If you're looking for a relaxing, secluded getaway, Arthur's Place on the Beach on Grand Bahama Island is for you! Enjoy long walks along the white sand beaches. At low tide you can walk for miles in either direction and walk out into the ocean at least the distance of a football field onto beautiful white sand. Swimming in the crystal-clear water is great as it is shallow and calm. Enjoy the gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. Huge screened lanai with clear views of the ocean by day -- and starry vistas at night. Port Lucaya nightlife is only 25 minutes away with many fine restaurants, pubs, and gambling! During the day, Port Lucaya offers championship golfing. and lots of shopping.
From the moment we walked into Arthur's Place on the Beach, we were hooked! Spacious, cozy, comfortable, are just the beginning. The owners said to bring few clothes and use the laundry when needed; and to stuff lots of comfort food in our suitcases instead! Excellent advice and that's what we did. We did most of our cooking in the wonderfully supplied kitchen. Just hit the supermarket before your drive out!
While Arthur's place is about 25 miles from town, it is a sanctuary, an oasis away from the crowds... a great way to relax. We simply drove in to do the UNEXO swim w/ the dolphins adventure and the discover scuba dive. We met the Kayak Nature Tour at the Lucayan National Park (only 5 minutes from the house) to do our Kayak trip (fun). We even rented a boat on the EAST END for a four hour snorkeling trip to two blue holes and two reefs.
Arthur's beach isn't too shabby as well. You will walk out for a few hundred feet before the water is up to your thighs. Snorkel out past the grass and you'll see starfish. Continue on to the reef which is surprisingly nice! One day we took Arthur's raft out to the reef with a makeshift sand in milk jug anchor. The kids loved it.
There's a TV in every room w/ cable. There is a nice DVD and CD collection. Lots of books too, if you forget your own. Games too (we beat the kids at Sequence)!
The Master bathroom has a huge shower and a deep jacuzzi... nice when you come off the beach and want to relax with the jets.
The back porch is screened in and has table and chairs for evening dining. There are also lots of lounge chairs for staring at the beach. Oh, so nice.
There's even an exterior shower (w/ warm water).
Bottom line is that you can't go wrong with this property. The color of the water... the walks on the beach... sunsets... incredible cloud formations... shelling... I would go again... and again!
The house has a postcard-worthy view of the ocean and a walk across the backyard leads you to a beautiful beach on which you are often alone, with no one in sight in either direction. We went to Gold Rock Beach nearby, which is supposed to be the best beach on the island, and were disappointed since it didn't compare at all to the beach at Arthur's. The home is about 20 minutes or so from the city, which is the closest place for groceries or fancier restaurants, but it is an easy drive and the tranquility at Arthur's is well worth it. My kids loved the beach, finding crabs, hermit crabs, and lizards. The house is very comfortable and clean and well-maintained. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this house for our family trip, which included my 4 kids ranging in age from 3 to 18. They all loved it. If you are looking for the business and activities of one of the tourist resorts, this isn't the place for you, but if you are looking for a peaceful vacation where your kids are free to roam and explore, and a night sky filled with more stars than you can imagine, and a beautiful beach, then this is the place for you.
My wife and I stayed with our daughter and two small grandchildren (4 and 1) at Arthurs Place on the Beach from Jan 9-16, 2012. It was exactly as advertised (in fact is extremely good value) and is ideally suited for families with small children and for those who really aren't there for nightlife given the distance from Port Lucaya and Freeport (20 or so miles). The property is well-maintained, with a large back yard area fronting right on the beach which goes for miles in either direction. I think we may have seen a total of 10 people on the beach during the entire week yet we always felt secure as there a number of occupied, high quality residences in the immediate neighbourhood. The Owner, Arthur, was very helpful in assisting us with directions and ensuring through Theresa his caretaker that we had some milk in the fridge for our late arrival and had a crib all set up for us when we got to the house. The beach is a real selling point-soft sand and at low tide you can walk a good 300 metres out into the water and hunt for shells; we saw manta rays and flying fish as well as picking up a few live conchs (small ones). The house is not far from the National Park which is worth a visit- much to our surprise we saw raccoons in the park and were advised that they were introduced in the 1920's. We also enjoyed the Garden in the Groves with our little ones.
We would be extremely reluctant to rent anywhere east of Gambier Point as the communities are quite isolated and appeared run down. Bishops at High Point was the only local place worth visiting- great food at a reasonable price in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Cracked conch and BBQ ribs are his specialties. The Port Lucaya market was fun but the International Market is not worth a visit unless you want to buy fresh fish in the parking lot- the snapper was to die for. Highly recommend Billy Joes on the beach in Port Lucaya- very laid back but great food-particularly the grouper.
Arthur did advise before we left Australia that it is extremely difficult to get provisions for the house locally so we strongly recommend shopping at Solomons before you go to the house-and buy up big unless you want to drive 20 miles to get milk!
Anyway, a wonderful stay, a relaxing week and we have no hesitation in providing Arthur's Place with our highest recommendation!

Arthur & Melba's property is beautiful, the view is amazing. We had great weather everyday, snorkeled, walked for hours on the beach, toured the island. The people were very friendly, pleasant, appreciated our business. Back at Arthur's this house is perfect for families, room for togetherness yet designed for privacy. The beach was our private haven where we spent most of our time, remote, beautiful. Camp fires with a full moon at night, life was good.
I stayed at Arthur's house in April with my family and have already decided this will be an annual trip!! The house is beautiful and tastefully decorated, and the view from the back is awesome!! The master bedroom and bath are great, the other bedrooms are really nice as well. The kitchen is great, everything you need is there. I would suggest taking as much snack food as possible the prices in the grocery store are about triple what you would pay at home.
As for the beach I can't begin to tell you how beautiful it is, low tide you can walk out in the water really far and high tide is great for snorkeling and swimming. My two year old nephew just loved the beach he called it his "big sandbox". We collected tons of shells and sand dollar and bisquits. We swam out to the reef right in front of the house and it was great! We also made out own little Corona commercial on the beach, the adirondack chairs are great!
The owner recommended a few local resturants located up the beach and the food was really good and the staff very friendly.
You will need to rent a car to drive into Freeport/Port Lacaya but the straw market, casino and fish market are well worth the ride. The straw market where the cruise ships dock was very nice as well. The people are very pleasant and seem to want to go out of their way to please you.
There is a national park right down the road which we visited and had a great time exploring the caves, walking through the wet lands and on the beach.
This was the best vacation I have been on in a long time and I would definately recommend Arthur's House if your looking for a secluded quiet get away with family and friends.
What a great trip! Three couples and a 9 month old spent just over a week and had an amazing time. This property was perfect for all of us, with enough room to escape each other when we needed space, and to be together when we wanted to laugh and play.
While there we golfed, went scuba diving (Caribbean Divers, Presley) , took long walks on the beach in both directions, met several of the neighbors, and truly had a great time. We ate very well - both Bishops and Doris’ were great for a late afternoon lunch and rum drinks after a morning of Scuba Diving or golf.
At night we took full advantage of the kitchen and grill. We shopped at Solomons, Sawyers and City Market, bought fresh fish and Conch at the local fish market place. Cooking can at times take some creativity as the produce and availability of some items are not what we are used to at home, but that is part of the adventure of renting homes and truly visiting a destination - not just the resort center.
In total we found the house to be clean, exceeeded our expectation based on description and pictures and was just the break from winter we all were in desparate need of.
Arthur was very easy to work with and very accomodating. I would highly recommend this property and hope to return.
The house is located on the East End of the island between Freetown and High Rock. This is where the most beautiful beaches are located.
