Location & Distances:
South Bowers is located 2 hours south of Philadelphia and 2.5 hours East of Washington DC. It is one hour closer to DC than Rehoboth and two hours closer than Ocean City! We'll send detailed directions. You can use Google Maps or Mapquest to find 'South Bowers Beach; 19963'.
South Bowers is one hour directly east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and is situated near Milford for convenient hassle-free shopping. Local day trip opportunities include:
0) BEST - the US Air Force Air Mobility Command - climb inside and around dozens of old AF planes! Climb inside! Great exhibits - perfect for the young or old !!
1) Relax on your nearly private beach and enjoy the sun, swimming, shell collecting, walking and running, or volleyball. Plan to relax at south Bowers. It is very quiet, and lets you get as “away from it all” as you want to be.
2) Day-trip fishing with the Bowers Beach fishing fleet – go to some of the best fishing spots on the Delaware Bay and bring home some dinner! (walk 0.1 mile with special arrangement for pier-side pickups, or drive 20 minutes to the town and its fleet (& eclectic restaurants).

15) Ocean City MD And Bethany Beach are about 1.5 hours away if you really want to see lots of people crowding onto the beaches and restaurants. Then come back to the relaxing quiet of South Bowers Island. Walk on the empty beaches and recharge your energy levels.
16) Kids 7-12: Solve the 'mystery of the sea captains treasure'. His note in the guest book is the first clue.
Note that the Delaware Bay is a tidal bay and at South Bowers has virtually no unsafe undertow or strong waves except near the river entrances. This means body-surfing opportunities are limited (like, none) but the water is clean and calm. The semi-private beaches are NOT monitored, so you need to be your own lifeguard even though there are also no real waves. The South Bowers area also has some of the cleanest water in the Delaware Bay! Swimming is great at HIGH Tide. Swim shoes recommended at all times. Miles of tidal pools are visible at low tide.
NOTE: You do not need to purchase the additional damage insurance unless you want to. VRBO pushes this product and profits by it. I include a refundable $250 damage deposit in the rental contract.
We have a group of 5 that gets together twice a year. We all live in different parts of the country, so are weekends are a great time to catch up. This house was a perfect match for our group. The balconies on the front and back provided views of the bay and wetlands and are perfect for porch sitting as on of our group calls it. One of our group enjoyed the hot tub daily and really enjoyed having that available. The kitchen is well stocked with all the utensils and dinnerware you need. The large open area upstairs is great for the group to sit around and relax.
David is very responsive to questions and concerns. As we were all traveling by air to the house David arranged to have linens delivered to the house. When there were questions, David responded immediately even once late at night on our arrival day.
Our favorite restaurants were J.P's Wharf, just on the other side of the inlet from the house. The food was consistently very good and the oysters were the best, declared by one of our group has tried them all over the country. Our favorite breakfast place was West Side Restaurant, small homey, friendly staff and great food.
I would definitely recommend this house for any size group from 2- 16. It is quiet. There is a great abundance of birds and we also saw turtles almost daily. As we were there in May, the horse shoe craps were spawning and they lined the shoreline.
Thank you to Dave and to Amy(the house cleaner) for making our stay very comfortable and pleasant.
Great place on the water for a large group of people. Views in every direction from the top floor and lots of amenities including hot tubs and fishing gear. Wildlife in the area abounds. Great place for a romantic getaway or a group fun. Owners are very responsive in assisting you in having a great time.
My husband I spent a week at David and Sophie's lovely home in April. David was kind enough to allow us to rent from Wed to Wed due to my husband's schedule. He is so easy to deal with and everything is done quickly. The home is gorgeous and the upstairs living area is to die for. I couldn't stop staring out the windows. The house is very large and since it was only the two of us we pretty much just used upstairs. The big tub in the master is awesome and inspired us to put one in our house! Loved all the different decks and porches. Depending on time of day, we rotated around to different places. The beach is quaint. We found seaglass every day and helped turn over horseshoe crabs. The house is within easy driving to Ocean City, Maryland and Rehoboth Beach. David was gracious enough to check in on us as soon as we arrived and alerted us to an upcoming meteor event. We hope to come back with a bigger group as the house is perfect for any size party! Thanks, David!!
When I was looking for a family beach house vacation rental near Dover, Delaware, I certainly was lucky to have found this one. We wanted a house, not a hotel so that we could all be together for my husband's driving experience at Dover Racetrack. Our family was very comfortable staying here because of the location to the Dover Racetrack ( approx. 30 minute drive) and the perfect accomodations for a lot of people. The small community was very quiet & picturesque. It is situated about 5 miles east from the main road on Delaware Bay. Although it is not on the ocean, it was definitely what we wanted for a serene vacation. The house was clean, beautifully decorated, & had all the amenities a family would need. The owner was very informative & helpful when I had a question to ask. I would recommend this house for all that it was & because it is in between the attractions of Dover and the ocean beaches a little further south.
The house is nice and the views fabulous, it is close to the water and we found alot of nice sea shells, it is fun to watch the tide come and go, We had 14 people and we fit perfectly, We decided last minute to do our mini vacation between Christmas & New Year and Dave was flexiable and letting us rent on short notice, the only complaint I heard was from my 6 children wishing it was Summetime, but the sunrises were great even in the cold weather and we didn't have to get as early to see them. The listing description & pictures are correct
Since we are looking to stay again in 2012 I figured I am long overdue for a review. I first have to say the house is amazing! We loved the large open floor plan upstairs. Both decks, lower and upper provide a great view of the bay. We even caught a glimpse of military aircrafts flying to and from the base. Hot tub was a nice added bonus. We took advantage of that as the night winded down. Beach was great, shells all over and crabs mingling around. David and Sophie, the owners, were fantastic with their communication, answered all questions we had and made sure we were happy with our stay It was so relaxing; I think no one wanted to leave. It turned out to be an excellent family get together and we can’t wait to go back. Thank you!
