Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, this wonderful back-to-nature retreat features a recently built, three story vacation home perched on a bluff with spectacular views of a pristine undeveloped lake called Knight's Pond. In addition, there is a delightful and cozy one bedroom guest cottage tucked into the woods at the base of the bluff. The house is spacious, crafted with handsome pine interior floors and woodwork, and artfully decorated in the traditional Maine style. The lake (Knight's Pond) is surrounded by protected conservation land and a nature preserve owned by Coastal Mountains Land Trust, and provides excellent hiking swimming, camping and boating. Beyond this pristine watershed extends an island of natural beauty composed of tens of thousands of acres of conservation woodlands, including a coastal mountain range known as the Camden Hills. The retreat is also just 1 1/2 miles to the ocean and 1/3 mile to the nearest neighbor! There are incredible hiking trails all around the area, providing unique views and contact with the rugged Maine woods. There's a delightful sandy beach on the lake, and a beautiful point of land jutting out into Knight's Pond just a couple hundred yards from the retreat! Although the retreat is located in the 'backwoods', it is only a short drive to Camden, Belfast and other coastal towns with an array of coastal arts and crafts venues, incredible restaurants, musical productions, theatre, cozy harbors, bay cruises, local wineries, island beaches and much more. The house and cottage are designed for both social gatherings and solitude, including several living room areas and lounges for guests to find privacy and quiet. A third floor solarium provides extensive 360% views and is a favorite of guests. A canoe is available to guests, and we suggest bringing your own kayak, either for lake, river or bay. Biking on nearby roads or on the many islands in the bay is outstanding. Incredible wilderness hiking is right out the door on a variety of trails around the lake, along the Ducktrap River, on the hills and mountains, or even right down to Ducktrap Harbor on Penobscot Bay. For those who love ocean water, there are many different types of charter craft operating locally. Salt water and fresh water fishing opportunities abound. In addition, ferries to Islesboro, Monhegan and Vinal Haven are within driving distance. While the location is unique for its spectacular setting in one of the few remaining wilderness settings in downeast Maine, it is only a short drive away to many of Maine's special coastal attractions and communities. There is always something to do, hiking, fresh and salt swimming, canoeing, island hopping, exploring seafaring towns and villages, play at a world class golf course overlooking the ocean, sea kayaking in Penobscot Bay, mountain climbing, sitting out on the harbor, deep sea fishing in the bay, antiquing, browsing the art colonies of Blue Hills and Castine, Rockport and Camden, enjoying some of the fine cuisine in the numerous world class restaurants scattered around the area. There are few locations anywhere that can compare. Come and see for yourself, or browse the web for the Camden/Rockport/Belfast area attractions to find out about this beautiful and fascinating area of Maine!

About Dennis or Janet
Janet is a community organizer and works with an organization that serves elders in Boston. Dennis is an author of several books, and was a protestant minister in his earlier years. We have three grown children, and all have spent many happy and meaningful times in Northport, Maine over the past 32 years.
Dennis or Janet purchased this House in 1986
Why Dennis or Janet chose Northport
We bought this property because of the incredible beauty of the natural surroundings, and all of the wonderful recreational opportunities it allows. When we first purchased the property, it had an old house on it that had burned down many years ago upon it. Over the 32 years, we slowly cleared the land and, with some help with a friend who is a master carpenter, built the house and cottage. We really enjoy our time there, but we enjoy just as much when people share their stories and how much they appreciated their time at Knight's Pond!
What makes this House unique
There are few places anywhere that you can visit that provides so much outdoor recreational potential, natural beauty, privacy and comfortable and scenic lodging. Then there are the many small communities nearby which provide a plethora of cultural and recreational opportunities along the ocean and bays, including some of the finest restaurants in Maine within short driving distance. There is never a shortage of things to do or places to go.

A truly in the woods getaway!
This was a family trip after our son's wedding. The setting was spectacular- house and cottage nestled in the woods with views of the lake a half mile down the road. The kitchen was fully equipped. The only problem was that we had to supply our own linens and towels- a bit of a challenge when one is flying to their destination. The owner said they supply linens by request. I believe linens and towels should always be available to guests without having to be requested. The owner said they would from this day forward. Other than that a great back to nature experience.
Live in the treetops!
Excellent, lovely, peaceful.
Our only drawback was the (short notice) requirement to bring our own sheets and towels, which greatly adds to the (limited) luggage space in our car.
Quiet and peaceful in a great loxation.
Would have given 5 stars but place was not cleaned prior to our arrival so we had to clean ourselves.
Our deepest regrets that this happened. Our cleaning service has been exemplary during the past 10 years or more that we've used them. This is a first, and I've contacted them to let them know.
Nice retreat in a great location
We had a great time on our week stay. The house was nice & the location was even better. The guest cottage was very nice as well. We enjoyed taking the canoe out a few times. The beach area wasn't quite as close as we had thought but there were some nice hikes around the pond & to an overlook with a great view of the bay. The dirt road was a little rough & the road to the house a little steep but we quickly got used to it. Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway or a place close to Belfast or Camden.
We stayed there the last week of July 2014. It was our 6th annual family reunion. What a great place to relax. We enjoyed the pond, the canoe, the lobsters and the campfire lakeside. We are planning on going back soon!
Privacy! - spacious open home with windows galore
Terrific house for our extended family with plenty of living space for everyone. Our 3 dogs were in heaven. We loved the open feel of the house - everywhere windows. Everything was very clean, beds were comfortable, comfortable furniture throughout. Dennis was easy to reach, happy to answer as many questions as we had. He as immediately accessible when we had trouble logging into the WIFI network. We spent a part of each day at Knights Pond just down the road. It was an unusual combination of total privacy yet easy access to Belfast, Camden, etc. We particularly enjoyed Belfast. Thank you for such a great getaway!
