Arashiyama House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 3)

The Arashiyama Hanare was registered as a ''Important Cultural Properties of Kyoto'' . The Arashiyama Hanare is a traditional Japanese 'Machiya' is located in scenic Arashiyama, on the west side of Kyoto. The train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is from there it's 10-15 minutes to Kyoto Station. Arashiyama is a popular tourist destination in Kyoto, with it's beautiful scenery, the Hozu and Katsura Rivers with it's romantic 'Moon-Crossing Bridge' (8 minute walk),the bamboo grove and the Monkey Park.

The UNESCO World Heritage listed Tenryuji Temple is an 8 minute walk away. Other temples are such as Daikakuji temple(It was the villeage for the emperor), Seiryoji temple, Adashino Nenbutsuji temple, Jojakkoji temple, Nisonin temple and Rokuoin temple etc, which are possible to visit from the Arashiyama Hanare by walk.

Other sights are very easily reached by the Randen line train, such as Ninnaji Temple, Ryoanji Temple, Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) and Saihoji (Moss Temple.) Other nearby tourist attractions include the Saga 'Romantic Train' old-fashioned diesel train which winds through the hills, as well as boat rental and white-water rafting, not to mention hiking, all located nearby.

Out side of Kyoto, it is very easy to access other popular tourist spots such as Nara, Uji, Osaka, Himeji, Hiroshima etc by JR train since the JR train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is five minutes walk away. A natural 'onsen' hot spring (entrance fee just ¥1000) is just a 15 minute walk away.

The Arashiyama Hanare was built on before 1935, and was completely restored in November 2008-2011. The restoration was a labor of love, requiring the participation of artisans specializing in traditional carpentry techniques, and using natural materials in all areas both inside and out. Great efforts were made to recreate an atmosphere which will allow guests to experience the traditional way of living. An added modern touch for comfort is the luxurious bathing area and bathroom...where you can soak in the oversized tub while gazing at the Zen garden, after a full day of sightseeing.

The Arashiyama Hanare is just behind the main house, but has an independent entrance and accommodation are completely separated. The total space is 55 square meters. Near the entrance is the original old Japanese style kitchen which has basic facilities for cooking. The floor of the kitchen is made of 'tataki,' a traditional mixture of 'shikkui' and soil. There are two tatami rooms, one 3 mats, and the other 6 mats. Two to three guests can be accommodated on futons, which can be placed on the floor of either room.

The Arashiyama Hanare shares a 'Zen garden' called Nakaniwa, with the main house. The owners live in the main house. Owners speak English, and are happy to provide assistance during the stay. One of the owners is an 'Ikebana' master, and flower arrangements will welcome guests upon arrival.

There's easy access to all of the sightseeing spots in central Kyoto. The train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is five minutes walk away, and from there it's 10-15 minutes to Kyoto Station. Another train station 'Randen Saga' is three minutes walk away.

The Arashiyama Hanare offers an opportunity to experience Kyoto life in a very special part of the city, living in a typical Kyoto silent neighborhood.

In the days when the ancient capital was located in Nara, Arashiyama was known as a pleasure resort for the Emperor and his court people. Since then, it has always attracted people with it's scenic beauty and seasonal colors, particularly the cherry blossoms of the Spring, and the changing leaves of the Autumn.

You can spend your personal time in this space where the Arashiyama Hanare is intimate.

October Stay

I would highly recommend Arashiyama Hanare for a couple visiting Kyoto. The location is great. Close to a JR station and also the Randan tram, so it is very easy to get to the many places worth visiting in Kyoto as well as walking distance to the Arashiyama sights. The house itself is very authentic & really adds a nice dimension to a Kyoto visit. If you meet Tokuji & his wife, they are charming hosts and can assist with any questions you might have.

Hello everyone,

This was actually my second time staying at the Arashiyama Hanare house in Kyoto, Japan.

