Tamarind House means different things to the people who have already experienced its beauty and legendary hospitality.
The rare luxury of space and privacy. Room to relax, to breathe, to rejuvenate and dream. Happy memories of drinks and laughter under the tamarind tree. Long white curtains billowing in the breeze. Swimming in the pool under a full moon. Bouganvillea climbing the walls - fuchsia, violet and orange flowers set against a clear blue sky Rum cocktails and fish cakes at sunset.
Tamarind House is located just off the Anse Chastanet Road approximately 1.5 miles from Soufriere and .5 miles from Anse Chastanet Beach. It is a 10 minute walk down to the beach and a 20 minute hike back up the hill. Covering 8850 Sq. Ft. of space, the house is constructed of local stone with exceptionally high 25 foot ceilings and Barbados terracotta tiles throughout. The main house has three bedrooms and bathrooms while the separate Cottage is a master bedroom suite with its own living room, kitchen, dressing area, four poster king size bed and terrace.
The 35 x 15 foot totally private pool is situated below the Cottage and has 1060 sq ft of terrace and shade pavilion around it. The pool edge is open on one side to give uninterrupted views of the Pitons. The house also has a professional size tennis court with a Bioflex surface and of course superb views of the Pitons as you play.
In the main house, a descending staircase leads you into a cool, circular courtyard filled with banana plants and flowers. As you pass through the graceful stone arch doorway, the enormous 2550 sq ft living room stretches away before you and leads to the terrace where the tamarind tree grows up out of the tiles. This fabulous tree provides shade and coolness to the house all through the day. The living room features two seven foot settees and a very large travertine stone coffee table. The round reproduction antique dining table seats 6-8.
The master bedroom has a beautiful king size four poster bed, side tables, hand carved standing cheval mirror and small armoire. There is a walk in closet with a safe, Italian tiled bathroom with shower and double sinks. Open the shower doors and look at the Pitons while bathing! The second bedroom has a queen antique four poster bed, private terrace, Italian tiled bathroom with shower also open to the view. There is a walk in closet and two blue and white Chinese lamps beside the bed. The third bedroom is for children and has two four poster beds, a double and a twin. It looks out onto a private terrace and the courtyard. The Cottage master bedroom suite has three graceful stone arch openings and 25 foot ceilings. Long white curtains at each doorway billow out in the breeze. Two large 7 foot couches with blue and white cushions, a large coffee table and antique tables beside the king size four poster bed make this a wonderfully romantic space. A collection of paintings by St. Kitts artist Kate Spencer are on display here. There is a marble tiled bathroom with shower and a dressing area plus a kitchen with fridge, stove, glasses, plates etc. Exceptionally high quality 100% cotton sheets, and plush towels are standard in all the bedrooms and bathrooms. Each bedroom has a hair dryer provided. Electricity is 220 volts. Staff included six days a week Monday - Saturday for cooking and cleaning. I lived in St. Lucia from the early 1980's until 2011. Tamarind House was a private home and always open to friends and family. It is now open for memorable family gatherings by renting on VRBO. I can answer almost any question you might have about the Soufriere area. And I have a wide circle of people who can help to make your holiday a dream come true.
Wonderfully large space, room for everyone to have their own space but be together as well. Fantastic staff who cook fabulous meals.
My sisters have declared this "Best Vacation Ever!!". Thank you for sharing your beautiful house and country with us. Cheryl, Ann, and Zelia were so kind to us, and the food they cooked was delicious! Words cannot describe the view no matter how many adjectives I try, but my sister Roxanne kept looking out and saying "nope, still not tired of it." You could stay here forever and never tire of staring at this beautiful scene. Happy New Year! and Thank you so much.
W had a wonderful time at Tamarind House this May. We were a group of 4 adults with 3 young kids (ages 3, 3, and 6). We spent many hours in the pool, playing and gazing at the Pitons. The pool area is beautifully done, with lots of seating and shade, as well as lots of space in the pool, and even some blow up pool toys for the kids.
Cheryl and Ann took amazing care of us. This was the reason we booked this home, based on the previous reviews, and we were not disappointed. They are very warm, caring, and amazing cooks. We had delicious food all week, and we even had them do the grocery shopping for us (for an extra fee, which was reasonable).
