Tranquility is a perfect place to enjoy the serenity of St. John in a pristine little villa loaded with charm and creature comforts. A truly unique island experience awaits visitors wishing to relax in a natural and beautiful setting where care and sensitivity to the environment have made Tranquility a special retreat for the eye and soul.
Situated all by itself on a little knoll in Fish Bay overlooking the Bay, its recently refurnished interior reflects the best of Caribbean simplicity in taste and design with a full kitchen, lovely dining area, cozy den, bedroom suite and a large bathroom.
Tranquility is nestled in the trees on a hillside above Fish Bay on the one side and the luxuriously secluded Reef Bay on the other. Fish Bay is a quiet residential area on the south shore with a mix of full time residences and vacation villas and only 10 minutes from Cruz Bay, making it very convenient for trips to the beach or dinner in town. The National Parks' virgin forests and beaches are close by. It is a private, romantic and unique little villa with high ceilings and 1,000 + sq ft of living space, which includes wrap around decks for sunning, sunset viewing over the water in Fish Bay and stargazing.
While the house is surrounded by big shade trees to the back and sides, offering complete privacy - there are no other houses in sight - the front view of the Bay affords a clear vista of the water and a full panorama of the incredible night sky. Fall asleep to the gentle sounds of the virgin forest and wake to the soft sounds of birds singing.
More than half of our guests have been honeymoon couples who have thoroughly enjoyed the romantic and tropical appeal of Tranquility, with its spectacular sunsets and expansive views of the night sky from the verandah and surrounding decks. The villa can also accommodate a small family - the futon in the den opens to a full size double bed with an overhead ceiling fan to cool the room, which opens onto the front verandah with a view of the bay. The den is a completely separate room with louvered doors and access to the large bathroom through its' own door. The bath can be accessed from the kitchen hallway so it is not necessary to go through the den. There is also a twin size daybed in the master suite which now has a brand new King size Heavenly bed for your comfort.
Tranquility is an oasis of natural beauty year round. Recently equipped with air conditioning in the large master suite for the benefit of summer guests it is still possible to enjoy the natural cooling provided by the canopy of native shade trees and the glorious trade winds wafting through the open and spacious little home. Tranquility is eco friendly, designed to take full advantage of the cooling breezes; solar panels heat the water and a short nature walk along a garden path to the large (15 x 30')pool carries you through an herb garden. Guests are welcome to pick fresh basil and other herbs for their salads.
Tranquility's builder was a fine craftsman, which is reflected in the beautiful floors inlaid from a gorgeous selection of South American hardwoods and other distinctive touches of a true artisan. Tranquility has been decorated by the cottage owner, who is a local artist of international renown and whose artwork enhances the easy charm and comfort of this well appointed vacation villa. All furnishings, fixtures and linens are new and fresh. The artist's husband has landscaped many of the finest properties on the island including nearby Guavaberry Farms which is a veritable Garden of Eden.
A short footpath through the native, tropical forest leads you to our big 15’ by 30' swimming pool, which you may have all to yourself.
Another short walk takes you down a path to the breathtaking Reef Bay within the National Park. Reef Bay has a luxurious, long beach and is a shell seeker’s dream. Off the beaten path and with no roads directly to the beach, it is possible to have the famous National Park beach all to your self!
A guest comments, 'We very much appreciated coming 'home' in the evening and relaxing on the balcony to the sounds of nature; we also ate breakfast there have loved our hideaway holiday. From each hazy dawn to every sleepy diamond starred night ...Tranquility describes it perfectly.'

“These were eleven of the most perfect days that we have ever experienced! … This was our honeymoon and reunion all at the same time. Needless to say, we had high expectations and the trip far exceeded those expectations. Tranquility was the perfect home for us, we loved everything about it. Perfect house, perfect location, perfect hosts, perfect everything. Highlights of the trip include the hike to Reef Bay… Salt Pond beach, Coral Bay … Francis Bay, seeing rainbows on our porch after the brief rainstorms, and of course the pool. Thank you to the Rutniks for their hospitality. We want to tell everyone about this place, but we also want to keep it a secret. It’s that good. Already planning our first anniversary,”

“Best honeymoon ever! Definitely the trip of a lifetime—highlights: Dinghy rental—totally worth the expense. Reef Bay trail was gorgeous. Saw many mongoose and other creatures. Fed carrots to the donkeys—they’re quite tame! Leinster Bay trail was fun and easy—Waterlemon was nice. A day on the Lameshur Beach was relaxing and fun. Early mornings on the balcony at “home” were gorgeous—as were the cool breezes at night. Thanks so much!!”