I previously stayed here in 2010 with my family. It's a great place! I recommended it to my brother

this September when he was touring Japan. The Hanare house is located on a quiet, lovely street tucked away in a charming Japanese neighborhood close to the station. Not only do you have plenty of personal space, they provide you with a lot of cooking ware and so it's easy to cook a good meal on days you feel like saving some cash. Of course there is also that distinct smell of bamboo and soil. Tatami mats have a relaxing odor and create a stunning atmosphere. I highly recommend staying here if you are passionate about Kyoto and Japan. Even the streets surrounding it are full of old book sellers, farmers, and craftsmen, etc. You are right by the bamboo forest and Monkey Park is within a walks reach. It's a must for me!

Traditional House in central position.

  • 4 of 5

This house is well situated in a quiet district of Arishiyama ,but is also very near shops, stations and tourist attractions. It is well equipped but we found the step up between kitchen and living areas rather high. Tanaka-san provided a small step to help make this easier and intends to get something more permanent for less able visitors.. He also provided two chairs to be more comfortable for us rather than always sitting on the cushions on the floor.

We found the breakfast bar in the kitchen a great help. The house was scrupulously clean and looked onto a small garden between it and the owner's. Tanaka-san was very friendly and spoke excellent English .

Excellent accommodation, great location and friendly owner in fabulous area of Kyoto

  • 5 of 5

'We spent ten days at Arashiyama Hanare House over Christmas and New Year and really enjoyed the experience. The house is perfect and exactly as described on the website. The experience of staying in Arishiyama is great for anyone with more than a few days in Kyoto or wishing to have a unique experience outside of the main tourist areas. We used the location to explore the local area more thoroughly and also made many trips to both Kyoto downtown and shopping trips to Osaka (only 30-40 min away. Tokuji Tanaka-san was a wonderful host and provided some information on the local area. He also made advance bookings to visit some special temples for us (see website). Overall, I would highly recommend Arashiyama Hanare House as a wonderful place to stay.

A truly authentic experience in Arashiyama

  • 5 of 5

My Mum and myself have just returned from our three weeks trip to Japan. We spent four days in Kyoto, staying in the wonderful Arashiyama Hanare house, which completely lived up to our expectations (and as frequent travellers we have high ones!). Tanaka-san was very efficient, responsive and helpful throughout the booking stage. He kindly helped us with some restaurant reservations for dinners in Kyoto (as we don't speak Japanese, it may get a bit tricky). He also had his own wonderful suggestions about the restaurants.

When we arrived to Kyoto station, the house was easy to reach - Tanaka-san gave us directions in advance. Even though the house is not in central Kyoto, it only takes 10-15 minutes (depending on the type of the train) from Kyoto station and then another 5 minutes to walk. Arashiyama is a beautiful part of Kyoto with so much to explore and we very much appreciated being able to come back to a quiet area after having spent the day in a busy city.

The house (as you can see already in the pictures) will give you a very unique and authentic experience. If you're looking for the Western style accommodation, clearly this is not the place, but for those wishing to experience something different and unforgettable, Hanare house is perfect.

We were very happy with our stay in Arashiyama Hanare and if we are back in Kyoto one day, we would love to stay there again. Highly recommended!

Quiet retreat in Kyoto

  • 4 of 5

We rented this house for a week in Kyoto and truly enjoyed the quiet and peaceful atmosphere. When we arrived we were a bit shocked with the kitchen. It is quite basic, dark and stark, it doesn't make you want to cook a meal and eat in. It just meant that we had to eat out all the time which made the days that much longer since we couldn't really come back and relax, there is no furniture, no chairs or couches. Be aware also that in this part of town all the shops and almost all the restaurants close around 5 or 6pm. So after a few days we decided to go back to Kyoto in the evening for supper which meant coming back even later after a long day of walking. We were told not to rest the mattresses against the walls so the only option was to lie down or sit on the floor (which was quite difficult for my husband who is over 6 feet tall). We stayed maybe a few days too long, we were there to visit and not really to relax and would have preferred somewhere we could just come back to and rest so we could recharge for another day of walking and sightseeing. It was very different than anything we have tried before and enjoyed it a lot nevertheless. I can't imagine bringing young children there it is better suited to couples that want the quiet zen experience.

Natural Hot Springs located 15 minutes' walk away, entry ¥1000 per person.

There is a traditional public bath. They burn the natural wood for heating a bath not using gas and oil.

You will feel hotly a bit. It is just 2 min walk away.
