The Maine Eastern Railroad runs through Wiscasset, and can take you to Rockland where special events are held each year such as the Maine Lobster Festival, and the North Atlantic Blues Festival. Boothbay Harbor will hosts the Annual Windjammer days in June and includes two days of family fun, street parade, antique boat parade, and fireworks over the Harbor. Owls Head Transportation Museum offers many events throughout the summer. Well known Moody's Diner in Waldoboro offers homemade Maine cooking, and just a 20 minute drive from the house. Bath is home to the Maine Maritime Museum, a popular destination for those interested in Maine's maritime heritage and culture. Camden, Pemaquid, Damariscotta and many other must see coastal towns are all under an hours drive. A peaceful, relaxing place, yet close to all that the Mid-Coast has to offer.
My husband and I built this Sheepscot Shores home in 2001. I grew up in Wiscasset and my husband, who grew up in New Jersey, loved this area and we decided this waterfront property would be a perfect fit to build a home. We have 5 children and we all have spent many holidays and celebrations at the home, along with our extended family.
Sandra purchased this house in 2001
I have always loved being by the water and this property is located on a dead end road, is very quiet, and the view is beautiful no matter what time of year it is. It is close to coastal Route 1, a popular road for traveling along the coast, and it's easy commutes to all that the Mid Coast has to offer. It's also an easy drive to some of Maine's lakes and beaches.
The house is 75 feet from the water's edge, and there is an easy walkway getting down to the water. The large deck, located on the waterfront side of house, is great for sitting outside and taking in the view. A grocery store is only a 5 minute drive and less than that to the village of Wiscasset where many small shops are located, including antiques. Red's Eat's, a very popular and nationally known eatery, is located in the village as well. They offer the best lobster and crab rolls in Maine!
We had a wonderful time in your beautiful home! You provide everything we could have needed and more. The accommodations are also very child friendly, which was greatly appreciated as our families grow. We are a group of friends who meet yearly from various parts of the US and your home was perfect for us!
After over a month of painstakingly checking out rental homes in the mid-coast Maine region last spring, I decided on this one for our surprise family celebration of my husband's 60th birthday in September. The minute we walked in the house, everyone knew I had made the right choice! Not only was the house in a great location for traveling either north or south for a day's exploration (which we did - the Windjammer Festival in Camden; Pemaquid Lighthouse; a schooner ride in Boothbay; kayaking in East Bath; LL Bean; a wonderful day in Kennebunkport, just to name a few!), the house was also perfect for just staying home and relaxing (which we also did - quiet moments in the chair by the water, grilling out on the deck, boiling lobsters at $3.99/lb - WOW!, and putting together jigsaw puzzles on the coffee table to the sounds of a crackling fireplace at night). We found everything immaculate and loved the fact that there were so many little extras in the house that Sandra had provided (the cooler to get lobsters from the market; the amazing spice drawer in the kitchen; the stocked laundry room, etc.). You just don't see that in many other rental homes - you have to start from scratch when you arrive and end up with a lot of extra expenses. Our family of 10 loved the three-floor opportunity to be together (or to not be!), the incredible back deck (and view), and the warm and inviting way the house was decorated. Did I mention the wonderful master bedroom and bath? WOW! Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful home with us. We made a memory that will last the rest of our lives!
This house was the perfect size and layout for our large, multi-generational family. In total, we had 9 adults and 2 children ranging from ages 3 to 60. There was enough room in the home for everyone to spread out to have time alone, while the main floor was perfect when we all got together. The kitchen was fabulous for cooking family dinners and we made a lot of use of the expansive deck. All of the little extras provided, from the spice drawer to the game/puzzle collection, to the provided firewood and binoculars made it easy to feel at home from the minute we arrived. The location is very quiet and surrounded by woods with no road traffic, yet still only a few minutes out of town. The sunrise every morning over the river was absolutely beautiful and the campfire pit was perfect for the evenings. Communicating with Sandra was quick and easy and she provided us with some great recommendations of things to do and places to eat in the area which we took advantage of.
There are only a couple things I would change about the home to make it even better: 1) The house only has 3 window A/C units. It was a bit tricky figuring out who in our group would be stuck in a bedroom without the A/C. It turned out just fine because we went in late August and the temperature cooled down a lot at night, so the provided box window fans kept the rooms plenty cool. However, if we had gone earlier in the summer without the cooler evenings, the older adults in our group would have had some problems sleeping in the heat. 2) It was a little tricky figuring out how to make use of the canoe since the shoreline is very rocky. On our last day we realized that high tide in the early afternoon was the perfect time to launch the boat. We noticed many other homes on the river had long docks that extend into the water, which would be beneficial for using the canoe even at lower tide. 3) The Queen bedroom on the main floor (the converted office) lacked a bit of privacy due to the glass pocket doors that were only covered with a sheer curtain. My sister-in-law ended up staying comfortably in this room, but an adult couple might want more privacy.
Overall, I would highly recommend this home and location for visiting Maine. My family had an awesome time and if we ever come back to the area, this is where we would stay again without hesitation! Thank you Sandra for sharing your home with us!!!
Based on the great pictures we were very excited about this property, but the pictures really do not do it justice. The views from the deck are great. The house is much larger than it looked. The lower level provided great separation when needed, as we were travelling with several small families. There is even a small play room down there that the kids loved. The floor to ceiling windows in the living room provided fantastic views, and I really didn't want to get off the couch. The house was a short drive to downtown Wiscasset, and a reasonable drive to Boothbay, Popham, Reid, and Bath - all of which have plenty to do. The fire pit and canoe were a great addition. Sandra was great to work with as well. Can't say enough good things - book with confidence.
This was the perfect home for our extended family vacation of 10 people. The house had plenty of rooms and beds to meet all of our needs. The house was well kept, but also felt lived in and helped to make us feel right at home.
The kitchen was well stocked with everything you could imagine. We really enjoyed sitting on the deck in late afternoon. The view was lovely! We also enjoyed a camp fire one night which was a lot of fun. The kids used the canoe a few days and really enjoyed it.
We enjoy going to beach, so most days we would make the trip to Popham, which was a bit of a hike (45 mins), but well worth it. We tried to go to Reid State park one day but the green heads kept us from getting out of the car. Reid is an awesome place, but make sure you check on green heads before venturing out.
Thanks to Sandra and Glen for answering all our questions in a timely manner. We definitely would consider vacationing again at this wonderful spot!
Three generations - 12 people from 2 to 66 years old - of our family just enjoyed a wonderful week at this great house. It is very spacious, with something for everyone. A great lawn overlooking the river was perfect for outdoor games with the kids. The kitchen was stocked with everything we might need. The deck was large, with furniture for all of us. The playroom was perfect for the little ones. There was a great big dinner table - perfect for puzzles and boards games (too many to choose from!) - and a comfortable living room with room for everyone! Sandra has made this home so welcoming, like no vacation home we have seen before. The location was great too - close to the town center, and not too far from Boothbay Harbor and Daramiscotta. We enjoyed a day trip to the lighthouse at Pemaquid Point and enjoyed the beach too! We can't recommend this house enough...and can't wait to come back!
Our multigenerational family of 11 have vacationed every year in the Wiscasset/Damariscotta area for approx. the past 6 years and every year we try a different cottage. Some on a lake, some in town, some with history. But this Wiscasset property tops them all! The bedrooms were plentiful with multiple options for everyone. With 3 full baths there were no lines or competition for showering (which is remarkable with 3 teenage girls!). The house had many extra amenities that just provided a feeling of luxury. This home by far, provides an extra special experience while vacationing here in this beautiful state.
