Aloha and welcome to Mika Mizu, serenity in Hilo. Here you will experience a unique and memorable Hawaiian vacation. Mika Mizu is a spacious, but cozy one bedroom cottage, all on one level, no steps! This beautiful cottage is located in a soothing and natural setting with waterfalls and abundant flora and fauna. It is less than one mile to historic downtown Hilo, yet you feel far removed. Note: to avoid the additional "Service Fee" recently implemented by Home Away to their Instant Booking feature, please click on "Send A Message" and not the "Request to Book" option. You will receive a prompt reply/quote from us for only the charges that apply to your vacation at Mika Mizu.

Mika Mizu was designed for guests, but will comfortably accommodate 3. The cottage is stocked with amenities such as spices and cooking staples in an efficiency kitchen with a full size refrigerator, a built-in 2-burner stovetop, a microwave/convection oven, a toaster and a gas BBQ grill for outdoor cooking. Also provided are both high speed internet/WiFi and cable TV. It has been tastefully furnished in a casually elegant Island style, creating a very congenial ambiance for your comfort and enjoyment. You will be amazed at this wonderful vacation find.

Hilo is the second largest city in the Hawaiian Islands. There is a four-year University of Hawaii campus in Hilo, several fine restaurants, a Tsunami museum, and interesting events occurring at all times of the year. The natural beauty of the area is astounding. Many waterfalls, nature hikes, boogie boarding, surfing, botanical gardens, and scenic drives through rainforests are all nearby. Volcano National Park is approximately 45 minutes away. Kailua-Kona, the tourist area of the Big Island, with its many high-end Kohala Coast hotels, is one and a half hours away. Waimea, the paniolo (cowboy) region of Parker Ranch fame is approximately one hour. The Waipio Valley and its lovely lookout is one hour. You can take helicopter rides over this taro-filled valley with its dramatic cliffs that plunge to the sea. You can do the same if you wish to see what our very active Kilaeua Volcano is up to. And Mauna Kea, our gigantic mountain with its world renowned Keck Observatory, might be snow capped while you are here - quite the sight looking up from the shores of the blue Pacific.

Note: Mika Mizu is not appropriate for children under 6 years

About Sara/Jamie

We met in Hawaii, fell in love in Hawaii....and the rest is history. Now we get to share our good fortune with guests from around the world.

Why Sara/Jamie chose Hilo District

We are happy to have this wonderful cottage in Hawaii, and we love the Big Island, its many sights and its friendly people. Hilo gives one the chance to get a feel of the real Hawaii. The Farmers Market in town is a profusion of color from the many exotic flowers, fruits, and native crafts. One comes away with one comes away with a special feeling after exploring this unique area.

What makes this house unique

Great price for a beautifully furnished, comfortable and spacious cottage, located right in Hilo. Easy to get to many of the Big Island sights, lots to do and see.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Another wonderful visit to Hilo and Mika Mizu. We visited a couple of places we missed seeing on previous trips. The Lyman museum is a great place to learn about the islands and we were lucky enough to have a private tour of an orchid farm in Pahoa. We ate at Hilo Bay Café, new to us and old standbys Café Pesto and Pineapples.

We hate leaving here tomorrow but will take fond memories of Hilo (and Kona) and Mika Mizu with us. This is the perfect place to stay and we would live right here if we could.

Mahalo Jamie!

Perfect, if you have quiet neighbors

  • 3 of 5

I agree with all the wonderful things the others are saying -- Mika Mizu is gorgeous, impeccably clean, stylish, and well-appointed. The owners were prompt, thorough, and friendly in our communications. Given all this, I hate to give this property less than 5 stars, but there was key info not in the description or other reviews that I would have appreciated before I booked.

This property is next door to a sister rental called Mika Taki, which is a 4-bedroom house that features a large patio that is only ~20 ft from Mika Mizu's bedroom windows. Also, only ~8 ft away from the same windows is the shared gravel driveway, and the gate to Mika Taki. All of this means that if the Mika Taki neighbors are coming and going, there are 4 bedrooms-worth of people with their headlights and car door slams and alarm-honking, and if they're all out on the patio, you have no choice but to hear everything. This was otherwise a quiet and peaceful area (we didn't hear a peep from any of the other neighbors), so 4 bedrooms-worth of people's talking really takes over. In our case, we were unlucky and had loud Mika Taki neighbors who shriek-talked at a volume that would be reasonable if they were at a rock concert, and also had a (frequently crying) baby. During the day when the frogs weren't calling, their voices carried clearly into our cottage even when they were inside. On our 1st night, pouring rain kept them inside, and the frogs drowned out the rest. On our 2nd night, after a loud afternoon, they all went out for the evening, so all we had to deal with was the racket they made as they came in. But on our 3rd & final night, they caroused just feet away on their patio, piercing the din of the coqui frogs and defeating our earplugs. I went over at 8:30pm to ask them to bring it down a notch, and was rudely cut off by a woman who simply denied they were being loud. By 10pm, we were fed up and I was looking up the owner's phone number to complain when we caught a lucky break and it started pouring rain, which finally ended the patio chatter. This was an aggravating and unpleasant experience given that we selected Mika Mizu because we thought it would be a quiet, private getaway.

