I was there 12/06 and 04/09; We are planning on a 2010 trip and if the kids bail out, we are going back in a heartbeat! I found the owners to be VERY responsive, the house to be pristine and the surrounds and beaches rate 50 on a scale of 1 to 10. The owners recent additions of the wood chairs on the deck are the perfect touch to relax.
The kitchen is perfectly equipped as well. If you need entertainment of the resort type, you should consider another Island; but if you need peace and quiet with astounding beauty, this place is for you. If you scan the travel forums, you'll find but one complaint on the property; the remaining dozen or so of us will swear by it and all are dedicated return visitors. If you are considering a honeymoon there - Do It! The journal in the house recounts several honeymoons there where the local folks helped in the celebration, yet afforded the honeymooners the complete privacy that's native to the location.
Ah! The house decoration... I have stayed in several 4 star hotels that did not have the quality of linens afforded to guests at Tropical Heights. For the volume of people traveling through the house, that is impressive!
We were enamored with Tropical Heights enough, that another guest who had complaints about the location, commented that the fins were tore up - yes, it was true - that's alot of blue water, and they had the miles on them - we replaced them... So, another amenity is brand new fins...
To the owners: Thank you for opening the house to us - It IS paradise!! Oh! Get to know the caretaker "IJ" - He is great!
Tropical Heights was wonderful. In fact, I wish I was there now and hope to go back. I cannot say enough about the view from the home. But what sets it apart is the privacy. You feel like you're on the island by yourself. You can see one house up the hill from Tropical Heights, but with all the beautiful vegetation around the home they can't see you. We never once saw anyone on the beach in front of the house. The water was rough when we were there, so swimming wasn't great at that beach, but there were plenty of other places to visit. But with all the windows, it was amazing to wake up to the beautiful sunrises. The pictures on the website are a little dated as the furniture and TV have been upgraded. Oh, and IJ was great. He was helpful and rented us a 4wheel drive which I recommend. If you want relaxation, privacy, and empty beaches Eleuthera is the place to go and I don't think you can beat Tropical Heights as a place to stay.
My wife and I are not resort kind of people , we cannot say enough about this house between the owners and IJ the caretaker. I really believe you need to have a car. We brought some food basics with us since we enjoy fresh fish and cooking for ourselves. You can find what you need at the stores but be prepared for high prices. The house is clean and simple, the Atlantic side was like being on the Jersey Shore with wave action. Bring fishing gear if thats your thing . Lobster, Octopus and all types of fish are present. I bought some fish from the local but scored big in Spanish Wells at the Gov.Dock there is a seafood monger I purchased 12 nice lobster tails frozen and cryovaced at 4 bucks a tail. They were best lobster I have ever eaten sweet and fresh. Bring a small cooler they have one in the house with icepacks. Go north to shop , see the roadside farmer they make all types of bread on mondays and he picks what veggies you need on the spot. The North Eleuthera Shopping center has great deals on chicken and meat and better pricing than most. Eating out go to Daddy Joes great bar Sunday nights live music. 1648 is another good stop really nice food is top notch. We spent 12 days on the island and at Tropical Heights never saw one person, it was like having your own private island. We will go back.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Tropical Heights and we found it to be as advertised. It was extremely clean and well appointed when we arrived. It sits up high with a spectacular view of the ocean--a view I felt rivaled any other location on the island. While there are plenty of beaches and decent restaurants, I was somewhat disappointed in what the island offered in points-of-interest. We went on a couple excursions North with the rental car but found nothing of great interest--to me at least.
Speaking of rental cars--we were surprised to learn rental cars are VERY expensive here. $50/day is typical for a well-worn car and payment is expected in advance and in CASH. Plan accordingly. We got ours from IJ but we understand it's the same elsewhere.
Tropical Heights offers double sliding doors & screens which allow a very nice view and sound of the ocean below. When it is extremely windy (20+ MPH), as it was a few nights we were there, the windows & screens can rattle (even howl) a great deal. Prior renters have placed objects into the window frames to reduce that noise and we added some to the tops of the sliding screens as well. There is a covered front porch facing the ocean and a wooden and concrete side deck area. You can escape some of the winds there if you choose as it is more sheltered than the rest.
Again. We loved Tropical Heights and felt it was everything we had hoped for. There are a few other observations which I will share for those that follow behind us. If these sound negative, they are very minor and meant to inform others as well as the owner:
The DVD player does not work as the drawer will not open/close. There are a lot of DVD/VHS movies there, however.
No telescope was to be found. It's use would have only been fun in viewing the cruise ships that pass by from time to time.
The Kayak is challenging to launch and navigate when windy as the ocean can get pretty choppy. I suggest using it on calm days only. Also best at high tide to avoid coral formations.
Turn off ice maker before going to bed or you will be startled when cubes empty at some ungodly hour of night
TH has Satellite TV but the 1st 100 channels are unavailable thru out the island --unfortunately those channels have most common network programming NBC/ABC/CBS but there are hundreds of other channels.
The owners and the entire island promote water conservation here. Flushing only for solids is requested.
Doug and Valinda, thanks again for sharing your fabulous bit of paradise with us. It was perfect. We really appreciated that the house was so well-equipped. We wanted for nothing! It is difficult to describe the stunning beauty and tranquility of Eleuthera and especially the Tropical Heights location. Some days it was tough to tear ourselves away from the view and the beach to explore other parts of the island. I found the snorkeling right out in front of the beach was the best on the island. It is also nice to visit a place where the people, young and old, are always ready with a smile and a 'hello'.
The Eleuthera motto is 'It is not for everyone'...and it is true. If you want fancy hotels, night clubs, all paved roads, box stores and the like, save yourself the disappointment and try another place. But if you enjoy total relaxation, breathtaking beauty, friendly people and an excellent house for your stay, Tropical Heights will not disappoint!
And thanks IJ for your help!

This was our second time to the island so we knew what we did want and what we didn't want in a beach house. Tropical heights did not disappoint! We were looking for a small place for 2, secluded and private without neighbors close by. If you look to the right, there is absolutely no houses as far as you can see and i doubt there would ever be any people walking along the beach from that direction. If you look to the left there are 2 houses, there are also a couple of houses behind them which I would imagine the only others that would possibly even go to this beach. That being said those houses are so far away it doesn't even matter. The house and beach area are completely private. We did not see another soul around the entire week. The beach is not a great swimming beach because of the rocks and depending on the weather the waves but on a calm day there is some really great snorkeling. We saw many fish and a sea turtle and it was the best snorkel all week and with the entire beach to ourselves all we needed to wear were our fins and masks. The house is well maintained and has everything you will need. IJ is awesome and very helpful and he is only a phone call away. I dealt with Doug (the owner) and he is great to deal with. Always quick to reply, helpful, and answers as many questions as you will have and is very patient. The drive to the house is about 5 minutes from the main highway and another few minutes to Governors Harbor which has gas, super market, and liquor store which is all you should need. The house is pretty central on the island and many great beaches are very close by. We explored from Lighthouse beach to harbor island. Overall a great experience at Tropical Heights and would highly recommend it!