The home is spacious and well appointed. The mosquito nets were very good quality, so no worries about bites.
We used Poppo as a driver (we did not rent as the roads up to the house are very difficult to drive, SO glad we did not rent a vehicle), and he was fantastic. A very safe and courteous driver, and reasonable rates.
Nancy was fantastic to deal with, and answered all our pre-trip questions quickly and thoroughly.
As we were there in May, it was VERY warm with very little breeze through the house. There is no A/C as this is a house designed to take advantage of the trade winds. I think in the cooler months this works very well, but it was really warm for us. There are fans in the bedrooms, which were just enough for us, but in the main rooms when there is no wind, it can be a bit hot. So, we just spent more time in the pool. Do not let this stop you from booking this beautiful home, it is just something I wish I was mentally prepared for=)
Thank you so much for having us in your beautiful home!
Our family just returned from a week vacation at the Tamarind house. Nancy was very flexible and easy to work with. She even arranged to have a birthday cake made for our daughter! The house is stunning. The architecture of the home with all the artwork and furnishings is gorgeous. The views of the pitons, flowers and fruit trees make you feel like you are in the Garden of Eden. Waking up to the pitons, stunning views and birds singing every morning was wonderful. One of the best parts of Tamarind is Ann and Cheryl. Together these two fabulous ladies prepare breakfast and lunch everyday. They also keep the home spotless. The food was delicious! We were served daily fresh squeezed juice, and different flavored gelato almost every day. We were never disappointed with any meal Ann prepared. She even gave me the recipe of one of our favorites! We spent the majority of our days at the pool that has an incredible view of the ocean and pitons. The beach is within walking distance. We only booked one excursion due to truly enjoying everything Tamarind had to offer. Relaxation at its best!
Tamarind House is just absolutely stunning, the view, the beautiful flowering grounds and the dramatic Beaty of the house itself. The house is pretty much beautiful stone and large expansive heavy wooden doors, that when opened the beginning and end of the home and the lush grounds becomes a bit blurred. The house is beautifully furnished and full of magnificent artwork and an eclectic library of music.
The island is so green and alive - there are so many different things to explore. But Tamarind House will make it difficult to leave. When I sat on the patio and drank my morning coffee I felt like it almost didn't seem real, it was so perfect.
And it doesn't stop there, the house comes with a staff that have been there as long Tamarind House has. And it shows, the connection Ann, Cheryl and Paul have with the house and each other is apparent. This house is loved, and you in turn feel that love. Ann and Cheryl spoiled us with their cooking and freshening up the house each day with fresh linens, flowers. But best were their smiles, always fun to talk with. Paul keeps everything working and the grounds in pristine shape.
And then there is Nancy, she is an amazing host. She is very quick to respond, warm and informative. She is willing to accommodate any reasonable request if she can and she is gracious. She spent a great deal of her personal time and effort to help one of the members of our group that was having problems getting a visa for the trip. She helped quickly and never seemed put out. She checked in on us, never obtrusive.
All the way around this has been one of the best stays and interactions I have had. The only less than outstanding thing I can say Has nothing to do with the home staff or Nancy. During our stay, our group went diving a few days. I worry for the reef and the marine life around the island, there is no marine park- and with all the boat traffic and overfishing the reefs were in poor condition. I was genuinely surprised at how little marine life there was. Hopefully that is something the island has in its future.
If Nancy will have us, we would love to return!
My wife and I and our 19 year old son and 16 year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed our week at Tamarind House. Based on the pictures, property description and other reviews, we had very high expectations about the property, and the house and the amenities exceeded even our lofty expectations. This is a very unique property. The photos on the VRBO site are representative of the home and the views but still don't do either justice. The views from every part of the property are spectacular and never get old. The den, dining area, master, second bedroom, and cottage each have direct, open views of the ocean and the Pitons. The open air design allows the trade winds to keep the house very comfortable throughout the day. Also, the property is naturally shaded around the large den and dining area. The pool is larger than we expected (and plenty big enough) and is well maintained. The private tennis court is also well maintained and gets shade during the morning hours and a breeze most of the time. We thoroughly enjoyed both the pool and the tennis court. The staff at the house are exceptional. Ann and Cheryl are outstanding cooks. Every meal was excellent and had a St Lucia flavor - breakfast, lunch, dinner, deserts (homemade gelato). Just tell them fish, chicken, etc. and let them do the rest. We normally are very active on vacations, but not this time. Except for one day of deep sea fishing, we stayed on site and just enjoyed all the property has to offer. We have been fortunate to vacation at some great locations and properties over the years, and Tamarind House is at the top of the list. It is a very unique vacation opportunity.
