A romantic cottage retreat in a colorful Sonoma country setting that is close to the Sonoma Square by 1 mile. Tropical gardens, quiet, relaxing, colorful and one-of-a-kind. It is an experience to be remembered.
You will feel transformed to another era as you step into the sheltered walls of the 2 acre adobe compound and surrounded by 6 more.
The Hacienda was built by our own blood, sweat, and joy. Once you walk through the arched wall you are transformed to another place. We are told by people who walk through the gates that they feel like they are in the south of France, Italy, or Mexico. Our neighbors said it looks like an Italian villa.
The view of the grounds is full of tropical plants and colors. There are lush gardens and pathways to roam on and enjoy the lavender or sunflowers that are a hit each year when they bloom. You can dine under the oak tree or relax in the evening by the fire pit!
There are several places to hang out, eat, or play on the three lawn acres within the walls. However, your 1 bedroom cottage has its own private outdoor eating area and two patios to sit in, barbecue, or dine out under the old oak tree lit by an artistic chandelier at night. Sometimes our guests join us outside to eat and drink the many delicious wines from our hometown.
The sunsets are heavenly as the light changes to a warm golden hue that is so beautiful that you try to absorb every moment with your eyes or a camera.
In the summer you can help harvest the lavender or pick a bouquet of wildflowers or giant sunflowers and there is an organic vegetable garden that you are welcome to gather from.
We are only a little over a mile from the Sonoma square and you can easily see the fireworks from our lavender field.
The main house and grounds are available for events of all kinds.
The Casita has thick plastered walls with rich colors reminiscent of old Europe and a fireplace to get cozy by. The floors are all heated and the 3 rooms are built with old beams and vaulted ceilings.
The Casita has a sitting room, bathroom, and bedroom - all separate rooms from one another.
The walls are made from a green product and are 12 inches thick, so it stays warm at night yet cool on hot days and very quiet at nights.
Old and new come together: there are heated floors, French doors in both rooms that overlook the garden, European fixtures, large Mexican tile shower for two with a window that opens to red geraniums and wisteria.
The shower is open, private, and built for 2 with a window to view the garden. If you so inclined, there is a rustic outdoor bamboo-enclosed shower that is fabulous on a starry or full moon night.

The Hacienda was designed and built by Roger Hartley, a construction engineer. He was inspired by the secret walls he would pass by on the streets of Spain and Italy. Upon entering our gate you will be transported into another world, with fountains flowing, colorful gardens and birds of all kinds coming to nest in the red clay tiles. He planted 180 lavender plants that line the back of two acres and in July when it blooms we are truly in paradise. In the beginning when it was just a field of mud and a frame for the casita I came along and a romance was born. I started with just cuttings from a previous home and the garden started breathing. So over a four year period we inspired one another with our love for color, texture and form. We lived in the casita from the moment the walls were plastered. No toilet, no shower, no kitchen, but wow, was it fun. Our beautiful main house has been built and more walls to come and even a pool. It is a never ending creative process that we love sharing with our friends and family.
cena Jane and Roger Hartley purchased this cottage in 2004
What is unique about our property is the feeling of being far from the town yet very close to everything. I have arranged sitting areas all over the property to enjoy the passing of the day with the sun. They are like rooms in a house painted with plants. If you are a bird watcher, this is the place, especially in the spring. There is a photo op at every turn and some textural foliage to admire. We are always creating something new for La Vida Hacienda.
We are told by people who walk through the gate that they feel like they are in the south of France ,Italy or Mexico. Our neighbors said it looks like an Italian villa. The casita has it's own outdoor eating area and two patios to sit in. The light at the end of the day is filled with a golden color that you try to absorb every moment with your eyes or a camera. Every year we plant giant sunflowers that create a livey happy wall around us. If you miss your pets we have a few of them also. Play ball with Poochini the pooch or enjoy Frisbee on the lawn.
Only such a beautiful couple could reate such a beautiful place! We'll never forget this experience. Hope to return to do it again.
