, private and spacious. It was well-equipped and had everything we needed. The pool area is beautiful and very well-kept. The owners, Gerald and Angelika, are a lovely couple, very helpful but not intrusive. It is an ideal base for exploring this part of Piedmont, being within easy reach of Asti, Alba, Nizza Monferrato and Acqui Terme. There are plenty of excellent restaurants in the area. San Marzano Oliveto is within walking distance (15 minutes) and is a lovely quiet village. We would definitely like to return here next summer. We flew into Malpensa and it was about 2 hours easy drive from there.
We spent 6 days at the lovely Alba apartment and enjoyed it very much. We were traveling with our 4 year old daughter and it was quite suitable for children. The owners are very nice and extremely helpful. They make an extra effort to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.
The apartment is beautiful and just as it looks in the pictures if not nicer because it truly has been lovingly restored and updated. The setting is extraordinary. It is charming, quiet, and it is a great location for exploring the surrounding area. We found some great restuarants and wineries nearby, also easy to drive to Turin and Milan. We would recommend it, and hope to return.
I have stayed there twice with my wife. Our first visit was at summer 2009 and the second time at summer 2011. On the second visit we had our son with us who was eight months at the time. On both times we spend seven nights at the location.
We have found Cascina La Famo as an excellent base for one day trips around the Piedmont area. The nearby San Marzano Oliveto village has several traditional Piedmont style farmhouse restaurants and they serve delicious homemade dinners with excellent house vines. In addition there are a couple of fine dining restaurants with a bit more modern touch into the Piedmont kitchen. And as all wine friends know the area is full of excellent vineyards to visit.
Cascina La Famo has exceeded our expectations by providing well maintained and clean apartment level accommodation. All the pictures provided by the owners resemble the true condition of the apartments and the house. According to my knowledge it is not common to have a full size pool at old farm houses on the area. At Cascina La Famo they do and it is always in a good condition. The owners are extremely friendly and helpful. The “concierge” service they have provided in perfect English was very valuable.
You should however know that a car with up-to-date GPS is required to stay at Cascina La Famo.
We stayed at Cascina La Famo for nine days, in the "Asti" apartment. It exceeded all of our expectations.
The Farm is over 200 years old and was completely renovated several years ago - everything was beautifully done and the furnishings are high-end: down comfortors & pillows, comfy furniture, granite and stainless steel in the kitchen, luxurious bath (we are always thrilled to have both plenty of hot water and pressure).
Ours was the smaller of the two apartments (the owners live in the third), but it felt spacious - high-beamed ceilings, open floor plan, everything beautifully and tastefully done.
Gerald is British and Angelika Austrian and both are lovely people and great communicators. Before we arrived, we had become e-mail friends as I asked many, many questions and had them all answered. They could not have been more friendly and helpful. A sampling: they will give you a detailed area map and explain it to you; they have a booklet of information both about the apartment and the area; their lovely daughter loaned us her GPS; they were always gracious and helpful for things such as restaurant reservations (we had a memorable lunch at a wonderful place); they will tell you about each town or city and its points of interest.
We found it immensely helpful that the owners lived on the property. We had our own patio, which was great for reading & visiting. The property itself is beautiful, surrounded by vineyards.
As Angelika said, Piedmont has the beauty and peacefulness of the country "but the infrastructure of the city." A highlight was our trip (recommended) to Mombaruzzo - home of the Amaretto almond, where we bought cookies from the source!
We would like to give Cascino La Famo our highest recommendation. We hope to return to Piedmont on another trip, and we would not consider staying anywhere else. It is a perfect, romantic getaway for a couple - also seeking adventure.