We had no issues with bugs or wildlife. As other reviews have noted, the road is rough getting to the house but we weren't driving so it wasn't a problem. The driver Po Po is very nice and always available.
Finally, the owner, Nancy, is great to deal with. She is very patient in answering questions and provides all the information and coordination you need to make the trip easy. She has a local property manager who can coordinate your travel and other needs on the island. Everything will be exactly as described and promised.
I have deliberately waited for over four months before writing this review. I wanted it to be objective. I was afraid if I did this too soon after the trip, my words would be influenced by emotions that may not have reflected the true experience at Tamarind House. Nothing has changed in regard to my thoughts. This was the most wonderful place I have ever had the pleasure to experience.
Nancy's concierge, Shermika, met us at the airport and accompanied us to the house. It is a rather treacherous (but thankfully short) drive from Soufriere to Tamarind House. The moment you get out of the car, you are greeted with a fabulous view of the Caribbean Sea. And it only gets better. The home is nestled on a hillside, completely secluded from neighbor’s eyes. The staff, Cheryl, Ann and Paul, take care of every need. The most difficult thing I had to do all week was decide what meals to have prepared for us.
Spectacular is not superlative enough to describe this property. I felt like we were truly in paradise. The layout of the home is designed to give ultimate views while affording privacy. The foliage was tropical, lush and exquisitely beautiful. We had the house and the cottage to ourselves (our son and his girlfriend joined us) and spent seven glorious days just relaxing, swimming, playing tennis, playing word games and board games, watching cruise ships and hummingbirds, reading, napping, laughing, crying, teasing, eating, drinking, watching falling stars at night (the sky is amazing - the stars look close enough to touch). We were able to let go of the fear and stress we had been struggling with for the last five months and just enjoy each others company.
The pictures on the website cannot convey the heart and soul of this house. All of our meals were on the covered deck looking out over the Caribbean Sea, acres of lush foliage, and a magnificent view of the Pitons. The sunrise peeking over the hilltops, morning rain showers, rainbows, hummingbirds, geckos – all of this and seeing it as we enjoyed a lavish breakfast with French pressed coffee, pancakes, eggs, bacon, fresh fruit and bread.
The winds gently stirring the plants, night sounds from the jungle-like surroundings, birds calling to one another, sporadic rain showers with stunning rainbows, and luscious fragrances from the foliage. If you want a place that can truly heal your soul while filling your mind with spectacular images that will last a lifetime, this is it.
We just came back from a week at Tamarind House and can confirm that all that has been said about the place is absolutely true. The house itself is truly unique, lots of wide open spaces and amazing architecture. Built not so long ago, it has a unique old Caribbean feel to it. Large airy rooms make you feel like you are part of the incredible scenery outside. With views overlooking beautiful flowers and trees, the Pitons, the sea, a gorgeous sunset, sitting on the deck at anytime is like watching a giant IMAX nature movie. We particularly enjoyed the pool early in the AM, and at dusk when the light was spectacular. Playing tennis in front of the Pitons is also a special experience. Everything was as advertised, Easy to find and well organized. Shermika the house manager was most helpful. Ann and Cheryl the housekeepers were amazing cooks and took all the stress off any food shopping and cooking. Let them cook away, they know what they're doing. Great beach 5min drive at Anse Chastenet, We used 'Feel Good" Water Taxi, Daniel Abraham (# at the house) will take you to fantastic snorkeling sites at reasonable rates. Also ate at Boucan Chocolate Restaurant and Orlandos in Soufriere, very good, Note, road to house is intimidating at first but you get used to it pretty quickly. Car handy but not really needed. Enjoy Tamarind House.
Rain forest tours, mineral baths, waterfalls, massages in house, tennis coach, personal trainer. Rainforest walks can be arranged. Climb the Pitons, bathe in outdoor mineral baths, diving and snorkeling near by.
