About the property

2Bdrm, 2Bath Lakefront Vacation Rental Huddleston, Virginia USA

Please send an inquiry before a reservation request.

This two-bedroom, two-bath cottage offers the ambiance of gentler times with all the comfort and luxury of the present! Sweet By and By is a quaint and peaceful home located on a very quiet street directly across from the entrance to the State Park. The setting is beautiful in the spring and summer, and even lovelier in the long, warm Virginia fall. Yet, the wooded lot, fireplace, and hot tub make Sweet By n’ By very private and cozy, and also the perfect place for a long winter weekend getaway. This home is truly wonderful during anytime of the year and the ideal place for one or two couples, or a small family.

The one-level cottage style home is located on the Craddock Creek channel of beautiful Smith Mountain Lake. The cove offers deep, wide water that is great for swimming, boating, or cruising around in its five-person paddle boat or canoe. The home has central air, a laundry room, and a kitchen that is fully equipped for all of your cooking needs. Appliances include a full-size refrigerator, range, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven, toaster, waffle maker, crock pot, and blender. The kitchen is also stocked with dishes, glasses, flatware, pots, pans, and cooking utensils. The hot tub and gas grill are located under the carport, so they remain functional even in the event of inclement weather.

In the living area, a 42” HDTV is connected to satellite TV with an expansive HD programming package, a DVD player, as well as a Netflix subscription. High speed wireless internet and a wireless Printer/Scanner/Copier office machine afford the opportunity to extend a weekend stay and work remotely if needed. A gas fireplace is available (except during the summer) to take the chill out of the morning air and provide a cozy, romantic setting in the evenings. Additional 32" and 24” HDTVs and DVD players are available in the bedrooms, as well as Netflix.

Looking out to the lake is a sunroom furnished with a rocking chair and lounge chairs, which are ideal for enjoying morning coffee or quiet evenings. It is a perfect way to appreciate those great lake views or to relax with a good book. The room opens to a lighted walkway. Off the top of the walkway is a fire pit equipped with a cooking grate and tools to enjoy campfire cooking. The walkway leads to a porch swing situated on a landing by the lake. The landing area can be warmed by a second fire pit. At the end of the walkway is a large dock with a sun deck. The dock’s amenities include: electrical outlets, lighting, a covered boat slip, a hoist that is designed to accommodate either one V-hull boat or up to two jet skis, and a floating dock that is outfitted for mooring boats. It is a great spot for swimming, fishing, waterskiing or just kicking back and enjoying the sun! After enjoying a day on water, spend a leisurely evening around the warmth of the fire pit or pitching horseshoes, if you are looking for some friendly competition.

An RV port (w/ water and electric) is available near the entrance of the property. The property is also conveniently located near Mariners Landing Golf Course and would be ideal for a foursome interested in a golf weekend. The 5th hole at Mariners Landing, a par 3 over water, can be seen directly across the cove from the property.

About Marc

I absolutely fell in love with Smith Mountain Lake on my first visit in 2004. Now I feel extremely fortunate to be part of the lake community. By making my home available to others, I sincerely hope many more can enjoy the lake as much as my son and I do.

Marc purchased this house in 2012

Why Marc chose Huddleston

Sweet By and By is the quintessential lake cottage. It’s quaint, cozy, private, and everything you think of when imagining a place at the lake. It’s the ideal vacation place for a small family or romantic getaway for a couple.

What makes this house unique

Hot tub, gas logs fireplace, paddle boat, canoe, wireless internet, HDTV and HD programming, sun deck, sun room, deep water at the dock, horseshoes, and conveniently located near the state park.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hoping for snow we looked to take a mid-winter get-away. We ended up finding Marc's nice lake front home and 70 degree weather. It couldn’t have been better. Both Marc and the rental team were in touch making the rental process a positive and easy experience. We found the home clean and well-maintained. Everything needed was provided. Plenty of space especially for a two bedroom house. If you are looking for a modern, gee-whiz, total wow factor type of place, this is not for you. If you appreciate a well maintained, fully functional traditional home with fun factor and a caring owner, you’re at the Sweet By and By and smiling. Overall, it exceeded our expectations and were very pleased with our stay. See you on that beautiful shore!

Beautiful quaint house with all the amentities

  • 5 of 5

Great house right on the lake. Lots of steps to dock but worth it. Use of canoe and paddle boat add to charm of lake but beware of the big boats- was fairly busy on the weekend. Stocked kitchen- great. gas fireplace bonus on cool evenings. Overall- 5 star without a doubt

So-so

  • 3 of 5

Everything is relative when trying to review lodging and we knew this was not going to be a luxury stay, but I wouldn't call it "cheap" either for this time of year (late Sept).

