Nowadays, true getaways are hard to come by. Most vacations I had been on before with families and friends were always fun, but always a commercial experience. Mar Al Cielo was not one of those experiences. It's original, genuine, and breathtaking. Jodi and Carlos and the team were unbelievably accommodating, and really appreciated just how blown away my wife and I were on our honeymoon. And although this place is secluded and private and nested up on a mountain (feeling a million miles from civilization), there was never a dull moment. My wife and I spent a week here, and we could have spent 51 more weeks there no problem. Mar Al Cielo has a lot to offer, it was tough to choose what to do even with a completely open agenda. You could spend days hiking around your 11 acres of hilly and junglesome land, or walk down to the beach with a 6-pack, chips and guacamole. You could go snorkeling or horseback riding, or even on a whale tour to name a few easily accessible activities. Every night we had no problem taking in a real Pacific sunset as it dipped into an ocean with no end which was essentially our front yard for the week. One night we decided to get a sunset dinner made by Chef Carlos himself (which I highly recommend, no offense to my wife's cooking which was phenomenal as well *cough *cough) which came with the whole 9 yards of margaritas, a beautifully obscure cut of steak paired with a sauce (which my wife and I tried to replicate and came nowhere close, she is still a great cook though) that was to die for, an amazing desert, and wine, sorry I am going off about it but it was unbelievable. In the city of Lo De Marcos, you can feel welcome while amongst true locals. There was no such thing as a tourist there because everyone who came from out of town was truly accepted. The lodge itself was worth the whole stay, feeling just enough outside allowing you to enjoy the weather, with the comfort of being indoors, enjoying the beautiful views and a bed that might as well have been made out of clouds. We enjoyed many star-filled nights in the outdoor bathtub, and shared too many laughs situated in the outdoor kitchen and lounge which is also solely yours through-out your stay. The second we left was also the second we were trying to figure when we could come back.
The property cannot be more special and spectacular. Jodi and Carlos are amazing hosts that have thought of every detail to make our stay unforgettable. We felt at home immediately. You basically have an entire mountain/forest/beach to enjoy. The place has such a beautiful energy. Perfect for active people that likes to explore and be surprised by the power of nature. The only hard part was leaving. We will be back. No doubt.
If like us, you looked for some peace and tranquility, look no more. Mar al Cielo surpassed my expectations.
There are things here that could be improved or changed but... The feeling, surroundings, nature and vistas that you will experience will make these issues non important.
Internet was the only thing that we missed since we need it for business. The whole area of Lo De Marcos is having the same issue so just be ready to deal with it if you need the internet.
Great place, magnificent views and such a nice and peacefull place to connect with nature and yourself.
I am very fortunate to travel to amazing places for my work in the travel business. This was one of my favorite places on Earth. I had amazing sleep, it's nearly silent (with no dogs and roosters that tormented me in neighboring towns). I booked very quickly and did not fully process that Carlos is a terrific chef and that he could prepare lovely dinners on site!
My husband and I stayed at Mar al Cielo for nine days and each one was perfect. Jodi and Carlos (and Raul!) are super nice/helpful and their property is gorgeous, peaceful, clean and private. We spent most days hanging out in (under?) the clifftop palapa, reading, playing cards and eating chips and guac. When we did manage to pull ourselves away from whale watching and lounging, we enjoyed a couple of mornings in Sayulita (stay away from the main beach and head north), the Tianguis Market in La Peñita (like a local flea market, not a ton in terms of unique arts & crafts, but definitely worth the morning trip) and an evening in Lo de Marcos (great tacos at the place Jodi and Carlos recommend for Friday and Saturday nights). Carlos cooked for us two nights and his food was delicious.
Some tips, in no particular order:
// Stay at least a week. We could have easily stayed another five days (on top of our nine).
// We liked the flexibility renting a car allowed us. We ended up paying around US $275 for our whole stay, which was definitely worth it.
// Carlos can get fresh oysters, shrimp and fish. He can also do Mexican food (which is not really featured on the menu). Definitely ask for off-menu preparations. And if you're an adventurous eater, tell him!
// Bring hiking shoes – nothing heavy duty, even Keen sandals will do, but you’ll want them for hiking around the property and for walking into town. Also bring water shoes for a better time in the surf.
// Get a bunch of empanadas at La Empanaderia Sayulita. They kept well in the fridge and made for an easy and yummy toaster oven breakfast.
// You’ll definitely want long pants and long sleeve shirts at night (in December for sure, not sure about the other months). Would NOT recommend jeans – loose cotton pants would be best. I was glad to have a cotton long sleeve t-shirt with me, but wished I had some cotton pajama bottoms and a light flannel shirt.
// Bring a reusable water bottle for each person to avoid plastic bottles!
// There is WiFi, but it’s very slow. Recommend downloading movies, books and music at home before you arrive.
// Don’t hesitate to ask Jodi for recommendations for paddle boarding, boat trips, bird watching, restaurants, etc. She’s really helpful and it’s nice to get info from a local.
This is the perfect place for getting away from it all. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
My husband and I chose Mar al Cielo for our 15 year wedding anniversary. We were looking for something away from the hustle and bustle and secluded. This property went over and beyond our expectations! When you first arrive you are taken back by the beauty of the views and sounds of the crashing waves below. We had made plans to go into town the first day to the market but couldn't pry ourselves away from the property! The house is wonderful. It was very clean and relaxing. Bugs were not a big issue like we were expecting. You have views from the bed pretty much in every direction. We slept every night with the windows open, feeling the breeze and listening to the ocean. We woke to the sunrise and showered watching the birds fly and sing about. We LOVED the outdoor shower and bath and used it regularly and never ran out of hot water. The kitchen had everything we needed when we decided to cook. The palapa was wonderful, I will never forget those views! One night while eating dinner a coatimundi visited the pond for water! We had Carlos make us dinner multiple times and we were never let down, it was wonderful! Raul's wife also made us dinner one night and it was amazing too. Jodi was top notch in every way. She was always there when we had questions and she went above and beyond to make sure we were happy. We called her asking for a ride to some nearby towns (we didn't rent a car) and she got us a personal tour for the day with a stop for lunch! She really made it feel like an all inclusive vacation! We went on the bird tour with Luis and were so happy we did! We highly reccommend it. The private beach is, well, very private! We were able to do some nude sunbathing and swimming without worry. The trail to the private beach on the front of the property can be a little strenuous and steep but it's manageable. You can also go to the beach from the driveway and it's an easier walk. I do recommend you bring some type of water shoes, there are rocks on the beach and in the water. The house and the palapa have wifi, added bonus! If you want to relax, get away from it all, and connect with nature you'll absolutely love this place!
