Casa Azul is in the small village of Esperanza, on Vieques’ Caribbean side, the island’s most popular destination. The Malecon, Esperanza’s waterfront with its restaurants, bars and shops, is a short walk away and there are several small grocery stores that are within walking distance as well. Sun Bay, a large, picturesque beach which is often deserted, is a five minute drive from the house.
Casa Azul is located near the end of a dead end street, beyond which are acres of undeveloped land. Horses—both tame and wild—walk past at all hours. The house has large tiled patios in front and back, which are ideal for coffee in the morning and for listening to the tree frogs at night. The yard, with its decorative wall and lush tropical landscaping, offers plenty of privacy. Private driveway and fully-stocked kitchen. The house has a good supply of beach towels, coolers, etc.
Our property manager will meet you when you arrive and will be available during your stay to answer questions, orient you to the island, and give you tips on what to see and where to go.
This is a very nice home, nicest in the area, very convenient to all the restaurants, night life and beaches. Our property manager, Jay Thomas, was very helpful and gave us great places to visit. The home had all the things we needed, beach towels, chairs, cooler, etc. the owners/host are wonderful people and very quick to answer questions and everything was smooth making a fantastic family vacation
This place is the perfect getaway for families and couples, young and old. Our little boys loved all the wild animals and we loved the closeness to the beach as we didn't have a car the first couple days. The house is a stones throw from everything in Esperanza and several of the nicer beaches are in walking distance but having a car does make exploring the tiny island easier as the hills can be steep and the roads unsafe. Perfect place to get away from it all.
The owners, Anne and Joe, were great. This was my first time renting a home for a vacation and was a bit nervous trusting a stranger but I could tell off the bat I was in good hands. They returned emails and phone calls quickly.
The house managers, Mimi and Popp were wonderful. We communicated with ease by email prior to our arrival and by phone, text and, of course, in-person once we arrived. Popp gave us a great introduction to the island including restaurant, beach and activity recommendations, I won't go over everything he touched upon but it was thorough. He made it clear that that we were to contact him or Mimi if we had any questions or concerns and that they were always available.
The house was just as described. My family and I loved the outdoor spaces and would read and people watch (not there were a lot of people walking by. It was mostly horses) on the front porch and grilled out and relaxed in the shade on the back porch. There is a gated driveway but we always just parked on the street. The house had everything we needed for our many trips to the beaches. Towels, umbrella, coolers of various sizes made our days at the pristine beaches (Media Luna was our favorite) very comfortable. The bedrooms were air conditioned and nice cross breezes kept us cool during the days. I liked that the kitchen and living area were open to each other and the kitchen island was a great place to plot out our day.
As far as safety goes, Popp will go over everything with you but I can honestly say I never felt unsafe. Don't leave your common sense at home. I really did nothing here that I didn't already do at home (lock the doors, don't leave valuables on the beach etc.)The neighborhood looked different than mine but was filled with friendly locals and visitors. When I walked to the bakery alone I was greeted with smiles and nods along the way.
My husband, our 4 year old and I were there for 10 days and filled them with trips to the beach, Sugar Mill ruins, malecon (lots of restaurants, shops, beautiful views), Isabel II, Bio Bay, Mosquito Pier, eating at the food trucks and Smokey's,sea glass treasure hunting among other things. The island is a special place and Esperanza is a gem on the island and this home is a perfect temporary home.
We really enjoyed staying at the property. The Malecon ("downtown" Esperanza has 8 bars and a small beach) is a 20 minute walk away through residental streets where there are stray dogs and sometimes horses, so just be aware of that. We walked to the Malecon almost every day and back, and enjoyed it. The bakery and grocery store that Joe recommends is also close to the Malecon, since there are no large supermarkets nearby. The property did not have internet when we stayed; you must go to Malecon and try to get wifi passwords from bars.
The house was well equipped and had many kitchen utensils and pots, since we cooked a lot. Also, there were many beach supplies (beach chairs, towels, hats, coolers).
Vieques has some beautiful beaches and we tried to visit a new one every day. Having a car definitely helps, as you can visit multiple beaches in a day. However, we have been told that you can take a taxi for $20 roundtrip to some of the beaches on the southern part of Vieques to avoid renting a car.
A tour of the bioluminescent bay is a MUST - it was truly an unforgettable experience.
Enjoy your stay at Vieques; we can't wait to come back.
I have stayed at Casa Azul in Esperanza on multiple occasions for it's perfect location in Vieques. This cute home provides all the privacy needed from the healthy vibrant tropical garden inside the decorative walled property. The screened and louvered glass windows and doors allow the radiant Caribbean light to flow into the home making it a cheery place to rejuvenate one's spirit. The property manager couple are so passionate about the island. It reflects in the service they provide starting with meeting you at the airport and helping you get to the car rental place and or Casa Azul. Thus "no worries" while here! The beaches are so serene, natural and so uncrowded one often feels one has the whole beach to oneself. There are at least 8 Caribbean beaches to explore, some with coral reefs for snorkeling! Kayaking off the Malecon shoreline is also great fun. The evening sunsets are spectacular along the Malecon. After sundown, back at the house your ears will be serenaded by the sweet sounds of the native unseen tree frogs. Regarding the amenities, the TV is only a monitor for movie rental viewing. All other amenities are clean and meet expectations. I stay each time for a week & feel thoroughly renewed from my experience at Casa Azul.
We (2 couples) rented this adorable house for 3 nights and wished we could've stayed longer. The location was perfect--just a short walk to the Malecon but with the neighborhood so we felt like locals and did not have to endure the business or noise of where all the hotels are located. The house is well taken care of and the property manager, Joe could not have been more helpful! I would warn people to make sure to shut windows and run the AC or a fan at night since the neighborhood noise of roosters and cars/trucks is quite jarring. But once we took care of the windows we slept just fine and it was still so worth it. We will definitely go back and would recommend this house to anyone!