In general, the house seemed to have been cleaned well when we arrived. However, the sofas are dingy and just seemed dirty--we didn't want to sit on them. Cushions on sun porch furniture are old and not very comfortable--they could use replacing. Stains on chair padding. Lighting inside the home is dim everywhere, especially bedrooms and bathrooms--makes it sort of depressing and unwelcoming.

The deck on the lake is a plus- nice to sit outside. Sun is on it in the mornings but it is in shade for afternoon and early evenings.

Hot tub was fine, good temp, seemed clean.

There is no "lawn" but rather gravel and weeds and moss.

We were eager to leave after our 2 night stay. We had beautiful weather, so that was not the problem!

Owner's Response: Julie, I'm sorry you weren't 100% satisfied with your choice, but in all fairness, it's not my duty to account for everyone's tastes and preferences. I didn't seek you out and misrepresent my property to you. You know your own tastes and standards, and you chose my property from hundreds that are available. As a general response to the comments you made, dozens of reviews have been submitted for the property, including many recent ones, and no other tenants took issue with the things you noted. The property listing includes the maximum number of pictures possible. The pictures provide a full presentation of the house, inside and out, as well as the dock and the grounds. In regards to the lack of a yard or grass, aside from pictures of the grounds in the listing, the description of the property clearly mentions the house sits on a heavily wooded lot. I also take issue with your comment about the lighting. The master bedroom has an overhead light, 3 lamps and 3 windows for natural light. The master bath has a window, 1 overhead light and 4 on the vanities. The vanity lights also have a dimmer control, which you may have overlooked, in addition to some of the other lighting controls. The second bedroom has a wall light, lamp and window. The living area has 2 wall lights and 2 lamps. The dining area has 2 wall lights. Further, there are 8 windows providing natural light to the kitchen, dining and living areas. In regards to your comments about the furniture, I have been to the house since your stay and I did not see any stains on the cushions for the sunroom furniture. If you were referring to the front porch, I will take a closer look at my next opportunity. As for the living room sofas, choosing furniture to fit the home’s rugged, rustic décor doesn’t make it dingy and unfit. Also, by making the home available to families with kids and pets, which you took advantage of by bringing your dogs, it only makes sense to stage it with darker furniture that is functional and durable, versus luxurious. Lastly, to your veiled comment about the pricing, the home’s tag line is -- Ambiance of gentler times with the luxury of the present. The value comes in the home's throwback charm while still offering many premium amenities not available in most other properties at the lake, including: being dog friendly, high speed internet service, a hot tub, bedroom TVs, HDTV service, NetFlix, a boat lift, a gas fireplace, fire pits, a party deck on the dock, and a horseshoe pit.

Not The First Time, Won't Be The Last!

  • 5 of 5

The only thing better than the property was the owners responsiveness! The location is fantastic, right off the water!

I can't speak highly enough of the beds inside this place. So many times you rent a great property and the beds are terrible, definitely not the case here. After long days on the lake each day we woke up rested and relaxed from those comfortable beds!

Plenty of games are provided to play, kitchen is solid. The hot tub is really nice and relaxing to take a dip in. There are so many amenities to this property it's hard to do it justice! I enjoyed the privacy of the trees so you weren't staring directly at your neighbors! We will definitely be back!

Thanks, Marc!

Wonderful family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved staying at this house. It was the perfect size for us with 2 kids and 2 dogs. The house is very clean and had everything we needed. The sun porch is just wonderful to enjoy the view with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. We loved the dock and party deck where we had dinner every night. The kids went fishing every day with great success. We had a fire in the fire pit every night and made smores and the kids enjoyed the hot tub as well. The house is located in a quite area and I enjoyed taking the dogs for walks every day. There is a wonderful winery nearby and grocery store pretty close by.

We rented a pontoon boat from a marina close by and it was a great way to explore the wonderful lake.

The only negative is that the stairs to the dock are steep but once you are on the dock and deck the views are wonderful.

I highly recommend this rental. The owner was fabulous and responded very quickly and was very informative.

We hope to return soon!

Lake Vacation

  • 4 of 5

We loved the house! It was just private enough. Great for our family! The dock was where we spent most of the days. We took an heavy duty cooler and left it down at the dock rather than hauling one up and down the stairs each day. The dock was great for fishing, swimming, or just hanging out. Having a canoe was also a perk. The kitchen is stocked perfectly. One side note: in the brochure that Lake Retreat gives the renters it has different check-in and check-out times than what is listed on the home away website.
