About Matthew B. Miller

I moved to Salida, CO in 2003 to raft guide on the Arkansas River with Independent Whitewater after guiding in Alaska, West Virginia, and Texas. I worked for the Guest Services Department at Monarch Mountain that winter. I quickly fell in love with the mountains, rivers, and people in the Arkansas River Valley. I now enjoy being the Manager of Guest Services, skiing, mountain biking, hiking, camping, and am still guiding local rivers.

Matthew B. Miller purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Matthew B. Miller chose South Central Colorado

I bought the Snowshoe Inn because it's as close as you can get to Monarch Mountain and because the owner, builder, and friend who previously owned it was willing to owner finance me. It's hard to get a home loan as a raft guide/ski bum!

What makes this cabin unique

The hand crafted Snowshoe Inn has a cozy, welcoming feel to it. It was built in 1977 with 130 year old barn wood interior from a local ranch and has hand hewn timbers from the local Lilly Mine which mined gold and silver in the 1800s. With wooden skis from the 1940s, a small library of outdoor adventure, ski, and travel books from the 1960s on, old sleds, snowshoes, ice skates, and historic Monarch photos it's like a little museum of Monarch, ski, and winter sports nostalgia.

Needs some attention

  • 3 of 5

The house is a classic and is quite cozy but it could use maintenance. It took us about 5 minutes to get the front door open as the door knob is loose and/or sticking and although the lock seemed to release it wouldn't open - it was a problem every time we went in or out and I assume at some point it will fail completely. The storm door is also about ready to pull completely away from the house. The other concern was the kitchen faucet which leaked really badly when in use and slowly all the time - in getting a trash bag out from underneath it was also dripping slowly from the supply lines - numerous buckets underneath and a recent caulk job around the faucet made it clear the owner was aware but didn't see the need to repair it. The other issue we had involved communication and access. Although the seller mentioned discount lift tickets, when I inquired about them I got no reply, another inquiry went unanswered as well. The final problem was the access... we did have a 4 wheel drive and are experience winter drivers but the location of the house seems to be a bit of a ghost town. The road was plowed when we arrived (they hadn't had snow in a week) but the driveway is on an incline and was a sheet of ice - not pleasant when trying to unload ski gear. Overnight on our second day we got about a foot of snow - fantastic news for skiers - except the town plow didn't show up until after 11am and the main access into town actually gets plowed in by the Highway 50 plows... so if you could get out on an icy road with a foot of snow, you met a wall of snow at the intersection to highway 50 - our neighboring renters made a brave but failed attempt to get out but only succeeded in getting stuck and only got out after a lot of shoveling and still needed the local plow. When I called to ask the owner (around 9 am) if the house/ town gets plowed he said we were pretty low on the list and they'd get to it eventually... I realize that 12" is a lot of snow, but this house is on a mountain pass and it can't be that uncommon. If we had known getting in and out would be an issue we never would have stayed here.

Owner's Response: I'm so sorry your experience wasn't a great one during your stay. I replaced the door knob which used to take a little jiggle to get open, but had gotten worse fast, sorry it was such a pain. I discovered the leaky sink while cleaning the day before you checked in and have replaced that too. As far as the snow, which we love, a few times a winter it piles up fast enough to cause problems getting in and out, but is uncommon. When you asked about the plowing I didn't mean to sound unconcerned by saying Monarch is low on the list. I meant that when Salida gets snow they plow that first and then make it Monarch, and since Salida didn't get snow that day I was hoping the plows would get there quicker. I think the bad timing of a couple maintenance issues at the cabin and a lot of new snow combined with the stress of your injury at the mountain made for a rough stay. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

The property was very cool. We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the access to incredible winter activities! The snow was awesome during the stay and the cabin offered a comfortable reprieve during those times we weren't out enjoying ourselves. Thank you Miller for being available and giving us a wonderful place to stay!

Best cabin for Monarch for sure

  • 4 of 5

My family used to stay in this cabin years and years ago and not much has changed which is great! It's definitely the best cabin in the area for a family trip.

The housekeeping could have been a tad better... There was an old bag of trash sitting outside the back door; the coffee pot had rotting grounds in it and had to be totally scrubbed before we could use it; dog poop all over outside; spider webs everywhere...

Overall we love the place and plan to make it a yearly tradition.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the heads up Kellie. I don't have a regular cleaning person anymore and am sorry the Snowshoe Inn wasn't spruced up nicer. I'm glad you said you'd still come back! I'll make sure the cabin is ready for you next time. Sincerely, Miller.

Just what we needed

  • 5 of 5

The Snowshoe Inn was perfect for our family get together. We had ample space for everyone (10 and 1 pup) to eat, sleep and reacquaint. My son cooked gourmet meals for 10 in the kitchen as the rest of us talked and watched classic movies. The location near Monarch Ski Resort (5 minutes) sealed the deal this year and our experience will bring us back.

Repeat customer--wonderful cabin for family and groups!

  • 5 of 5

My family of 6 (4 kids) have been visiting the Snowshoe Inn for the past several years-- I think 4 years now and loving it! We usually come for 4-5 days during the Christmas holiday or for Spring skiing. We've brought up to 10 people (lots of kids) for birthday events and ski trips and it's so convenient...5 minutes to Monarch...and Salida is just down the road with great shops, food and entertainment. The sleeping arrangements are perfect for my kids with a private bedroom for my husband and I. The kitchen is great for family meals and saving on eating out. It's also great because we can bring our well-behaved dogs and there's no worry about leaving anyone behind. We will continue to visit this terrific vacation cabin and our favorite ski area, Monarch.

Thanks Miller!!
