Cozy, old charm, steep driveway, spacious dock.

  • 4 of 5

I booked this place in order to have one last get together before my boyfriend goes to the Navy. Everyone had a great time! The house had everything we needed and there was more than enough space for 9 people. We loved the proximity to the water. The driveway is pretty steep, so make sure your car is good with steep hills before you drive it down. The house has some old charm, which overall made it very cozy!

Owner's Response: I appreciate the review and so glad you enjoyed the lake house. The driveway does have a steep incline but it is paved so it has never presented a problem to any of our other renters over the past 10 years. Winter .. ice and snow might present a problem but renters who want to rent in the winter are made aware this could present a problem.

Used to be loved - now unclean and unsafe

  • 2 of 5

I've been staying in rental properties at SML for many years - I'm familiar with what to expect as far as normal bugs (spider crickets/spiders) and steepness of the houses on their hills, etc. The positives of this house are that the hill is reasonable and it does have fun activities provided, such as ping pong table, paddle boat, canoe, and kayak.

Unfortunately, it appears that the house hasn't been taken care in a long time (note most + reviews are old). The top deck of the dock sways a LOT when you walk on it, it's clearly no longer secure or safe. The floating dock is so water logged that no more than 2 adults can stand on it at a time before it sinks. The property also had numerous bottles of trash inside, around the yard, and even in the bedrooms. I don't know if the cleaning service simply didn't come before we arrived or just doesn't do a detailed job - because there was a lot of dirt inside - especially the bedrooms where a couple were so gross that one of our guests didn't want to sleep there and ended up sleeping on the sofa. The mattresses are very old and uncomfortable. The stairwell has black mold and there was endless bugs (50 mosquitoes each AM in bathroom sink, millipeads, etc.)

For full disclosure, a small portion of my deposit was not returned to me. I'm sure the owner is going to say this review is because of that - but it is not; I wanted to wait to ensure the deposit - which is mailed via check after your stay, was returned before leaving it. I have never left a bad review before; I wanted to warn others.

The reason for my deposit not being returned was because the dishwasher wasn't run and the sink was full of dishes. However. the property had ONE dishwasher tab for our 4 day stay. We used that tab with a full dishwasher, loaded the next load and left a few items still in the sink that wouldn't fit. The owner didn't provide a necessity and as a result a portion of our deposit wasn't returned.

Further, we had to enter the house thru a window when we arrived. We never received entrance instructions - the owner says she sent it to us in a contract but HA doesn't use contracts. I never received information and assumed it would be obvious when we arrived; however, after calling the owner several times as well as HomeAway customer service we were noted as what they refer to as "stranded travelers" because the owner did not give them the information for entrance either. We did receive a call from the owner THE NEXT DAY.

Owner's Response: I regret that Stacy did not get all the information about renting our house I know she rented it in June and so it is easy to forget or misplace information, i.e the place she should have found the key. We have rented for 10 years and that was the first time I had to keep a portion of the deposit...only $50.00 to cover the house cleaning fee. The house is exterminated each Spring. It is located in a wooded lot and an occasional cricket or insect could happen...never had a complaint before. It is a lake house, cleaned before each renter and as I tell my renters it is not a 4-star hotel and I am sure most people would not want that at a lake. I would think that counting mosquitoes each morning would take away for precious time on the deck with a hot cup of coffee..

Awesome location!

  • 4 of 5

This was our first visit to SML and we absolutely loved it! The lake is gorgeous, the water is warm, clean and clear. We loved the wooded lot and the cove the house is on for swimming, boating, tubing, and kayaking. It is also close to a couple pretty good restaurants either by driving or boating. The house has a nice deck and lovely views of the water. The house itself was fine and had what we needed. The rental fee was pretty inexpensive which was also a plus. The house is not fancy and is definitely a lake cottage. Also, as other people mentioned the stairs to the house, down to the water, and even the ones in the house were very steep. The steps to the water are made of railroad ties which were uneven. If you have toddlers or older people who have trouble with stairs this is not the best house for you. Also, since there really is no place to walk into the water everyone needs to be comfortable swimming in deep water. The owners were very nice and attentive when we had questions.

family reunion at SML

  • 5 of 5

we rented "making memories" and "jordan's chalet" during the same week. we had 11-16 people between the two houses - with family coming and going. we rented to run-a-bouts and had great fun sharing adventure, good food, and excellent camarderie!! Hopefully, we will get the chance to do it again. Accommodations at both houses were wonderful. We particularly enjoyed the ample sleeping arrangements and jumping off the upper docks at both houses. Both coves are remarkably quiet and offer extremely pleasant views. We love SML!!

Made Our Own Memories - Manassas, VA

  • 5 of 5

Wow, where do I start? First, the owners were very responsive, friendly, and helpful. The reservation process was painless.

The house itself was clean, comfortable, and well-stocked with linens, books, games, and even water toys (noodles, floaties), sunscreen, and citronella candles. All you need bring is toiletries and paper products (paper towels, etc.). There are 2 tables and plenty of chairs on the deck and patio, and more chairs and loungers in the dock area. The second fridge in the dock area made it easy to grab ice and drinks while we were down there without having to go all the way back up to the house. There's also a fire pit and wood (on the side of the house) that we liked to roast marshmallows over.

The location can't be beat. (The map on my display of this site doesn't show the location for some reason.) Bridgewater Plaza and Parrot Cove Marina are about 10 or 15 minutes by water and by car. We rented a boat and jet ski, and the person driving the car arrived back at the house about the same time the person bringing the boat did. There's a grocery store and gas station about 10 minutes away, too, which made food runs very convenient. Bridgewater Plaza has a restaurant, pizza place, shops, a bar, arcade, mini golf, and a midway with a rock climbing wall and games. Great for kids and adults.

The home's setting is almost magical--situated on a quiet, deep cove right off the main channel. It's safe for swimmers and paddleboaters, yet convenient for power boats/jet skis. Early mornings and evening sunsets were gorgeous! We spent a great deal of time swimming and jumping/diving off the docks.

Be aware that there is no sandy beach-type access to the water. If you have a non-swimmer in your group, he/she can still cool off in the water via concrete steps into the wading area, but I'd suggest water shoes as the shore is rocky. Also, you'll get a good workout going up/down the steps between the house and dock.

There's no WiFi, but our cell phones worked fine. If you need internet to check email, you'll need a cell. I brought my Nook thinking I'd download a magazine/book, but a.) didn't have the connection, b.) there are plenty of books/magazines in the house, and c.) didn't have time anyway. I was having way too much fun with other things!

The house lives up to its name, and we definitely plan to return next summer. We had a fabulous time; and I would highly recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Your review made all our efforts to offer a great vacation spot for our renters well worthwhile. Our family has made so many wonderful memories at the lake and we hope others do also. The pedal boat, as well as the canoe are for our patrons to use. We love tooling around the cove - watching the sunset. Thanks again for your review and we look forwarding to hearing from you next summer or before... Thanks, the Wimmers.