Hacienda de Amor was an experience of beauty, comfort and inspiration. We found all aspects of our stay to be nothing less than perfect! Cena, Roger and Poocini are the perfect hosts and share their artistic landscape of love with generosity and grace.
It is a wonder that we found this special spot on the earth and we hope to return someday and stay connected in spirit until then..
I loved staying at La Casita--the architecture, garden, artwork and many beautiful details all made it feel like a real hacienda. I would recommend this place to anyone.
We had a great stay at the casita as an anniversary trip. We received a warm greeting from Poochini and Roger upon arrival and had a very relaxing week.
The house is beautifully built with French doors and nice wood-frame windows ... the construction keeps the inside cool on hot days and allows for some great breezes to come through. Opening the doors also gives you a great view of the garden.
The patio is the perfect place to sit in the morning with some coffee (coffee maker, coffee, cream, and sugar were provided!) or at night sipping some wine while the sun sets. And on hot days it provides a cool shady spot to relax. There's plenty of lighting at the larger outdoor table for sitting outside at night.
In terms of location, you can drive to Sonoma Plaza in about 5 minutes, and access lots of wineries with easy access to main roads like Rt 12, 116, and 121.
Overall - if you're looking for a quiet, relaxing place to stay in Sonoma, we definitely recommend this one!
We love this place. We actually want to scare people away from here, and write a negative review so my wife and I can have this slice of heaven ALL to ourselves! But that would not be fair . So, all we canszy is if ever look at this place on VRBO and are not sure about booking a stay here even after looking at all the pictures and great reviews--stopand go no further in your search for a "nice" place. You will not be disappointed in any way. In fact, like us, you will have wished to stay longer! The owners, Roger and Cena and (poochini), a very friendly orange cat, the immaculate grounds are are all you need to relax and unwind. The weather here in September was perfect too, but evenif it was not, it wouldn't matter because you are transpoted to a different place. A place you will no doubt cherish and come back to. I have never been to heaven or Italy, but you don't haveto. All you need to do is stay here and you will be there! We are coming back without a doubt and I encourage all to do the same and look no further then this magical place in Sonoma called La Casita or Hacienda De Amor.
We stayed here for our first visit to Sonoma and Napa and had a wonderful experience. Cena and Roger are wonderful hosts and the property is just spectacular....we enjoyed our visit so much that we extended our stay by a day and were so sad to leave. The casita is magical and we felt as though we were in another world.
We are animal lovers and Poochini and Mona Lisa, as well as the little black cat, were welcome visitors every morning while we enjoyed our coffee. We will definitely be back!!
Absolute perfection in every way!! Linda & Joe
My friend and I stayed here for a girls' weekend and it was so beautiful it absolutely blew our minds. Everything was perfect! As you can see the photos are stunning, but it was actually even more beautiful than any photo can capture. Everywhere you look is a cute little nook where you can eat a healthy California lunch or curl up with a book. Cena and Roger are on the property in another building and were fantastic hosts. They didn't try to intrude on our stay but did invite us to have a glass of wine with them. We took them up on their offer and they were really great company. Very down to earth and thoughtful people.
We rented some bicycles and did the self-guided wine tasting tour, which was so much fun! The tasting rooms that we visited offered two for one tastings for those on the bike tour so the bike rentals paid for themselves. What a thrill to ride through the vineyards on bikes! We did have a car, but the location of the casita is within walking distance of downtown. Not a short walk, but definitely doable. A couple of times we left the car and took uber so that we didn't need to be concerned about drinking while driving.
There are some great restaurants in town, and we had a nice dinner at the Girl and the Fig, but Cena and Roger let us use their grill and we enjoyed grilling some wonderful local veggies and steaks from the local supermarket.
We highly recommend the cottage and have no complaints whatsoever except for the fact that we had to leave. ;) We will be coming back! Thanks Cena and Roger (and Poochini).
We are located in the county just next to the city limits. We are only a mile and half from the square. There is a bike trail to the square and can be rented.
The best thing about our property is there is a lot of it and you feel like you are in another country. It's a beautiful and relaxing place to hang out.
