Lovingly preserved and restored, this rustic beauty sparkles! Architecture is reminiscent of Yosemite's Ahwahnee Hotel, with high ceilings, stripped redwood beams, and 4 river rock fireplaces. This storybook cabin was built in 1930 by Pebble Beach residents, Grace and Paul Veeder to welcome their guests to sunny Carmel Valley, away from Pebble Beach's fog.

Exquisite kitchen, 2 quaint bathrooms (pedestal tub/shower in the guest suite and a candlelit fireplace shower in the master suite) with custom furnishings throughout. Careful preservation and upgrades adorn this historic treasure.

About MaryJane Caputo-Walters

The Families Dad, Tim, worked very hard to update The Ranch House in 2007 to its present beautiful guest-ready condition. We think Great-Grands Paul and Grace, and Granny and GrandDad would be pleased we are showing off the family's hard work and pride. Carmel Valley Ranch House is a 5 generation family treasure, and we feel truly blessed to share our heritage with you.

MaryJane Caputo-Walters purchased this cabin in 1930

Why MaryJane Caputo-Walters chose Carmel Valley

Samuel F.B. Morse was Paul Veeder's Yale college buddy. In the late 1920's, Sam encouraged Paul and Grace to buy almost 800 acres in Carmel Valley, and a handful of lots on the Monterey Peninsula. They enjoyed escaping the fog on the coast to visit the Carmel Valley sunshine. Nice choice!

What makes this cabin unique

Be properly warned. There is never enough time to enjoy your stay with family and friends at Carmel Valley Ranch House. Time here seems to move slowly and many folks say it feels like they are in a beautiful dream. Unfortunately, no matter how many nights anyone stays, it is NEVER enough time, and the last day at The Ranch House comes too quickly every time. We recommend adding at least one extra day to your getaway whenever possible! It'll do your heart and soul good.

Guestbook comments from the manager

The house was INCREDIBLE! We had such a wonderful time. The house was simply gorgeous!! The things that you bought are first class. It was very fun to be the first guests. We had a great family weekend. We hope to return soon!

Delightful Rustic Carmel Valley Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Based on the excellent description and photos of "the Ranchhouse", I knew the this was going to be the perfect holiday vacation spot for our family. We had been visiting our children in LA for a couple of months and all of us needed a vacation! Mary Jane Caputo met us in the village and guided us to the rustic home located within the Garland Ranch State Park. She already had heaters going in the main rooms and bedrooms (that's right, no heat!!!) and showed us around. We happened to arrive on the coldest night of the year and the home was incredibly cold. The first night we piled on the blankets and Mary Jane sent us another heater the next day. Because radiant heat floors had been put in, within 24 hours things were toasty and perfect. The property is a gem to take short hikes within and the Garzas Creek bubbled beside the house. Every morning a small herd of deer hung out nearby, occasionally offering our dogs a sporting run. The kitchen was large and accommodating. I did have everything a family could need. Because it was Christmas, I brought our own china, linens, and silver and serving pieces...and if you like to set a nice table, you should do that at any time during the year. Our only complaint about the house is that it is extremely dark. You cannot read indoors at all. Lamps are not sufficient. We read outdoors by the creek occasionally and played games at night. Our family highly recommends this gem for families, couples and friends. It is close to the charming village and only a twenty minute drive from Carmel-By-The-Sea. Mary Jane was attentive and handled any inquiries from us quickly. No one in our family wanted to leave and we can't wait to return. PS The house was decorated for the holidays and we felt welcome and festive from the very first moment.

Wonderful historic cabin. Comfortable beds, great living space, lovely grounds.

  • 3 of 5

First night was very dark until we got used to where lights were and functioning at less than normal light.(difficult to find adequate light to read at night). Lantern was a blessing for nightwalk to the car!! Kitchen well supplied but oven does not close tightly so baking was always a guess. Bunk room/2nd bedroom bath needs a shower liner, not just the cloth curtain. Everyone used one shower sequentially so a bit tricky with 9. House best for 1 or two families with kids. Or very adaptable multi family groups. Hot tub and outside seating lovely. As is setting. The proximity to Garland Park was a treat. So quiet we could hear the deer talking in the morning and the brook babbling at night.

Quintessential Carmel Valley cabin!

