About Chris and Cori

We are a family of 4 from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Cori owns/operates a private yoga studio and often brings clients/small groups to Samara where she hosts amazing yoga retreats. My name is Chris and was a former minor pro hockey player who now works in oil/gas accounting in Calgary. Our children both play hockey and soccer and enjoy travelling to Samara so that they can surf, go beachcoming and play at the pool.

Chris and Cori purchased this condo in 2008

Why Chris and Cori chose Guanacaste

The main reason we bought this property was clearly for the ocean view as well as for the quick access to the beach and town. We travelled to several other countries in search of a vacation home and quickly fell in love with Costa Rica. After spending two vacations visiting many beach towns down the pacific coast we realized that Samara was by far our favorite place to be. It's a quaint surf town with all the necessary amenities and great restaurants we were looking for, and the reef protected waters make swimming very safe for our young family. And as we've all discovered, it's a perfect beach to learn to surf!

Location, View & Comfort

  • 4 of 5

US: Experienced worldwide HA/VRBOers.

Well located. Comfortable at the mid-level. WOW view. Three floor walkup.

Easy to find, can (and we did) walk to Samara center every night, few minutes to drive to Playa Corrillo.

The ACs worked well, but be sure to drop shades in the morning. Even then be prepared for a warm welcome in the late afternoon, but it soon cooled off. Open window and door for cool breeze.

For us, for a beach holiday condo it had a dark feel (especially the bathrooms). Could use more light throughout. The master BR (comfortable king bed) only had one night table and dim lamp - it really needs two tables and two bright lights.

Guest BR is very small; the two beds just fit and it is an inside room with a sliding glass window that opens over the couch. Wouldn’t want to use as an adult.

No usual amenities like bars of soap (one and 1/4 hand soap pumps doesn't cut it) or coffee/tea.

Safe compound with friendly guards (one changed our flat tire).

Manager was sick when we arrived. The substitute was friendly and tried but we missed out on a detailed briefing on the condo and the area. Manager did call and check up on us. Unclear on how to work TV and WiFi and there was no written instructions. Not enough toilet paper or paper towel or napkins. We asked for more and got the same day.

The coffee pot didn’t work the first morning (bad start for us). Contacted owner who arranged for same day replacement (kudos). The known problem was hard water - should have checked out coffee pot before our arrival. Washing machine also fills very, very slowly, assume same water problem. Towels were left in the dryer, lint filter was disgusting and the area was dirty.

Advice. Skip Playa Samara and head for Playa Corrillo (you can take a public bus). Go to the S end and stake out your area in paradise under the palms. Buy fresh ceviche from Edgar, the fisherman who walks the beach each day and try the local snow cone complete w/marshmallow.

In town eat on the beach at Gusto's (we did three times). Excellent seared tuna, good drinks and service. Skip Lo Que Hay - service, food and drinks were sub-par and they could care less when told. Must have home made ice cream and sorbet at Casa Mayou or a BBQ wrap at SubXpress - both across from Gusto's.

Lock your car always with nothing showing. Met a Canadian couple whose camera was stolen while they were inside the Samara market - right on the main street.

Overall — would return and recommend.

This condo is just as depicted ...within walking distance to beach, with a fantastic view of the beach. Very safe; gated & guarded at all times. Owners are very responsive, and everyone to a person was helpful & friendly. Pool is beautiful also. Would definitely recommend!

vacation of a lifetime, comfort and wilderness in one package

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4, traveling with 2 boys age 10 and 14, from Chicago, USA, first time in Costa Rica. Even though we are seasoned travelers, we like comforts of civilization, and kids like their WiFi and swimming pool, and sleeping with AC. The apartment is everything we wished for. Its very large, clean and modern, uncluttered but cozy, well stacked with good quality linens and other necessities. . The view is unrivaled - this is the only high rise (of a whooping 3 stories building) in Samara, and the entire coast at your feet once you are up for breakfast. Unforgettable sunsets there too, from all windows. Comfortable well stacked kitchen. Very comfortable couches, and sitting at night with windows open listening to the ocean is heavenly. Everything works. Beds are very comfortable, showers are nice and hot, parking huge and secure. There is tons of beach supplies, which we used all the time. It is an easy walk to town and beach (10 min max) but we drove due to my prior foot injury. Its about 2-4 min drive and ample parking everywhere, even during Christmas day. (If you are there for it, we recommend making reservation at Gusto's around 5:30 to watch sunset on the beach and have a fantastic dinner. But this and 24th would be the only days reservations are needed) ) We used Donde Javi Tours (506 8533-5215) and had an unforgettable river kayaking and turtle hatching trips with a small local company working only with our family for the same price as large tours. Wingnut zipline trip was another hit with boys, as well as trip to Carillo beach. What made this stay especially pleasant is care and attention of Nick Jonsson, apartment manager. He provided us with very detailed instructions in advance, checked upon us when we drove, met us at the apartment, gave us all the locals recommendations, shortcuts, tips for everything regarding food, tours, and everything else. Nick checked up with us through our stay as well. He was a perfect manager, attentive but non intrusive, always responsive and present when needed, organized and relaxed at the same time. We used all his recommendations and lived in paradise for 5 days. We got so relaxed that we forgot all 4 our winter coats and left to Arenal without it, and Nick went at length to organize its delivery to the airport with some local bus. We are already planing to come back next Christmas for a longer time. Thank you, Chris and Nick! We loved your place!

Samara Condo

Great clean, secure condo in Samara with phenomenal views of playa Samara. Condo building staff was very accommodating. Property manager was super responsive and helpful communicating details of the condo as well as helping us get acclimated to the condo itself as well as the local surroundings.

Great place to stay! Better than pictures!

  • 5 of 5

The owners were very responsive and provided lots of information prior to our arrival. When we got to the condo we met Nick and the cleaning lady (Evelyn). Both of them were so hospitable and welcoming. The place was super clean and was even better than the on-line photos. There were so many extras throughout the condo that made our stay even better. We all LOVED the pool (especially the kids) and the views were simply amazing. The walk down to the beach was no problem but if you want to bring a lot of stuff with you it might be easier to drive otherwise I would suggest early morning walks to the beach. Our only problem was that we didn't see any howler monkeys from the condo but we sure heard them. When we come back we will stay here again.
