This is an awesome location for a family vacation. It is right on the beach with local accesses to Lake Michigan. The hosts are friendly and helpful and provide everything you need (both inside and out) for a very enjoyable, worry-free vacation. The rooms are beautifully decorated and immaculate (very North Woodsy, which I love!) Also beautiful scenery from all windows, whether it be lake or woods views. Boats, life jackets, beach toys are all provided. Inside, the kitchen is wonderful, with a coffee maker that grinds the coffee for you, fridge with filtered water and ice maker on the door, pots, pans, blender, toaster, and everything else you might need. Games, cards, movies, cable TV are also provided. Outside, there's a wonderful wooden swing to sit on and watch gorgeous sunsets or just relax and watch the kids enjoying the beach. There's a picnic table in the back yard, a grill and all kinds of chairs for outside enjoyment. Every morning I took my coffee (and my 7-year old grandson) to the chairs at the end of the pier and we enjoyed the view of the lake and the ducks (with their babies) swimming by. What a great way to start the day! There are lots of maps and information regarding local activities and places to go and things to do. You're within 10 minutes of quaint little lake-side towns, like Arcadia and Frankfort. My family and friends have been coming here for, at least, the last 15 years and we'll continue to do so. We're in love with the place! The bible verse that states "the heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament showath His handiwork " certainly describes this location.
We enjoyed our stay immensely! This property is well-maintained, clean, and comfortable. Although we had the maximum, 9, in our party, we never felt it was too small. The bathrooms, in particular, were spacious, and had large counters, which we really appreciated. The room at the top of the stairs did have a door but you had to walk through it from either of the upstairs bedrooms to access the bathroom and the downstairs. This was not a problem for us, however, because my daughter is a deep sleeper and had no trouble sleeping there. The place is nicer than the pictures, although there was not as much sand as it looks in the picture. We enjoyed all the boats especially and the owners (who happened to be staying next door) couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. Lower Herring Lake is very close to Lake Michigan and that made for good exploring by boat without having to use our car. Frankfort is a beautiful town and we enjoyed the fact that it was only 10-15 minutes away by car. The beach in Frankfort is amazing and there are lots of great shops and restaurants. We found a hot dog restaurant that made the best chili dogs that I have ever tasted. There is even a Kilwins for ice cream. The only thing we regretted was the swimming at Lower Herring Lake. The water is very clear and clean, but the swimming area is shallow and weedy with stones on the bottom. The kids got water shoes and that helped, but it was hard to swim out to the raft without feeling weeds. My brother, who is tall, thought he could feel weeds even when swimming at the raft. There was a swimming area on the other side of the lake that was nice and sandy though, in the conservancy--you just have to take the boat over to it.
This is my kids' favorite place to spend a week of their summer vacation! There is so much to do we always wish that we had another week to do it all. First of all, you could spend a week just around the property, swimming, building sandcastles, kayaking, biking, hiking and playing in the waves. However, we always have to take a trip into Frankfort for ice cream, visit the Cherry Bowl Drive-In theatre, plan a float trip down the Platte River, watch the sunset at Point Betsie, walk the Frankfort Pier, go to the Elberta Farmer's Market on Thursday mornings, and a visit to Gwen Frostic..phew! There are great restaurants in the area, too. Check out the Cherry Hut in Beulah, the delicious L'Chaim deli in Frankfort, and the yummy breakfast spot in Frankfort (right of M-22).
Even when the weather is not perfect you can go shopping in all the adorable shops in Frankfort, and the house is stocked with games for an old-fashioned game day!
The house is cozy and welcoming. The beach is beautiful. Fantanstic! Thank You for a great stay!!
I absolutely love this place! A smaller lake (2miles x 1.5miles) approximately but perfect for water skiing, wakeboarding and fishing. A nice new dock that we used for our rental boat right in front of the house. There was a great private beach for the kids to play on directly in front of the house that has all glass sliding doors up front. The house or "cabin" itself it cozy and clean. It has a "swiss chalet" feel to it. The lake is amazing! Perfect weather during our week and the water was warm enough to swim in everyday even with the baby. There was a big fire ring right on the beach and everynight we had a bonfire and a "star" party wiith somores. I liked having use of the kyaks and rowboat also for the kids, and we took them on a river float also and saved a couple of bucks. The house has everything you can imagine, in case you forget something don't worry there is probably one there.
The town of Frankfort is about 5 miles away and has everything you picture in a Norman Rockwell depiction. There are literally 5 Ice Cream Parlors that I ate at, confectioners, golf, resturants, pubs with incredible fried perch (Smokehouse and Villa Marine), live music, a hardware store, grocery store, drive up A&W, a lighthouse and pier to walk, public beach, etc. The town is on a harbor with the town of Elberta on the other side with a cool little bar called the Cabbage Shed that also had decent food and music. I loved going to town everymoring for fresh bakery goods or into Belah for fresh cherry products from the 90 year old Cherry Hut resturant. The best are the pies, cherry salsa, and cherry coffee with cherry carmel roll. There is a Farmer's market to get fresh stuff from almost everyday somewhere. We paid a charter fishing boat and caugh over 150lbs of King Salmon in Lake Michigan in about 4 hours. It was awsome and filled the freezer at home also. Lots of fishing everywhere - the house, the piers, charter, and the local rivers. Michigan likes to mark stuff with roadsigns now so get out of the car and take a look, we found places with no one around that were incredible slices of nature. So breathtaking, water everywhere, the world famous Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course about 4 miles away also, top notch!
Lots to do, our kids flew kites everyday right in front of the lake and played on the boats while we relaxed. Plenty at night between Frankfort and Beluah nightspots. This is small town USA and amazing there is still places like this coming from Los Angeles:)
This house was advertised as having four bedrooms...it didn't mention that one was a wide hallway at the top of the stairs. There is no water trampoline. The place is so secluded that the other activities are all 2+ hours away. The only thing to do was to fish and sit at the beach. Do not go here if you want to enjoy a large variety of activities.
My family had a wonderful vacation week. The home is very charming and welcoming. The kitchen is stocked with everything, more than I have at home. Beds are comfy and cozy. The view looking out over Lower Herring Lake is incredible and we had blazing sunsets too. When you turn off M22, you drive thru a forest full of tall trees, then you arrive at your little paradise on the lake. I loved to go for walks through the woods. One morning we woke up to see a swan on the lake. My family had a great time in Frankfort walking out to the lighthouse. Sleeping Bear Dunes are close by and make for a nice day trip, along with Betsie Point Lighthouse. Highly recommend this property.