  • 5 of 5

This is a unique property with lots of authentic rustic character. We found it very well equipped to easily accommodate our family of 8. We had so much fun exploring the clever craftsmanship of the cabin. The patio with fireplace, hot tub, cuishoned patio furniture, and gas grill made for easy outdoor entertaining. Very relaxing to listen to the Garzas Creek rippling and the wildlife rustling, and not an automobile, leaf blower or neighbor breaking the tranquility.

The property is located up a dirt road and is very secluded. One of the highlights of our trip was the cabin itself. Much local history connected to the property. Quite romantic to stay in a carefully preserved 1930's cabin. We enjoyed the dartboard, pool table, board games, and flat panel tv for watching DVDs from the media cabinet. The house is primarily heated with wood burning stoves and fireplaces. Wood and fire starters are provided, but some effort is required to heat the place.

I will definitely stay here again.

Great place to relax, have to go back!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the cabin for labor day weekend while we were attending a wedding in Carmel Valley. Our stay was much too short! The atmosphere of the cabin is GREAT, its like stepping back in time but with all the modern conveniences. The dual sided fireplace is amazing and the centerpiece of the home, we used it a lot, and there was plenty of firewood and kindling to not worry about running out. There was plenty of room for the 5 adults in my family, water pressure was fine, we even used both showers at the same time, having a full size washer and dryer was a blessing also. The heated tile floors were great on the one chilly morning we had, the kitchen was well stocked, with pot, pans, dishes, cutting boards, platters, knives and other items, the stove and oven works perfectly. I really wanted to bake a pie from scratch but ran out of time, apple pie cooling in the window sill would have been picture perfect. The pool table was a big hit as well as the Victrola, there was a decent selection of old jazz albums that made the atmosphere that much better. We had a great time having a BBQ and an evening of s'mores out back using the grill and the outdoor fireplace. It was a night to remember. I have Sprint as my cell provider and coverage was spotty but there is wifi with decent speeds plus a land line phone. The caretakers Ben and Laurie were very attentive when needed, even though the had family from out of town visiting they responded to my every question very promptly, night or day, even thought they live right next door there is a big fence and a large garage/out building between them and the cabin so you don't even see their home. They even had all of the fireplaces and woodstoves loaded with wood and paper, ready to light when we got there. The hot tub worked great and Ben and Laurie had it already heated when we got there, it would great to use it in the evening for some star gazing. The driveway back to the cabin is pretty much a trail, I am sure no one figures it out the first time, but I drove my loaded Chrysler 300 back to the cabin with no issues, might be a little tough if you are a city folk and its raining but I am sure Ben would be there to help you out. I really can't say enough about this place, I am sure, you will fall in love with it as we did. I am just looking for an excuse to come back, I think I would like to try it in the winter with the creek running and a real excuse to used the fireplace and woodstove. 10/10!!

Unique opportunity to stay in an amazing American family retreat

  • 5 of 5

The ranch is an amazing, unique property, in the most peaceful setting, filled with fascinating antiques gathered from a charmingly personal family history, but with all the modern amenities you will need. The photos and video really can't do such a unique property justice - it exceeded our expectations. For us foreigners it was a taste of real America - on first arrival we could fantasise that we were in "Little House on the Prairie", whilst evenings by the outdoor fire were a magical reminder of Disney's Sleeping Beauty.

We approached the property from the south and were directed by our sat nav off the highway and on a long quiet twisting road that eventually bought us into the valley. This diversion turned out to be a highlight of our trip with plenty of wildlife and birds to view - including a quick braking as a pair of golden eagles blocked our way. Plus the pod of dolphins right by the shore at Carmel by the Sea, made this stay the wildlife highlight of our trip to California.

So peaceful. And a hot tub in the woods!? Mr Gary the caretaker was amazing - kids still talking about the chickens and horses. And he & his lovely wife took us on a beautiful tour of the horses! We were amazed by the chain of state trails in the area - connecting right up to Garzas. Our 4yo and 6yo had no trouble hiking 6 miles each day. And - you can see the ocean! A class act all around. Keep this one a secret! Amazing linens, bathrobes for all, and radiant floor heating. Thank you all. This was better than the Monterey Aquarium. And we found the best newts I've ever seen. THANK YOU GARZAS CREEK!
