I am very fortunate to travel to amazing places for my work in the travel business. This was one of my favorite places on Earth. I had amazing sleep, it's nearly silent (with no dogs and roosters that tormented me in neighboring towns). I booked very quickly and did not fully process that Carlos is a terrific chef and that he could prepare lovely dinners on site!
My husband and I stayed at Mar al Cielo for nine days and each one was perfect. Jodi and Carlos (and Raul!) are super nice/helpful and their property is gorgeous, peaceful, clean and private. We spent most days hanging out in (under?) the clifftop palapa, reading, playing cards and eating chips and guac. When we did manage to pull ourselves away from whale watching and lounging, we enjoyed a couple of mornings in Sayulita (stay away from the main beach and head north), the Tianguis Market in La Peñita (like a local flea market, not a ton in terms of unique arts & crafts, but definitely worth the morning trip) and an evening in Lo de Marcos (great tacos at the place Jodi and Carlos recommend for Friday and Saturday nights). Carlos cooked for us two nights and his food was delicious.
Some tips, in no particular order:
// Stay at least a week. We could have easily stayed another five days (on top of our nine).
// We liked the flexibility renting a car allowed us. We ended up paying around US $275 for our whole stay, which was definitely worth it.
// Carlos can get fresh oysters, shrimp and fish. He can also do Mexican food (which is not really featured on the menu). Definitely ask for off-menu preparations. And if you're an adventurous eater, tell him!
// Bring hiking shoes – nothing heavy duty, even Keen sandals will do, but you’ll want them for hiking around the property and for walking into town. Also bring water shoes for a better time in the surf.
// Get a bunch of empanadas at La Empanaderia Sayulita. They kept well in the fridge and made for an easy and yummy toaster oven breakfast.
// You’ll definitely want long pants and long sleeve shirts at night (in December for sure, not sure about the other months). Would NOT recommend jeans – loose cotton pants would be best. I was glad to have a cotton long sleeve t-shirt with me, but wished I had some cotton pajama bottoms and a light flannel shirt.
// Bring a reusable water bottle for each person to avoid plastic bottles!
// There is WiFi, but it’s very slow. Recommend downloading movies, books and music at home before you arrive.
// Don’t hesitate to ask Jodi for recommendations for paddle boarding, boat trips, bird watching, restaurants, etc. She’s really helpful and it’s nice to get info from a local.
This is the perfect place for getting away from it all. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
My husband and I chose Mar al Cielo for our 15 year wedding anniversary. We were looking for something away from the hustle and bustle and secluded. This property went over and beyond our expectations! When you first arrive you are taken back by the beauty of the views and sounds of the crashing waves below. We had made plans to go into town the first day to the market but couldn't pry ourselves away from the property! The house is wonderful. It was very clean and relaxing. Bugs were not a big issue like we were expecting. You have views from the bed pretty much in every direction. We slept every night with the windows open, feeling the breeze and listening to the ocean. We woke to the sunrise and showered watching the birds fly and sing about. We LOVED the outdoor shower and bath and used it regularly and never ran out of hot water. The kitchen had everything we needed when we decided to cook. The palapa was wonderful, I will never forget those views! One night while eating dinner a coatimundi visited the pond for water! We had Carlos make us dinner multiple times and we were never let down, it was wonderful! Raul's wife also made us dinner one night and it was amazing too. Jodi was top notch in every way. She was always there when we had questions and she went above and beyond to make sure we were happy. We called her asking for a ride to some nearby towns (we didn't rent a car) and she got us a personal tour for the day with a stop for lunch! She really made it feel like an all inclusive vacation! We went on the bird tour with Luis and were so happy we did! We highly reccommend it. The private beach is, well, very private! We were able to do some nude sunbathing and swimming without worry. The trail to the private beach on the front of the property can be a little strenuous and steep but it's manageable. You can also go to the beach from the driveway and it's an easier walk. I do recommend you bring some type of water shoes, there are rocks on the beach and in the water. The house and the palapa have wifi, added bonus! If you want to relax, get away from it all, and connect with nature you'll absolutely love this place!
Loved our stay there - the other reviews say it all - beautiful property, beautiful private casita with outdoor kitchen and shower. We splurged and had Carlos cook for us one night and it was great. He totally accommodated our vegetarian diet and cooked some delicious pasta primavera with basil right out of their garden. We enjoyed our walks around the property and down to the beach. Our only complaint is that we didn't stay longer - we had already booked another place for the second half of the trip. We rented a car, which provides flexibility to visit other towns and see the area but beware that the car rental place will require you to pay another $40/day for "insurance" no matter if you have a credit card and other car insurance to cover your rental. The price you see on the car rental websites is not even close to the price you will end up paying. If you don't need a car and just plan to relax at Jodi and Carlos' place, watching the birds, playing in the beach, visiting Lo Marco, I would definitely skip the car rental and get their shuttle. Thank you Jodi and Carlos for a wonderful relaxing few days!!
I felt like I was in Heaven our whole stay. I walked down to the palapa and it smelled like God had sprayed cologne on the path for me. As we walked up the path a flower fell at my feet.. Butterflies were everywhere. You could hear and see many birds. What a treat! We were the only ones there. It's an 11 acre retreat with only Jodi, Carlos & Raoul. And they only showed up when you needed them. Carlos was an excellent chef for dinner and breakfast. Raoul was so thoughtful and his attention to details was extraordinary! Jodi, what a great host! She made us feel welcome the moment we arrived. I wouldn't change a thing except have Carlos cook more often! There are many hiking trails to experience and many beaches to explore I will not forget the day the whales showed an appearance. They were so close. No binoculars needed for some sightings. I loved the isolation of this place. Some may not like that, but I loved it. One thing to be aware of though, it is a good walk up hill to the villa from the palapa. We loved the exercise, so it was not an issue for us, but someone who has any physical disabilities may have some trouble experiencing what we did. Don't worry about driving the road in and out. We had no troubles getting there at night, but the road is a little rough. Take your time and trust the instructions that Jodi has given and you won't have any troubles. We can't wait until our next visit.
This is our second visit, and we have already booked for next year! There is no place more tranquil and beautiful than Mar al Cielo - Everything is perfect - the setting, the outside living, the sounds of waves and birds, and sunsets that will take your breath away! Jodi and Carlos are wonderful hosts, they are thoughtful, attentive and kind. We might try for a 4 wheel car next time as driving the road up to Paradise was a bit of challenge, and we broke the "no offloading" rule of the rental car place every time! But it's hard to care about too much when you are staying in Paradise! Thank you Jodi and Carlos for everything you do to make your guests feel so welcomed and at home on your beautiful land.
