The Arashiyama Hanare was registered as a ''Important Cultural Properties of Kyoto'' . The Arashiyama Hanare is a traditional Japanese 'Machiya' is located in scenic Arashiyama, on the west side of Kyoto. The train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is from there it's 10-15 minutes to Kyoto Station. Arashiyama is a popular tourist destination in Kyoto, with it's beautiful scenery, the Hozu and Katsura Rivers with it's romantic 'Moon-Crossing Bridge' (8 minute walk),the bamboo grove and the Monkey Park.
The UNESCO World Heritage listed Tenryuji Temple is an 8 minute walk away. Other temples are such as Daikakuji temple(It was the villeage for the emperor), Seiryoji temple, Adashino Nenbutsuji temple, Jojakkoji temple, Nisonin temple and Rokuoin temple etc, which are possible to visit from the Arashiyama Hanare by walk.
Other sights are very easily reached by the Randen line train, such as Ninnaji Temple, Ryoanji Temple, Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) and Saihoji (Moss Temple.) Other nearby tourist attractions include the Saga 'Romantic Train' old-fashioned diesel train which winds through the hills, as well as boat rental and white-water rafting, not to mention hiking, all located nearby.
Out side of Kyoto, it is very easy to access other popular tourist spots such as Nara, Uji, Osaka, Himeji, Hiroshima etc by JR train since the JR train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is five minutes walk away. A natural 'onsen' hot spring (entrance fee just ¥1000) is just a 15 minute walk away.
The Arashiyama Hanare was built on before 1935, and was completely restored in November 2008-2011. The restoration was a labor of love, requiring the participation of artisans specializing in traditional carpentry techniques, and using natural materials in all areas both inside and out. Great efforts were made to recreate an atmosphere which will allow guests to experience the traditional way of living. An added modern touch for comfort is the luxurious bathing area and bathroom...where you can soak in the oversized tub while gazing at the Zen garden, after a full day of sightseeing.
The Arashiyama Hanare is just behind the main house, but has an independent entrance and accommodation are completely separated. The total space is 55 square meters. Near the entrance is the original old Japanese style kitchen which has basic facilities for cooking. The floor of the kitchen is made of 'tataki,' a traditional mixture of 'shikkui' and soil. There are two tatami rooms, one 3 mats, and the other 6 mats. Two to three guests can be accommodated on futons, which can be placed on the floor of either room.
The Arashiyama Hanare shares a 'Zen garden' called Nakaniwa, with the main house. The owners live in the main house. Owners speak English, and are happy to provide assistance during the stay. One of the owners is an 'Ikebana' master, and flower arrangements will welcome guests upon arrival.
There's easy access to all of the sightseeing spots in central Kyoto. The train station (JR Saga Arashiyama Station) is five minutes walk away, and from there it's 10-15 minutes to Kyoto Station. Another train station 'Randen Saga' is three minutes walk away.
The Arashiyama Hanare offers an opportunity to experience Kyoto life in a very special part of the city, living in a typical Kyoto silent neighborhood.
In the days when the ancient capital was located in Nara, Arashiyama was known as a pleasure resort for the Emperor and his court people. Since then, it has always attracted people with it's scenic beauty and seasonal colors, particularly the cherry blossoms of the Spring, and the changing leaves of the Autumn.
You can spend your personal time in this space where the Arashiyama Hanare is intimate.

We arrived in Kyoto to this house as our first experience of traditional Japan.
As an architect and artist this approach suited us perfectly. We had ten days to acclimatise ourselves here at the Hanare House. How to manage getting around to all we wanted to see? With the help of the host family we learned to the live in the house, the community and district. From here we discovered many local sites of exceptional beauty. Even an accidental turn in our street found us in an amazing garden and temple. From here our greater experience of old world Kyoto and its place in the present was like an unfolding of screens. It was a slow revelation.
We thoroughly recommend staying here at the Hanare House and will send anyone who want to begin to discover the essence of an earlier Japan.
This was our second stay at the Arashiyama Hanare and it was just as wonderful as our first. For those who have not visited Kyoto or even Japan altogether, it would be a blessing and a very rare opportunity to be able to experience Japan first hand living in a place so richly infused with old Japanese tradition and culture. The rental is truly an exceptional place and the owners are very helpful and accommodating. I would definitely recommend this property to couples as well as small families.
I would highly recommend Arashiyama Hanare for a couple visiting Kyoto. The location is great. Close to a JR station and also the Randan tram, so it is very easy to get to the many places worth visiting in Kyoto as well as walking distance to the Arashiyama sights. The house itself is very authentic & really adds a nice dimension to a Kyoto visit. If you meet Tokuji & his wife, they are charming hosts and can assist with any questions you might have.
This was actually my second time staying at the Arashiyama Hanare house in Kyoto, Japan.
I previously stayed here in 2010 with my family. It's a great place! I recommended it to my brother
this September when he was touring Japan. The Hanare house is located on a quiet, lovely street tucked away in a charming Japanese neighborhood close to the station. Not only do you have plenty of personal space, they provide you with a lot of cooking ware and so it's easy to cook a good meal on days you feel like saving some cash. Of course there is also that distinct smell of bamboo and soil. Tatami mats have a relaxing odor and create a stunning atmosphere. I highly recommend staying here if you are passionate about Kyoto and Japan. Even the streets surrounding it are full of old book sellers, farmers, and craftsmen, etc. You are right by the bamboo forest and Monkey Park is within a walks reach. It's a must for me!
This house is well situated in a quiet district of Arishiyama ,but is also very near shops, stations and tourist attractions. It is well equipped but we found the step up between kitchen and living areas rather high. Tanaka-san provided a small step to help make this easier and intends to get something more permanent for less able visitors.. He also provided two chairs to be more comfortable for us rather than always sitting on the cushions on the floor.
We found the breakfast bar in the kitchen a great help. The house was scrupulously clean and looked onto a small garden between it and the owner's. Tanaka-san was very friendly and spoke excellent English .
'We spent ten days at Arashiyama Hanare House over Christmas and New Year and really enjoyed the experience. The house is perfect and exactly as described on the website. The experience of staying in Arishiyama is great for anyone with more than a few days in Kyoto or wishing to have a unique experience outside of the main tourist areas. We used the location to explore the local area more thoroughly and also made many trips to both Kyoto downtown and shopping trips to Osaka (only 30-40 min away. Tokuji Tanaka-san was a wonderful host and provided some information on the local area. He also made advance bookings to visit some special temples for us (see website). Overall, I would highly recommend Arashiyama Hanare House as a wonderful place to stay.
