Old, historical castle Torre delle Rose, from the 12nd century. In the centre of Gaeta, excellent location: right in the centre but still quiet, 300 m from the sea, 1.5 km from the beach, in a pedestrian area. Private: garden with flowers and trees. Terrace. Stepped path (35 steps) to the house. Public parking 300 m on the road extra. Restaurant, bar 200 m, sandy beach Marina di Serapo 2 km. Please note: car not advisable. The apartment is located in a zone with limited traffic. Historic residential home, a listed building.
Torre delle Rose is a fascinating historic property set in the heart of medieval Gaeta. The apartment covers the top two floors and extensive roof terrace of a traditional tower house. The area is surprisingly quiet and the views from the roof terrace are wide reaching and interesting. Not only can you see the sea and dramatic coastline but you can look over many roof terraces, church towers and historic buildings. The apartment was very clean, the bed was comfortable and we had that we needed for a short break. We enjoyed dining on the roof. The apartment has real character, antique furniture, beautiful tiles in the floor and the walls and even a Roman column on the stairs! The key holder was there to greet us when we arrived and showed us where to park the car, an interesting and slightly nail biting journey all through the narrow medieval streets with hairpin bends. A large car might be a disadvantage. Gaeta has a wide range of local shops and restaurants within walking distance and over 100 churches. The walk through the park to the hills above is recommended. Historic Gaeta is not a obvious tourist destination and that is part of the charm of staying in the area. Close by is an extensive beach but more interesting, smaller beaches can be found along the coastline towards Sperlonga. The Villa of Tiberious at Sperlonga is worth a visit as is the island of Ponza reached by ferry from Formia just along the coast from Gaeta. Two things to note- the windows of the house resembles old bottle glass and you have to open the windows to look out which is not a problem in hot weather and the outlook over other properties is interesting - although there is plenty of storage at the property it is full of linen and bedding and there was little space to store clothes. There are several steps up to the apartment and inside and it would not be suitable for anyone with walking difficulties. It is not easy to find the house and I would have appreciated a street map instead of coordinates.
