We had a wonderful time during our stay at the house. We were looking for a relaxing time and found exactly what we were looking for. The area is pretty secluded so if you're looking for privacy, you'll find it.
There was a family of deer that would come around the lake in the mornings. The screened in porch is a great feature and was a great spot to enjoy the views of the lake.
The owners were very accommodating regarding any questions we had. I would visit again....
This was our 3rd stay at Alice's cottage on the lake. The last time we were there our son was 3 and now 7. We all thoroughly enjoyed relaxing, floating and swimming in the lake. Having the dock there is essential - you can sit outside and catch some sun or go under the covered part for a break. Our weather in July was perfect. We also took the canoe out several times. The views in the morning from the deck are just beautiful - you can see the sun coming through the trees. Very relaxing. We also enjoyed going to the Marina one evening and enjoyed the food and local musicians. Alice remains very easy to work with -- thank you again, Alice!
We truly enjoyed the serenity of this cabin. As the sign in the kitchen window said--"RELAX"--we did just this! We enjoyed the screened in deck where we had breakfast every morning, and played cards each night. It was so peaceful. We had a great week at this cabin from start to finish! Alice, the owner, was wonderful to work with in making reservations and was really quick to reply. She answered all of our questions and gave us great tips (i.e. where to shop, etc). We loved the location of this cabin--in a small little nook in the back of a cove which kept the water so calm and this made for easier kayaking (brought our own kayak)! We could see and enjoy Smith Mountain from the dock. The guys tried fishing from the dock all week and basically just fed the fish! :) We saw lots of fish around the dock (the water is so clear), but none of them were biting! (Suggest you get your fishing license ahead of time--not many places to get one near the cabin). The deck was partially covered and this was a bonus for when it got really hot.
We took advantage of the 2 floors with one couple staying upstairs and the other downstairs-it was nice to have 2 full baths! Everything was so clean and in working order. We had everything we needed in the fully stocked kitchen and took advantage of the propane grill-which was a little tricky to get lit. We took turns washing dishes since there was no dishwasher--wasn't a problem for us at all, we made it work. We were grateful to have the full size washer and dryer available to us in the basement-these came in real handy.
During the middle of the week we checked out the lake using a pontoon boat we had rented from Mitchell's Marina before we got there (which is basically just around the corner from the cabin) and had a great time--they were very easy to work with, but I highly recommend you book with them early. We also went hiking at Smith Mountain Lake Park which was about a 15 min drive--a really nice park with some trails on the water's edge and it had a swimming beach (a small fee to park $4).
We were sorry we had to leave when our time was up---we definitely want to make it back again to this little piece of heaven!
First let me say thank you to Alice for being so responsive to our LAST MINUTE REQUEST. I sent her a request on 2 Sept for a stay that coming 6 Sept! She made it happen. My husband & I wanted somewhere we could relax but still enjoy a lake. This is such a place. This is NOT a place you should expect to have tons of things to do, this is a place to just sit on the dock; morning, noon & night. It was exactly what we needed to unwind. It was beautiful & calming. We did rent a pontoon for a few hours to check out the lake, which is quite a large lake. Our main objective was relaxation. Thank goodness because it takes 20 minutes to drive or boat to the nearest town. So be sure to have all you provisions with you upon arrival. There are two bedrooms upstairs & one downstairs. We stayed upstairs in the QN bed, which was comfortable. Downstairs there is a washer & dryer, another bathroom & a game table, which we didn't use. We did sit on the screened in porch, but only for a bit. The lake called us, it was so nice sitting under the canopy on the dock or under the sun. We even got into the water. This is a perfect place for a romantic getaway or two couples or a friends weekend. Kids would also enjoy the lake, but there's only so much time by the water that a kid can take. They will get bored, I have children. There's no park close by, but there is a game room downstairs. Which is great if you want the adults upstairs & the kids downstairs.
Some of my concerns are that at least two of the bar stools need replaced, they are dangerous. The coffee table upstairs needs work, it was wobbly. That's REALLY the only problems we had in the house. It is a lovely cabin. If you have any knee problems be aware that it is a sloping yard to the dock. I was able to handle but it did make my knees ache for awhile.
I would recommend this cabin on the lake.
The property was beautiful! We loved the cabin- especially the screened-in-porch. Great mountain view and we also enjoyed using the personal dock for our boat- it was very convenient and a lot less work then having to launch the boat everyday!
The owner was very friendly and easy to get in touch with. We would definitely stay here again!
