A large variety of lush flora envelopes and divides the property, including hibiscus, birds of paradise, orchids, ferns, palms, an awesome banyan tree and fruit trees offering the freshest mangoes, papayas, bananas, and avocados that are yours for the picking. Savor oceanic, pastoral or jungle views as tropical birds sing, geckos chatter, the island breezes caress the trees, and the resonance of the tide rhythmically whispering in the distance.

A few minutes past Kapaau is the colorful town of Hawi, known as North Kohala’s biggest little town. It is home to a weekly farmer’s market that we think is one of the best on the island. Be sure to sample local varieties of popular fruits, like apple bananas, strawberry papaya and in season, super sweet white pineapple! Hawi is also the bicycle turnaround for the annual Ironman World Championship held every October and has a great selection of unique shops and tasty restaurants. The world famous Bamboo Restaurant is consistently voted one of the best restaurants on the island with a great lineup of live music featuring award winning Hawaiian musicians. There are also wonderful alternative healing practices located here, with massage therapists , acupuncture specialists, naturopaths, herbalists, and a variety of yoga styles represented.
North Kohala is perfectly located to take advantage of many fun activities including scenic coastal rides on horseback or ATVs, the Kohala Zipline, Kayaking the Kohala Ditch and hiking trails galore. Head up the mountain road to Waimea and experience one of the best scenic drives in the US, with incredible views of Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and its observatories and a birds eye view of South Kohala with all its resorts and white sand beaches. The beaches in Kohala are the best on the island, including world famous Hapuna beach (Conde Nast rated it one of the top 10 beaches in the world), scenic Mauna Kea Beach, child friendly Spencer Beach Park and local favorite Beach 69.
Head down the coast towards South Kohala and you’ll discover many historical sites and parks along the coastline to enjoy. Lapakahi State Park is the site of an ancient fishing village and a great spot for snorkeling and whale watching. The harbor town of Kawaihae is home to a variety of tour companies offering scuba, snorkeling and whale watching tours. There’s also a nice selection of shops and galleries along with great dinning and music at the Blue Dolphin Restaurant or popular Café Pesto.

Over time, we have stayed in all of the homes. We have found them to be extremely well stocked in all categories (including numerous old school board games). The beds and furniture are comfortable. The outdoor showers are the perfect end to a day of sun, sand and beach. The remote area may seem daunting at first but you are literally 25 minutes from some world class beaches. Waking up to the sounds of waves, birds, cows and donkeys is just an out of world experience and really brought to home that we were in paradise. The property managers are extremely responsive and do their best to make your stay even better. I will definitely return.
The Bamboo suite is beautiful and quiet. It is connected to a larger rental on the property, but still felt very private. We hardly saw our neighbors. It rained nearly every night during our early March stay, but it was only a 30 minute drive to the sunny coast. It was nice to cool off a bit on the Lanai after a day at the beach.
Our only complaints are that the outdoor shower did not drain properly and the internet connection is hit or miss. Otherwise we had a lovely stay.
Also, make sure to stop at GJ's Huli Chicken for lunch! It was the best (and cheapest) meal that we had in Hawaii. They set up a bbq next door to the Hawi visitors center on Thursdays.
This place is absolutely beautiful and very quiet...it's lovely to fall asleep whith the sounds of the crickets and the waves (that you won't see...) Far from the tourists and the noise of the big city...it's also far from the beach if you're coming for swimming, snorkeling or surfing.
The Internet connection was poor and the drain of the beautiful outside shower was blocked...little disappointed...but overall we had a great time!
My wife & I stayed in the Bamboo Suite at the Akoni Pule Guesthouse to celebrate our 50th anniversary, for two beautiful and relaxing weeks and found it truly was a special piece of paradise. The weather in early October was beautiful with one day of rain in two weeks. Mornings were spent with coffee on the Lanai listening as the distant surf sang its song to the birds. If you want privacy, beauty and a taste of Hawaii this is it. It is far enough north that it private but closes enough to visit the rest of the islands shopping centers, parks and historic sites. The suite had many beautiful native wood furniture pieces, a kitchen large enough for the two of us to prepare meals, which we seldom did, (the food on the island is GREAT and close) and enough sporting equipment for a family. There was a large screen TV, DVD player & DVD’s in the breezeway. There is an all-natural delicious smoothie stand & taco restaurant a short walk away. There is a beach within a 10 minute drive and the outstanding Pollok Valley – Lookout, with its black sand beach 15 minutes away, so bring your camera. Spencer beach Park was our favorite. The towns Kapaau and Hawi were beautiful, quiet and had an assortment of restaurants and native arts & crafts. Be sure to stop at the Nanbu Courtyard in Kapa’au for Carols souvenirs (best prices). The suite is kept in great shape thanks to the owner’s brother who meticulously oversees and maintains it. We will definitely be back.
Mahalo to the owner & his family for a great stay
I wanted to title my review "Stay Away!", as, selfishly, I'd really like this place to be available for our next visit to the Big Island without anyone else taking a booking over our preferred weeks! But, that would not be fair... We had a wonderful stay, and cannot wait to return.
I rented the 2BR, 1bath Bungalow near Bamboo Suite for two months. Nestled in green growth, it grew on me as the ocean roared beyond cows in the nearby pasture. My courtyard meals were enhanced by local bananas, mangoes, Chinese cherries, liliquoi, lemons, and oranges. Neighbors were friendly with much happening 3-6 miles toward Hawi Town. I also enjoyed solitude when I wished. Keokae Beach Park, historic sights, Saturday market under the banyan, descent to Pololu's black sand and other hikes made it an unforgettable time in the tropics. Birds announced dawn and dusk as I kicked back and relaxed in fresh air. Snorkels, lawn chairs, and boogie boards added fun. It is the perfect place for a couple who want to get away and paint, write, read, or simply breathe!
The Big Island's North Kohala district is the discriminating travelers' best-kept secret. Experience 'Old Hawaii' in the charming historic towns of Hawi and Kapaau, with artists' shops, galleries, and delightful cafes. Historic sites - the famous statue of King Kamehameha, state parks, tropical gardens, Pololu Valley - with its majestic views, black sand beach, and scenic hiking trails. Or kick back, and enjoy some of the island's best beaches. Whale watching is seasonal (December through April), but the sea turtle sightings occur year-round.
