About Catherine and David

We have owned the Sharpsburg Cottage since 2000.

Catherine and David purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Catherine and David chose West Virginia

It is only 1 hr 15 minutes from Washington DC. It is a great get away from the hustle and bustle. You can truly relax here at the cottage. Take a nap on the hammock or unwind in the hot tub.

What makes this cottage unique

We fell in love with this property because of its location. The C&O Canal Tow Path is located just beyond our front yard. We spend time walking and biking along the path during our visits to the house. There is a small country store two doors down where you can walk and get ice cream. One of the first things we do is walk down to the river and take a dip. We are five minutes from Antietam and close to many other local attractions. We would spend every weekend in the country if we could. The cottage is fully equipped as if it were are primary residence. Our lives have become very busy so we don't get to spend as much time there as we would like, so we have decided to share our wonderful home with others. ENJOY!!

Notes:
The water is stored in a cistern and we prefer you don't drink from the faucet. It is safe for bathing and washing dishes. The water is stored in a 2,000 gallon water tank that is pumped into the house. Just like at home but water comes from the cistern tank. We provide a water cooler (cold/hot) water and 2 5 gallon bottle for supplemental drinking water.

Summer Retreat Away From It All

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have been coming to this cottage for a few years, and we love it each time. We sit out on the patios (upstairs and downstairs) and catch the cool breeze or watch bunnies and birds in the yard. Two hawks could been seen flying from the neighbor's yard on a regular basis. You can relax and get away from it all in this cottage. You can drive to the next town (less than 5 miles) to do shopping, antiquing, and dining. Nutters is very close, and we would have home made ice cream often. I recommend this cottage as it is always super clean when we arrive, has lots of pots/pans/utensils to cook with, has a bbq grill, and the yard is well manicured.

Sharpsburg is lovely but the house is creaky and buggy.

  • 1 of 5

Lots of insects were a frequent challenge. Hot tub didnt work. Washing machine doesnt work. The key box is a nightmare to maneuver. But on the up side there are some games to play eith and the yard is pretty.

Owner's Response: OWNERS BEWARE OF THIS GUY. We have rented our home since 2008 and have never had any issues. Guests love our neat and clean home. This guest, left his stinky trash inside the house, left the lights on and left our home unlocked (I couldn't get there until the following weekend). We do not advertise a washer/dryer due to the water situation. The hot tub was broken and I let him know. We just installed a beautiful new Hot Tub this weekend, it's awesome and reliable!

Wonderful cottage for adults and kids alike.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the cottage. The kids loved the tree house and swings. We cooked some meals, ate too much Nutter's ice cream and just relaxed. It was a great vacation! Thank you!

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

The place was amazing! We had a girls weekend and had the best time. The place was very clean and lots of amenities provided. Kitchen items, Games to play, bikes to ride etc. The hot tub was awesome! Very homey feel to the place. The house is far enough out that it was peaceful yet close to town. We walked the trail along the river which is right across the street. We ventured into the next town only a few minutes away and did some shopping. Lovely little town. I will definitely be back with my family and for another girls weekend. Catherine was great at responding to any questions as well.

Quiet vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

This was a great little getaway spot. The house itself is very comfortable, with a large living area and well-equipped kitchen. Both bedrooms were nice, although the downstairs bedroom is primarily for kids (which we have). The deck and hot tub were highlights, and the downstairs patio and fire pit area were also very nice, with tables and seating. The best part of the house was the location- close to us from DC, but incredibly quiet and tranquil, with beautiful views of the Potomac, and right across the street from the C&O canal. I would recommend this place, and we'll likely be back!

Shepherdstown stay

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our weekend stay even in early December. The house was very comfortable, clean and as described. We are considering coming back in the spring when we can use the canal trail on our bikes and enjoy the river.
