House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)
This home is a rare find. From the moment you enter, your senses are overwhelmed by the natural beauty all around you. This retreat is situated on a 40 foot cliff overlooking Lake Superior. Local folks call it 'the glass house' due to the 180 degree views of Lake Superior.
Close enough to the Lutsen Ski Resort to enjoy all the amenities yet far enough to be away from all the crowds for some quiet time. The exterior walls are 65% windows with views of the lake and woods. A 10 by 15 foot skylight washes the main room with light. The total effect is that you are inside but feel at one with nature.
In the Great Room is a full kitchen, two dining areas, a gas fireplace, and a wonderful couch area under the skylight. The windows, with a beautiful view of the water, are framed with window seating. Under the window seats are many books sure to interest every reader, plus many games for the whole family to play. The bedrooms, which are separated by the Great Room, have queen beds and private full bathrooms. The master bath has a steam shower plus a whirlpool, over-sized, deep-soaking bathtub that overlooks the lake.

This property was built by Mary Ruth Barton in 1989 and held by the family partnership until 2015 when Mary Ruth's daughter, Kittie, through her Kittie Frantz Trust, purchased it from her siblings in a private sale. She knows you'll love to spend time there as much as she and her family does.

Great family bonding!
We originally rented this home with the intent on skiing at Lutsen...with temps well below zero, that thought was changed to hanging at the house and playing card games for 2 days! It was wonderful! With 4 kids, 3 of them being teenagers, it's hard to capture that much time together. I actually started and finished reading a book as well, just sitting by the fire. Loved the views of Lake Superior...with the cold temps that we are having, there was so much steam coming off the lake, it was a pretty cool sight! We will plan to rent this home in the summer to be able to enjoy the outdoors as well!
Great place - beautiful home
Our family stayed here for the week of the 4th, unbelievable views, home is custom designed to maximize views of Lake Superior. Home is super clean and well maintained. Location is near many activities, and a short drive to Grand Marais and the Gunflimt Trail. We would highly recommend to anyone considering staying in the area.
Thank you so much for the review!
Great place, tired furnishings
We stayed here more than 10 years ago, and loved it. To celebrate our 40th anniversary we returned this year. We were very disappointed in the lack of furnishing updates. There were very few places to sit that were comfortable enough to gaze at the lake, read, or just take in the great light. Everything is pretty much unchanged and very sun bleached. The main couch cushions were so worn out that it was hard to get up from sitting there.
The house itself is as architectural beauty. New furnishings would bring it up to par with other VRBO properties in this price range. We have recommended this property to several friends, but will not in the future. We did contact the owner and the manager about our issues, but never received a response.
We were saddened by Ms. Brodeen’s post because in her email to us she asked “If you are interested in our thoughts, please let me know.” Since we are happy with our home and the quality of it's furnishings we did not respond. We have had only one other comment about the Henredon sectional and that was from an elderly gentleman who said it was too low for him. We spent $300 to put higher couch legs on it, as we felt it was a good suggestion, and we like it even better now. It seemed to us that every person has different likes and dislikes about furniture. The good news is that my sister is taking her player piano and we will put a queen sized hide-a-bed couch in that great room. We will strive for something between the softness of the Henredon and the firmness of the other couch so everyone’s level of comfortable can be accommodated.
My wife and I stayed 2 nights in this gorgeous home and had a terrific experience. I read the other reviews and want to add a few points for future renters considering this property. We had dramatic changes in weather from mid 60s on Saturday to mid 30s (with some snow) on Sunday and Monday morning and we never had any trouble with the heating/hot water system. Just read the instructions that are provided - it's very straightforward. During our April visit, It was unseasonably warm and the patio chairs were not set out when we arrived. We called the caretaker to ask for help and she returned my call quickly and soon we were lounging on the patio looking at the lake. The pictures do show the spectacular view, but it's impossible to appreciate how close the windows are to the cliff until you're actually in the house. If you want to visit the north shore for a view of the lake, this is the place to rent. You can see very far North and East and it feels like you're hovering over the lake thanks to the size of the windows. The windows were very clean and offered crisp views. (Note that you can't access the lake from the house because of the cliff and the landscaping.) When we had 20 mph winds, I could have sat there all day watching and listening to the waves crash. Also, I didn't realize prior to arrival that the house is very close to the bend in the paved bike trail so if you're a biker, that's a definite bonus. I didn't see other renters comment on the steam shower -- it's terrific. It's easy to use, works very well and is very relaxing. If you're staying with two couples, the layout of the house offers perfect privacy with a bedroom and bathroom on either side of the great room. If you haven't been to the North Shore before, this rental is close to everything. In just a few days we hit State Parks, Lutsen ski resort, and Grand Marais and never felt like we had too much driving to do. I think this house fits the definition of a "getaway" destination perfectly. There are neighbors, but you can't really see them - we never did. We'll certainly rent this home again.
Relaxing get away on the shores of Lake Superior.
This home was a wonderful find! We loved the sunlit living room, comfortable furnishings and layout of the home. It's conveniently located near Lutsen, Grand Marais and great hiking. This will stay in my "favorites" folder!
We did have to learn how to manage the skylight venting but once we switched to manual it was great.
A beautiful, serene, and welcoming property!
We enjoyed a relaxing (but too brief!) summertime visit to the Horizon house. This is a beautiful, serene, and welcoming property. We found it to be a great base for exploring the region and appreciated learning more about its special history, as well.
Thanks to the Owners for the timely responses to our inquiries, the very helpful info provided, and for allowing us to share in those stunning Lake Superior sunrises!
Safe to say the area and Horizon have four very happy new converts!
Directly on Lake Superior this home is 2 miles away from the Lutsen Ski Resort with its 18 hole golf course, alpine slide and many activities. The property is right on the bike path. A peregrine falcon nesting place is near by. Grand Marais is 18 miles further down the highway providing water activities and where a number of artists spend creative hours. The gunflint trail starts in that town and the boundary water canoe trips are legendary.