We have lived on St. John for over 40 years and have raised our family here. Our island experience is unique and has given us a special relationship to the people, the culture and the environment of St. John. My husband is currently in real estate, he has served in the Governor's cabinet and owned and operated a family landscaping company for years. I am an internationally exhibited artist with a large collection of paintings, prints, collage but currently working in video and other contemporary media. Our grandchildren live nearby and our daughter works for Starwood Vacation Club at the Westin, St. John.
The Owner purchased this house in 2004
We chose to buy Tranquility because it's location is convenient to everything, within walking distance of Reef Bay and yet only 10 minutes from town. It is a perfect retreat on a lovely little knoll and offers privacy and the peacefulness one desires when seeking a relaxing and picturesque place to unwind and savor nature's blessings. It is a spacious little house with wonderful shade and heavenly breezes all year round and yet enjoys a lovely view of the bay and a phenomenal view of the starry nights we are so fortunate to have the benefit of without any collateral lighting or obstructions. It's heaven on earth.
Incredible serenity - lovely view of the Bay, breezy with shade trees all around, peaceful and private - sky view that is sensational - no collateral light sources to obstruct your stargazing - unique and authentic experience of the timeless beauty that St. John has to offer. Tranquility is within walking distance of Reef Bay beach and only a short distance from Cruz Bay and the National Park beaches.
The ambiance and location of Tranquility was perfect for us!
St. John offers beautiful beaches and hikes. Also surprisingly fabulous restaurants.
Staying at Tranquility gave us the perfect base to operate from.
The owners were accommodating and lovely to work with.
The location, comfort ,amenities and design of the "beach house".....plus great hikes close by made our holiday!
At times, we need to take a break from the lives we are living, to slow down the pace a notch or two. Resonate for you? Then, look no further. This
St. John villa is the balm to soothe your body and soul.
Described as a romantic villa, which is most certainly true, this rental is a sensorial delight. Each aesthetic detail of this thoughtfully-decorated home, truly how you feel once you set foot inside, is beyond the advertised pictures. From the art on the walls to the fabric of the armchair upholstery to the cherry wood bathroom paneling, one feels pampered by the owners who take pride in their property, as well as respect you as a renter. The bamboo shades, the rooster-motif light plates, the leather-bound guest books, and the linen tablecloths and napkins pre-set on the dinette table are other special touches. Stocked shelves of varied genres of books and CDs were provided for our entertainment. Clean and well-maintained both inside and out- this villa is so lovely!
As for the villa’s surroundings, it is nestled in a hill with magnificent views of lush vegetation. Sitting on the deck whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you will find yourself making friends with nature- looking out for your favorite bird whose visits are second only to those of the precious geckos who carry out their business without ever becoming a nuisance. The flowers and the brain coral sit nearby taking in the view alongside you.
The owners of this fine property were most gracious, offering us their private pool as a change from swimming at the beaches. They provided a tome of information about what to do and where to go in the form of a well-organized binder of typed content, flyers, and maps. After perusing the materials they supplied, we found a visit to the ruins of the sugar plantation at Annaberg and a sampling of the conch fritters at a stand nearby most memorable. Beach hopping and hiking were also fun.
Although the villa’s kitchen is well-stocked allowing for cooking and eating in which we did during our stay, some favorite meals were had at the Lime Inn and High Tide; the mahi-mahi at these restaurants can’t be beat! If you want to experience an exquisite tasting ice cream-try lavender honey vanilla at the homemade ice cream shop. Savoring my last mouthful, I thought about transporting this otherworldly treat home. I will just have to return along with the friends and family to whom I have recommended this wonderful getaway!
Imagine Paradise, then book it. It is here on St. John. We spent a week at Tranquilite we will never forget. It felt like we had our own private beach, private pool and a gas grill. Little geckos and tree frogs will greet you at dusk to welcome the night and the soft trade winds at night will lull you to sleep. Hummingbirds on the deck will make your mornings. The beaches will amaze. The people born raised and those relocated to this little piece of heaven will welcome you with open arms. The intricate mosaics on the nightstands to the various wood inlays in the closet and floor make this villa exquisite. I would recommend the snorkeling at Hawksnest Beach and Waterlemon Cay. I would also recommend renting a vehicle with enough ground clearance like a Jeep 4x4, there are speed bumps on the island and a few dips in the paved roads.
Villa Tranquilite was a very pleasant home for our recent stay on St. John. The house is in very fine shape, nicely outfitted, and much bigger than it appears in the photos. The pool that is available is simply lovely and surrounded by trees, plants, and flowers, providing welcome privacy and shade. The short path down to the pool is a bit treacherous, but so are most of the trails on the island! Several evenings and early mornings I sat on the house's patio just listening to the beautiful chorus of tree frogs, insects, and birds. It really is a wonderful place to stay.
We have rented a lot of places over the years and this was by far the best. We enjoyed the peace and quiet at the house, with beautiful views. The house is very comfortable and well equiped. The location is perfect for exploring the island. There are just no words to adequately describe how perfect it was. We will definately be back!!
Janet and Andy have created a heavenly get away in Fish Bay. They also happen to be two of the nicest and most generous hosts we have ever met.
It is a spectacular property, just perfect in every detail. My wife and I spent 8 days there and we had an amazing time exploring the entire island. The deck, which wraps around the whole house is the highlight providing beautiful star gazing at night, and amazing sunsets and sunrises. Perched on top of a hill overlooking Fish Bay, you feel like you're in a tree house. The pool was also a nice option if we felt too lazy to head down to the beach.
Also, Andy and Janet know everyone on the island and have explored every beach, have hiked every trail, and snorkeled every reef. They'll help you plan out an amazing, once in a lifetime experience.
I really couldn't recommend this property higher. We will be back! (which is why I'm a bit reticent to post this review because I don't want everyone to rent out this place when we want to go!!!)
Fish Bay is a quiet residential area with a mix of full time residences and vacation villas. While not far from town, Tranquility is situated all by itself on a little knoll with a lovely view of the Bay and the surrounding foliage. A short footpath through the native, tropical forest will take you to the big 15 by 30' swimming pool, which you will usually have all to yourself. Other short walks will take you to Reef Bay, Cocoloba Beach, Fish Bay, Ditleff Point and hiking trails through the National Park. The cottage's big verandah provides fantastic views of the starlite night sky where you may sit and relax or take your dinner. Speaking of dinner, Tranquility is only 10 minutes from Cruz Bay, making it very conveniently located for dining on the town. There are many fine restaurants, shops and art galleries to enjoy in the evening as well as by day and it is an easy trek from here to there with all roads paved.
