Why Caryn Vinson chose Downeast and Acadia

The Cottage has many unique features, among them being its age, location and history. The cottage was probably built in the late 1800's or early 1900's as a single family home. Over the years it has served as a workshop and rental property and was renovated about 20 years ago. Many of the original features were left untouched, such as the staircase and pitched roof.

The Cottage sits up on a bluff overlooking Shackford Cove (sometimes referred to as Houston's Cove in the histories), giving an excellent view of Canada and the Bay. Visitors frequently spot whales, seals, eagles, a wide variety of local birds, and herds of local deer while enjoying the broad deck.

Eastport is a unique historical attraction with many restored and protected commercial and residential properties. The July 4th and Salmon Festival events attract hundreds of participants from the region and from 'away.' Eastport is also a center for the arts in the region boasting many fine artists and galleries, as well as an arts center with regular performance throughout the year.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy providing visitors with advice on eating spots, ferries, parks, birding, dog trails and Canadian destinations. Visitors frequently find us enjoying a morning coffee or an afternoon cocktail on our deck with our two dogs, Ginger and Bailey.

The cottage is quiet and serene while remaining within walking distance of shops, restaurants and other entertainment.

reflective, restorative time

  • 5 of 5

As I sit here, looking out over Shackford Cove from the cottage, I am reminded again what an idyllic place this is for recouping and restoring oneself. It is truly a place apart. Just a few minutes ago, we watched a minke whale breach over and over just outside the cove where there must be ample feeding due to the tremendous tidal action. There aren't a lot of places you can whale-watch from your deck, but here it is common. Tourists say "Look! It's a whale!" Locals say "Yawp, that's Ted." The mackerel fishing here is also amazing, just on the breakwater at the edge of town. The owners, Jim and Colleen, although not locals by birth, can tell you where to go for good food, souvenirs, scenery and activities, much of it only a block or two away. Hike through Shackford Head park, take the ferry to Campobello and see FDR's summer cottage, take the passenger ferry to Lubec for lunch and more local art, perhaps seeing more whales, seals and porpoises along the way. Mostly, just relax in the peaceful atmosphere that is Eastport and the authentic downeast feel of the Cottage.

Memorable Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The week I spent at the cottage was quiet, interesting, filled with natural sites and artistic interest of Eastport. Walking paths flank the village and downtown is minutes away on foot. Excellent music and food are available at the local restaurants and the neighbors are pleasant and friendly. The cottage is well-suited to a private retreat or small family get-away. Everything I needed was already there, so I was prepared to host the owners one nite. Nice views and small adventures surround Eastport. I highly recommend this rental.

The View

  • 5 of 5

The description and pictures of the property almost do it justice, perched on a tidal bluff, just a short walk to town, this place is hard to beat for it's view. Life is very laid back in Eastport, so leave your cares at home and enjoy this very well-maintained property. Check out the Iris Cafe for a great breakfast and the Chowder House at the other end of town for excellent lobster and clams. The owner, Meg, is extremely helpful and knowledgable of the area and draws great maps. This area is unique for its extreme tidal changes,,,nothing like it.

Downeast Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Nicely renovated and comfortable old house right on the water. The house is very clean and the kitchen is well equipped (2 lobster pots!). Watch the tide go in and out from the deck or through the large windows. We saw lots of lobster boats, some kayaks and sailboats. The cottage is a 2 minute walk from the fishmonger's and 5 to the village. We took the ferries to Deer island and Campobello island (F.D. Roosevelt summer cottage, hiking trails, lighthouses) and there are whale watching and fishing tours offered in the village. The description is accurate.

This remote portion of Maine is called the Sunrise Coast because the region is first in America to see the morning sun. Eastport is an artist's colony located on Moose Island and easily accessible by a causeway to the mainland. Look across the bay at Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's summer home. Other historic sites to visit are the Burnham Tavern in Machias and the Ruggles House in Columbia Falls. Not to be missed are East Quoddy Head Light on Campobello and West Quoddy Head Light in Lubec.
