Dale and Jean have always enjoyed country life. Although they live near Charlotte, High Country Haven provides a wonderfully relaxing mountain retreat to share with friends and family. They welcome you to escape and enjoy their cozy mountain home.
Jean purchased this House in 2007
What makes this House unique
Often times, at dusk, you will see a family of deer leaping through the the front yard of the beautifully landscaped 3 acres. After sunset, the privacy of the woods and lack of street lights allow you to clearly gaze at the millions of twinkling stars in the dark night sky. Although you have seclusion, you are only a few miles from a grocery store, Walmart and Lowes, as well as many restaurants and site seeing destinations. 30 minutes from Boone and 45 minutes from Blowing Rock.

lovely cabin-however we ran into some problems
We loved the location and charm of this little getaway house in the North Western area of North Carolina. I was attracted to the property for the wooded area, the fireplace, and the grill. We planned to spend Christmas here with our son and granddaughter who lives not far away. Unfortunately, the fireplace would not light. 4 of us tried several times to utilize the instructions and set the fire. The owner noted it usually took her husband several tries too, however after several hours of attempts we gave up and went without the fireplace over the week. We also had a water crisis at 2 am on Christmas morning where there was no water in the house. My husband and son drove for an hour and ended up driving all the way back to Wilkesboro to buy out all the water at a local Walgreens. There ended up being some water under the bed in the house, but that information wasn't conveyed to us until after the water issue was resolved around noon. Then we were excited to smoke our turkey on the grill, but the gas ran out while the turkey was just 20 minutes into being cooked. The water issue continued while we were there and the water pressure was turned off which made for less enjoyable showers. The last issue although minor was frustrating. We had a flight out in the early evening and I asked to leave the house at noon, and the owner pushed for 11 am. I later checked our contract and we legally had it until noon, but unfortunately I didn't have that quickly available when speaking to the owner. With all the issues that came up, I might have expected some concession, reimbursement for the water, something. But that didn't happen. So, our Christmas week wasn't exactly as we had hoped for, but we saw our family and that was the important part and enjoyed an interesting part of NC we had not yet seen.
In response to your review, I agree, you had a rare combination of unfortunate events and for that I am sorry. It was a freak occurrence that the water pipe leading to the pump under the house sprang a leak at 2 am on Christmas morning. We called a plumber as soon as you informed us of the problem. Fortunately, our neighbor was able to temporarily fix the problem for you until the plumber arrived and was able to permanently repair it. We know that you went out in morning to find water and most local stores were understandably closed on Christmas. As soon as you told us that you were looking for water, I told you that there was a case of bottled drinking water under the bed, but your husband had already left buy some. It was also unfortunate that the battery in the remote control on the new fireplace logs had died and the gas grill had run out of gas while you were cooking. All of these problems were unexpected and unpredictable. We’re glad that you were able to visit your family for Christmas and were able to see our beautiful NW corner of North Carolina.
The cabin is lovely and as described. We were looking for a place close to Boone, and while this is a little further out than we thought was ideal, it ended up being perfect and a quick and easy minute drive (20-25 mins) that will only improve as they are upgrading the roads. We had everything we needed and our hosts were super! Communication was great and they went the extra mile to update us close to our stay on current road conditions! Wonderful! We recommend this cabin and is a great choice for visiting the High Country!
We are so glad you enjoyed our home and we hope to have you again. Once the road construction is finished it will be super easy to get to Boone.
So cozy and clean!
We really enjoyed staying in this cozy and impeccably clean cabin. We spent most of our time skiing, but this was a great place to rest and relax. We also enjoyed the town of West Jefferson on our last morning- so quaint and inviting. Jean was so easy to work with. We would definitely stay again!
After a day of skiing, I'm sure you enjoyed the new gas logs in the fireplace. I'm glad you had a chance to visit the quaint little town of West Jefferson.
Your place is beautiful, well located to almost everything and equipped with everything we could possibly need! We will definitely keep you in mind on our next visit!
Thank you for your kind words. Many guests have enjoyed relaxing in our cozy country home. We love staying there too. We look forward to seeing you again.
Beautiful little getaway
We have loved our stay at your house here in the Boone area. We came to take our 2 sons to Tweetsie RR for a weekend getaway. Beautiful home, very clean and well kept. If I had a mtn home this would be exactly what I would want. Very quiet area and the town of West Jefferson is very nice. We look forward to coming back again! I highly recommend your home to anyone. Also, thank you Jean for your hospitality and allowing us to rent your place for the weekend.
We are so glad that you had fun. Many of our guests also go to Tweetsie Railroad. The kids love it. We hope to see you again.
Made in the shade
We were looking for a cool spot in the mountains and this was a great location. The house was well equipped and the master bed was comfortable. We visited the surrounding area and took a mountain hike. It was a very pleasant weekend.
