The Garaj Mahal on the Salt Pond ~ your home away from home!

Bedrooms 1
Space 800 sq ft
Property type apartment

About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath with jetted tub and shower, (Sleeps 2)

This lovely 800-square foot apartment is on the granite shores of the Salt Pond, a four-mile long saltwater cove opening on Blue Hill Bay and home to bald eagles, seals, osprey, kingfishers, and a myriad of aquatic birds. It's a great place for kayaking or just sitting on the shore with a good book. The apartment, on a very quiet five acres with panoramic water views, is a cozy place to hang out. There are some nice walks and bike rides nearby, or drive four miles to the village where you'll find several great restaurants, galleries, quality shops, an bookstores, a wonderful library and a supermarket.

For a terrific view of the coast, from the mountains of Acadia to the islands of Penobscot Bay, take one of the trails up Blue Hill Mountain, just a few minutes from the village. Besides the world famous Wooden Boat School in neighboring Brooklin and The Haystack Mountain School on Deer Isle there are almost endless opportunities for education and activity on the Blue Hill Peninsula. You might want to participate in an oil or pastel class with award-winning artist Carolyn Caldwell - (check her website under her name plus dot com.) And if chamber music is to your liking, you won't want to miss one of the weekly chamber music concerts at Kneisel Hall where for over 100 years they have educated young classical music students as well as offering concerts by renowned performers, including members of the Julliard String Quartet.

Acadia National Park is just beautiful beyond description and only a short drive away. Hike dozens of mountain trails, bike the well-maintained carriage roads, spend the day at Sand Beach, drive to the summit of Cadillac Mountain and watch the sun rise or set. Watch one of the 100-plus cruise ships come into Bar Harbor. The town is loaded with restaurants, shopping, nature cruises and other diversions.

For those of you drawn to the watery side of the coast of Maine, Blue Hill sits in the middle of what some consider the finest sailing grounds in the world. The rugged coast, with innumerable islands, coves, bays and harbors, is a paradise for kayakers and those who want to spend a half day or several days aboard an old schooner seeing Maine as Verrazano and Champlain did.

Know that your hosts want you to have an excellent vacation, and Maine is full of people and places to ensure that you do.

About Maureen & Steve

We purchased our land in 1997 and pitched our tent on the shore when we came to Blue Hill weekends until we started building in 2001. We are consummate travelers so we know what you expect in your 'home away from home.' And, we also love living where we do. We find the ocean relaxing and beautiful - watching the bald eagles fly by, listening for the osprey, kingfishers, and terns, observing seals on the rocks and having them play peek-a-boo with you as you kayak the Salt Pond - so much to enjoy - well, come see for yourself. It is a magical place!

Maureen & Steve purchased this apartment in 1997

Why Maureen & Steve chose Blue Hill

There is so much beauty all around . . . there is nothing so soothing as sitting on the shore and watching birds, seals, bald eagles and osprey catch a meal, knowing you don't have to work that hard - you just have to choose which one of the great local restaurants where you will enjoy your next meal.

What makes this apartment unique

Kayaks are available for your use here on the Salt Pond - paddle in the early morning and find yourself in the midst of seals sunning themselves or bald eagles hunting for breakfast for their young chicks.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Steve & Maureen - Our stay in your beautiful, super clean apartment was wonderful. We thank you for sharing it with us. We thank you for giving us the perfect amount of privacy. We feel fortunate to have spent a week in such a place. Thanks, too, for the advice on places to see and go. The wine is our treat to you from California.

Perfect Vacation Spot

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at the Garaj Mahal and cannot wait to return! The house, the location, and all of the nearby attractions could not have been more perfect.

Our first day we arrived in Blue Hill and took in the town! We bought wine at the Blue Hill wine store, visited the co-op and the bookstore and just got to know our surroundings. We shopped at Tradewinds for our supplies for the week before heading to the property. When we arrived, we were greeted by Maureen and the dogs! She showed us everything in the house, recommended some restaurants and attractions, and showed us maps and how to get around. The property is beautifully situated within no more than an hour's drive north to Acadia and south to Deer Isle. We fell in love with Deer Isle and went there two times, once for a lobster boat tour. We also spent a day in Castine and enjoyed walking around that town too!

But the parts of the vacation that we enjoyed the most were at the Garaj Mahal. The property is not far off of a main road, but you feel like you are worlds away (from whatever you wish to escape). The property is beautiful and teeming with life. We saw wild turkeys, a porcupine, and lots of birds. It is so quiet! We have never slept better! Almost every morning, we would kayak to Eagle Island (on Maureen's recommendation) and just sat in the kayaks and watched the eagles! One time we saw them feeding their eaglets, which was very special.

Maureen and Steve were wonderful hosts and offered suggestions whenever we asked. They were attentive yet respectful of our privacy and seemed to genuinely care about our time there.

We can't wait to return to this very special place! Thank you, Maureen and Steve, for a wonderful property and a wonderful time!

A little piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

Staying at the Garaj Mahal was like having our own little piece of paradise. The apartment above the garage is perfect for a getaway. Maureen and Steve have provided everything you'd need in a very comfortable apartment and were warm, responsive and generous hosts. What we loved the most is not sharing a wall with anyone and being at the end of the road where there was nothing but peace and quiet. We went out in their kayaks on Salt Pond twice and saw mergansers, kingfishers and heard but did not see a loon. Also the sunsets from the bedroom window were amazing. Thanks for everything!

Blue Hill Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Very beautiful and relaxing upstairs unit. Lovely setting and large apt with all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. The Maine countryside was lovely, lush and green for our early Sept. visit. We stayed three days and explored the peninsula, drove to Stonington and traveled about an hour away to Acadia. The Tradewinds grocery store, only four miles away, had a wide selection of organic as well as traditional items. The Shain's of Maine ice cream was fabulous. A convenient gas station at the Tradewinds made for a one-stop fillup for everything. Thanks, Maureen and Steve for a special break.

There was nothing lacking, NOTHING.

  • 5 of 5

Pictures on a website can go two directions, more credit than something deserves,or nowhere near enough credit. In this case the pictures fall far short! This property is exquisite . This is a standalone apt across the driveway from the main home. Steve and Maureen were the perfect hosts, waiting for us upon check-in to provide greetings and orientation, and then invisible for the duration of the visit unless we needed them. Maureen in particular is very knowledgeable of the area and will gladly help you plan itineraries, day trips and such. Speaking of the area one word of advice , it is remote. Blue Hill is a small town surrounded by several smaller towns and dining options are few. This is not a resort nightlife area . Bar Harbor is about an hour away and can provide that but not around the property. Was perfect for us and might be for you but don't come here looking for nightlife and dining. It is not a desolate wilderness but it is a few 2000 person towns strung down very beautiful highways in even prettier country. the property is beautiful! on the water and provides ample outdoor activity opportunities . It would be a great place to bring bicycles to , my wife and I were able to walk a different trail every night and kayaks and canoe are provided on the property. this was an awesome vacation with wonderful hosts! If the Northwoods seaside is your thing don't miss this property!

We had a great stay at the Garaj Mahal

  • 5 of 5

Steve and Maureen are fantastic hosts and have created a wonderful retreat at the Garaj Mahal.

No detail was lost in their planning, decorating and sharing of this property. The Blue Hill area is amazingly quaint and the setting of this property is truly extraordinary. We loved that we were close to Acadia (approx 45 min drive) but had so many other areas to explore.
