Overview

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom w/KING bed, 1 Bath, Hot tub, HD TV, WiFi, QUEEN sofabed, A/C

You will love it here! Casa Montoya is a very romantic, charming adobe vacation rental house 3 blocks from historic Taos Plaza. WiFi - HiDef TV - Netflix. The tall cottonwood trees in the backyard keep the house cool in summer and provide a graceful backdrop for the private hot tub. If it's too hot, we have A.C. Watch the stars in the private hot tub - there's a tall fence surrounding it. Two nights to two or three weeks, but we do not offer monthly rentals since our cleaning crew needs steady work - and they're the best.

The high-end furniture, including a KING bed guests rave about, is a suave mixing of old country charm and sophisticated, comfortable furnishings designed by an award-winning designer from Paris. Cook a great meal in the big kitchen which is fully equipped, and let the dishwasher do the dishes - or walk to the wonderful restaurants nearby. The bathroom (tub and shower) has Mexican tile and hand-painted sink. The floors in the house are wood (a little squeaky but they're old) and Saltillo tile and the ceilings are wood. You'll sleep well in the King bed in the bedroom with four big pillows and three small ones. For more than two guests, there's a Queen sofa bed in the living room, which guests tell us is very comfortable. The brick patio is for outdoor eating or relaxing in summertime. The gas BBQ grill is easy to use. The red living room furniture surrounds a Kiva gas fireplace - just turn the knob (inside the Kiva) counterclockwise if it gets chilly. Of course, we also have a furnace - just adjust the thermostat on the wall.

You can enjoy a romantic weekend or longer vacation and delight in all the amenities of home in this 'magical, enchanting abode' (words of a guest.) There's a small casita in the back of the property which I sometimes rent out, but so far only fabulous people have been drawn to this property on Montoya Street.

Bring your laptop: we have wifi. If your favorite TV show is on while you'll be out, just record it. We have Dish Hi Definition TV with DVR. And Netflix! There's also a CD stereo player, dishwasher, gas grill, humidifier, yoga mat, 8 & 10 lb. weights, iron and ironing board, full-length mirror, hair dryer, ski rack in the entryway and portable bathroom heater. Cooking utensils, linens and towels are also provided and be sure to check the fridge and cupboards before grocery shopping. There's a Brita pitcher for pure, filtered drinking water (Taos water tastes unpleasant.) The laundry room has a washer and dryer and laundry detergent is supplied.

This is a non-smoking rental. A dog (well... maybe two) is welcome but there is a flat pet fee. Smaller casita vacation rental is next door. VRBO listing #143844.

If you want a larger place that's about the same price as Casa Montoya, check out my daughter Winton's Casa Paloma. It has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and you'll love Winton's sweet energy. Go to VRBO Listing #262087.

Considered 'sacred' by many of the residents, Taos Mountain is a world-class ski resort. Taos has a rich history and cultural heritage, with numerous galleries, museums and festivals you can walk to from Casa Montoya. You'll love this place - only fabulous people have stayed here!

About Ellen Wood

My wonderful, beautiful daughter Winton has been managing Casa Montoya and Casita Montoya for me for quite a few years now - but it's time for her to move on so at this time I'm managing them myself. Since 2007 I've been writing and giving inspirational talks (about growing younger and living happy!) and I'm currently writing my second book. Can I brag a little? My audio book, 'Think and Grow Young - Powerful Steps to Create a Life of Joy' won the 2011 gold Nautilus Award and I am blessed with four children, two stepchildren, two foster daughters, 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. And for you, I'll do my best to make sure the rentals are well stocked and super clean.

Ellen Wood purchased this house in 2004

Why Ellen Wood chose New Mexico

There's no place more magical or inspiring than Taos! I live 35 miles north of Taos in the boonies but I get to Taos at least once a week - usually to babysit Winton's two precious little girls and go to the supermarket.

What makes this house unique

In the summer it's always cool and toasty warm in winter!

Guestbook comments from the owner

(from an e-mail sent 5/3/06)

Ellen,

Dee and I forgot to write anything in your little red book but we had a wonderful time and staying in Casa Montoya was extremly very pleasurable. Staying at Casa Montoya versus "suite" hotel is a no brainer.. Casa Montoya is far more relaxing..

We did recommend you to a couple that we met at the Apple Tree at dinner on Saturday..They had never heard of the idea of staying in a house but liked it and we gave them the web site and Casa Montoya name.. Hope they stay as they were nice people.

Best of luck and we will be back..

Beautiful clean little gem on a side street within walking distance to Taos Historical Area

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time to stay here. It is at a quieter location than downtown within walking distance. The only caution I would mention, Each room in this darling cottage is a different level so you have to remember to step up on down when changing rooms. Also for the noise sensitive, all of the wood floor squeak a lot. For us this just added to the charm but for those with mobility or vision issues it might be a problem.

Review from our Dogs Cameo and Malcolm

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Ellen for letting us come on vacation with our mom and dad. We always miss them when they leave without us, and its hard for to have fun. When we get to vacation with them it is very special!

We were so close to so many places we got to walk to Taos Plaza in the morning and eat lunch on the patio at a restaurant. Lots of strangers got to pet us and give us love. Taos loves dogs!

That evening we got to hang out in the yard while mom and dad were in the hot tub, we could tell that they were very relaxed. They put our bed out there and we took a nap while they took a dip.

There was so much room to walk around in the house, it was like being at home, it was nice and cool when the afternoons got to hot for us and so comfy!

Thank you for sharing your house with us for our very first family vacation!

Very neat, clean and relaxing!!!

  • 5 of 5

We were surprised that EVERYTHING you could imagine you wanted or needed was there. It was a very comforting place to call home for a few days and nights. Our dog especially

enjoyed being in a house rather than a hotel room. We came home rejuvenated.

Sweet, comfortable, close to town

  • 5 of 5

It is a very sweet place to stay! The bed and fold out couch a very comfortable, the kitchen is even stocked with food, the hot tub at night to watch the stars was lovely, and the gas fireplace was a treat! The owner has paid attention to every detail and has made our stay easy, welcoming and comfortable. It's an easy walk into town and is located on a quiet street. Thank you for sharing your little house with us!

Car: recommended

A.C. COOL in summer, Ski nearby at Taos Mountain in winter, visit the museums, galleries, shops and casinos, and stroll around historic Taos Plaza. Enjoy good, healthy organic foods from Cid's, a large health good supermarket. Visit one of the world's highest bridges, which spans the Rio Grande. Also must see: Wild Rivers Recreation Area, a deep canyon where the Rio Grande meets Red River and is great for hikers with lots of energy. Great Sand Dunes National Park is just over the border in Colorado.