If you have a large group of quiet (or at least considerate) people and can rent both properties, I'd highly recommend Mika Mizu. Except for the close proximity of the neighboring rental, it was absolutely perfect.

Owner's Response: "Aloha, We wish you would have been in touch with us at the first sign of having disruptive neighbors, as we would have contacted them immediately with the complaint. Then if they persisted with the disruptive behavior we would have asked them to leave the property at once! It is our policy to never allow loud gatherings, as the property is located in a very quiet residential neighborhood. We do appreciate your comments about the house being gorgeous, impeccably clean, stylish, and well-appointed. Mahalo!"

Enchanted waterfall retreat

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed here every chance we've gotten and find the jungle atmosphere, sounds, and creek view from the lanai the very best to wake up to and go to sleep by. I turn 70 y/o this year and felt my big gift was another swim all alone in the large pond surround by flowers, washing my hair in the water fall. The cottage is just right for two people with lots of windows and tropical interiors. The nice shower has a full window looking into the creek and jungle. I highly recommend this property for fun and relaxation.

Beautiful & Gracious Home, Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent just three nights at Mika Mizu and wished we had been able to book it longer. The house is beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean, outfitted with very nice appliances and fixtures, and has great quality dishes, cookware and other kitchen items. It is so nice to not have to search through a skimpy hodgepodge of thrift store junk when looking for measuring cups, spatula, or a skillet to cook your breakfast eggs in. Virtually anything you might need has been anticipated and provided. We appreciated the binder of helpful information, the Hawaiian treats, and the many other thoughtful touches.

The bed was very comfortable and the shower was fantastic! The location of the house, just a few minute's drive up the hill from downtown Hilo, is really perfect--close enough, but still "away."

Two things to be aware of: first, no air conditioning means the house will be warm when you return in the evening, but after opening up the doors and windows, it cooled off soon enough. Nights were always comfortable. Second, the Coqui frogs (and whatever other critters are outside singing their songs after dark) are quite deafening at first. I got used to them after the first night and was not disturbed, either while awake or sleeping, but my husband found them to be a bit annoying at times. If you need quiet while sleeping, be sure to bring some earplugs.

We will definitely stay at Mika Mizu when we visit the Hilo area in the future. Thank you, Sara & Jamie, for providing such a wonderful home away from home. You have set the bar at the very top; we left your house hoping that our next rental in Holualoa would be as nice.

Mahalo!

Beautiful home in private setting, close to Hilo

  • 5 of 5

We spent three nights at Mika Mizu at the beginning of March and enjoyed our time there very much. The house is a short drive up the hill from Hilo and its location, tucked away in the trees, feels very private. The owners have thoughtfully provided everything you might need, including a binder of helpful information. There are some pantry basics available, as well as sunscreen and bug repellent. The furnishings and fixtures are beautiful and of high quality, including the cookware, dishes & flatware. Everything was impeccably clean and well maintained. The bed is very comfortable, and the shower is great! The night time sounds of the frogs are amazingly loud, but I got used to them quickly--my husband found them a little overwhelming at times. With the house closed up during the day, it was quite warm when we returned each evening, but it cooled down pretty quickly after we opened up the windows and patio doors. The back deck is lovely, and overlooks the trees and valley. We will definitely stay at Mika Mizu again, next time we are on the Big Island. Mahalo, Sarah & Jamie!

WOW!!!

  • 5 of 5

Amazing!!! The pictures don't lie....it's that beautiful! My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Mika Mizu. The cottage is very clean and beautifully cared for. The location was perfect, close to the airport, easy to go north or south, as well as easy routes to the Kona side. The washer and dryer were a definite plus! We loved getting to fall asleep to the rain at night and the coqui frogs. We also saw some pretty lizard/chameleons on the property one afternoon.

The owners were a pleasure to work with and respond quickly to any questions. They also left a welcome basket- such a thoughtful touch! We had a wonderful stay! Our only regret...we couldn't stay longer! We hope to visit Hawaii again and would definitely stay here again. We will gladly recommend your property to anyone we find that is planning a trip to Hawaii! Thank you for sharing your spectacular property with us!!!

Perfection

  • 5 of 5

It is not offen a review starts of with this word, but we truly loved Mika Mizu. It was absolutely everything the owner's mentioned in their advert. First, off the location is fantastic, and the setting just lovely. It all comes together in just a few seconds upon entering this cottage - so quaint, charming and clean!!! Talk about having everything one needs and more. Coming in for a 3 night stay, one should not have to worry about needing to buy basics (all were provided) just needed the food for meals.

The shower and bathing facilities were great, good water pressure and hot. The bed was so comfortable we could have stayed all day, but alas touring needed to be done.

I also want to praise Hilo itself. What a graceful, funny, hippie, arty kinda town, just exactly what we like. We found fun informative people, and everything just charming.

Now two things that one should worry, or not worry....the frogs were no problem for us, they actually lulled us to sleep, and we loved them. Yes, it does get warm, but that is also the nature of staying in a tropical wet climate. We found it cooled down enough, and even turned off the bedroom fan. We loved the terrace, and used it for breakfast and apero before dinner.

All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend anyone coming to the Big Island to choose Hilo over Kona, and to stay in Mizu Mika...what a comfortable way to spend a vacation - thank you!!!
