About Deborah Knorr

I am a contractor who specializes in restoration of historic homes in Washington, D.C. My wife and I have lived since the late 1990s in a 1876 Victorian home in LeDroit Park that I spent almost ten years restoring.

Deborah Knorr purchased this townhome in 1999

Why Deborah Knorr chose Washington DC

This is a unique area of Washington, D.C. with great history and architecture. We have enjoyed meeting vistors from around the world in the year that we have offered the townhome as a vacation rental.

A wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful property, which I cannot recommend highly enough. We were 7 in our party, so were very comfortable spread over the 4 bedrooms. I think it would be crowded with 14 though. The house was clean and tidy and all the furnishings and equipment are of the highest quality. Patrick, the landlord, was very friendly and helpful. Although on one occassion we were warned at the metro that the area was not safe to walk around at night, we felt perfectly safe walking to and from the metro, though we did not do this late at night. It is a short metro ride to the centre of Washington. Highly recommend hiring bikes from Thomson boat and cycle hire as a way of seeing the main sights. Do not bother with the Double Decker bus tours - they do not run frequently or regularly, nor do they keep to their scheduled route and stops. A complete waste of money and a precious days sight-seeing.

Owner's Response: This is a very safe neighborhood from the Metro stops. The area is established as a historic district. I live in the area and I find it to be as safe as any location in DC. This is the only neighborhood that I would live in DC. I love it, it is quiet and friendly.

Comfortable with character

  • 4 of 5

This property was roomy enough for our party of four adult women friends (we like each having our own bedroom, and a kitchen). TVs in every bedroom but not in the living room. Kitchen was well stocked, except no oven mitt. We had to call the owner with a few questions to get the wifi and AC controls clear, but he was immediately available. The front steps are uneven and so a little hard to navigate. The neighborhood is lovely and interesting, with lots of rowhouses and plenty of restaurants and a grocery store a short walk away. The metro station was a 10-minute walk, not bad. We enjoyed ourselves during our 5 day stay in DC. People were friendly and helpful everywhere we went!

The house was very neat and clean. The neighborhood was quiet and friendly. the walk to the Metro was a nice short walk even with younger kids. All the sights were amazing. The only downfall of our trip was we did not read street signs. We had our car ticketed and towed for street sweeping that did not even take place at a cost of 145.00 beware. The owners were very good at responding and all questions were answered. We would stay again. Thanks for a wonderful place to stay on our family vacation

Decent Place to Stay

  • 3 of 5

There are many glowing reviews of this place on VRBO. If I'm being honest, our experience was just "fine". The house itself was just large enough to accommodate our group of 15 (the listing advertises 14, but 7 of our people were kids). The master bedroom was great, and the other two were nice as well. The beds were comfortable. There is a little backyard area with a nice deck. Off-street parking with a garage was very useful as one of the people in our party had a vehicle. I Really enjoyed the neighborhood with many friendly people and cool historic buildings.

That being said, I read many reviews of how helpful the owner/caretaker was. I did not find that to be the case. In fact, I personally never met or heard from him/her during our entire stay. I tried to contact him/her to make arrival arrangements and did not hear back. It rained fairly hard one evening and water came in through the basement door, soaking some of our personal items. I reached out to the owners to let them know and never heard back.

The listing said there was a computer, and there was not one. People in our party did not bring their personal laptops banking on that. That was disappointing. Also, the remote for the garage door did not work. Usually not a big deal, but the property is enclosed, so at the end of the day, you would have to park out front, go through the house out back to the garage, open the door inside the garage, then go back through the house to the front, then drive around. The property also advertises a washing machine and a dryer on the premises. While that was true, the dryer required money to use. So, have quarters on hand if you want to dry your clothes.

In short, many aspects of the house were great, the customer service was subpar and a few of the listed amenities were not available. I would still recommend staying here as it's a nice house and the neighborhood was comfortable.

Perfect Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

The property was perfect for our family DC vacation of 9 people (5 adults and 4 children). We selected this home as it had adequate bedrooms/bathrooms for the entire family, close to the Metro, and of course, the family are all electronic geeks. The home had TVs in all of the bedrooms and WiFi covered all of the mobile devices throughout the house. We traveled in a 15 passenger van and the van was too long to fit in the garage. But Patrick, provided a street parking pass which worked out great during our 1 week stay. The children stayed in the lower level which provided isolation from the adults in the upstairs bedrooms. We adored the old style home with the creaking stairs. We knew when the children were coming up the stairs! The Shaw Metro was a short walk and we used the Metro exclusively to see the monuments and museums in the DC area. The Safeway store is a short drive and learned that there was an underground parking garage in lieu of finding street parking. When you checkout, ask for the 1.5 hr free parking voucher. The house was certainly spacious, very clean, a well-equipped kitchen, and more than enough towels/linens for the family. We enjoyed our vacation stay there in DC and definitely recommend this home.
