The cottage is surrounded by 50 year-old pine trees, perennials, and native trees .it is situated on our four-acre property with your own private 160 feet of lake front with canoe and 2 kayaks. Very private, quiet, serene, and just steps to lake front. Relax in the outdoor hot tub overlooking the lake. The cottage has an open kitchen, dining and sitting area with large pine beams, vaulted ceilings and a beautiful view of the lake or woods. The kitchen is fully equipped. The dining areas, both inside and out seat four to six people. The sitting area is very inviting, featuring a Vermont casting gas stove and a large, cozy window seat overlooking the lake and woods. The bathroom has a claw foot tub with shower, with all the amenities: hair dryer, ironing board, washer and dryer, plenty of bath and lake towels.
The bedroom on the main level has a full-size antique bed and sliding glass doors that lead out to the covered screened in porch overlooking the lake. The lake cottage also has a private patio with a hot tub, gas BBQ, and fire pit as well as your own private garden. Steps down from the cottage is a 60-foot cedar deck, a 12-foot by 12-foot pergola, and floating dock. There are lounge chairs, a table and chairs, a porch swing, and a hammock -- all private and overlooking the lake. Take a dip in the spring-fed lake which is clean and refreshing. Enjoy a paddle in the canoe or 2 kayaks. You may see painted turtles basking in the sun on fallen logs. Canadian geese and swans may swim by. If you wake up early, don't be surprised if you see wild turkeys, deer, fox, or red tailed hawks. They're all very common in our area.
The charming villages of Rhinebeck, Tivoli and Red Hook offer many choices for restaurants and nightly entertainment -- and are only about 15 minutes from our cottage. The Fisher Center on the grounds of Bard College is also only a 15 minute drive. There are historical estates such as Montgomery Place, Clermont and Olana. There is also Innisfree Garden in nearby Millbrook. Cities such as Great Barrington, Woodstock, Millerton, Millbrook and Hudson are a bit further but worth the drive.
Our family moved to the New York Hudson Valley area in 2000 from the west coast. Deanna has been a flight attendant for 26 years and enjoys both flying and being home . Our daughter Olivia is in high schooland has enjoyed the country life and Red Hook's wonderful school system. Bruce worked in hotel management on the west coast for 20 years and decided a different lifestyle was needed. We had only planned on staying here for a couple of years but fell in love with the area and community and decided to stay. We built a vacation rental on our lake property to give Bruce a project and combining Bruce's knowledge of the hotel business and Deanna's bed and breakfast background from Napa Valley , California, the lake cottage has evolved into a wonderful full time business. We are grateful to our many repeat guests and our new guests for making it such a success.
Bruce or Deanna Gardom purchased this cottage in 2000
The location of our lake cottage is ideal for a getaway from the stress and fast pace of the city. The privacy and tranquility of the lake and cottage is so inviting and peaceful. We see wild life almost daily, such as deer, turkey or geese ,fox, rabbits , hawks, heron, swans and an occasional eagle. The wild life is abundant in the area.
FROM OUR GUEST BOOK...We needed a retreat, a place to unwind and relax. We found that, and more, at this peaceful cottage. We read, wrote, talked and watched the wildlife. Squirrels, chipmunks, birds, and deer fritted and scampered through the clearing. Alpha Squirrel was fun to watch-perched high on the birdfeeder, chattering gutteral challenges to those who would steal "his" hoard. The weather was nice. Some rain occassionally splattered the leaves, but at some point each day the sun sent shimmering grins across the lake. We hope all who stay here enjoy the traquility and fresh air as much as we did. This is trily a lovely cottage and we hope to find our way again.Thank you, Bruce and Deanna, for your hospitality and for sharing your cottage ( and the peace it brought)...
I can only echo what all of the other reviews have said. This is a wonderful cottage away from it all. It is kept in meticulous condition and you want for nothing. I debated writing a review as to keep this place a secret but decided it was o.k to share it! We spent time in there over Christmas so when we entered the house to the warm fireplace going, and the adorable Christmas tree we knew it was going to be magical. And it was. Can't wait to visit again. Thanks Bruce and Deanna!
This was our second visit to the Painted Turtle and once again we enjoyed every minute. This lovely little cottage is surrounded by nature. Bruce and Deanna add welcoming touches that make you feel right at home. It is the place to be for rest and relaxation. We are so blessed to have found this little "peace" of heaven!
We returned for our 7th year to the house. Bruce and Deanna have set up a little slice of heaven. Dinner on the screened in porch, lounging on the dock, taking in the nature, swimming in the lake, playing cards on the deck at sunset, and taking canoe rides made up our days. House is comfortable, clean and has all amenities.
Thank you for another incredibly relaxing week.
I can only resonate what others have set. We had a great time fishing, Reading books and playing with our five-year-old son. We will come back for more.
The turtle cottage has everyone you would want. A beautiful setting looking out at the lake, quaint and thoughtfully equipped with modern conveniences.
We went out in the canoe, used the fire pit, and really enjoyed the outdoor fireplace, as it was a little chilly. The enamel gas stove is not only beautiful, but kept the cottage comfortable. Everything you need is provided, from outdoor activity equipment to indoor family games, tv, books and more. Helpful information about the area attractions were also left for us, and were really helpful. Even though we did not have the best weather while we were there, we had the best time. You won't be disappointed.
We had such a wonderful time at the Painted Turtle Lake Cottage. Bruce and Deanna have really thought of everything. The cottage was exactly as described and even more adorable than in the photos. The house was ready for guests and the fresh eggs were delicious! We were just so happy as we stepped through the door. The owners were there to help us out and answer questions. They were also very easy to get in touch with via the VRBO app.
The little town nearby and the farmer's market were amazing. We even got to feed some goats while we picked up the most delicious fresh ingredients. We spent the weekend playing board games by the 'fire', cooking home cooked meals in the adorable yet well-fitted kitchen, and laughing over vino. We cannot wait to go back in the warmer months to enjoy everything the property has to offer - especially those kayaks!!
We would absolutely recommend this property but almost don't want to so we can keep it all to ourselves!
