About Shawn Skeele

The land this house resides was my grandfather's 100 acre lot bought in the late 1930's and put in a family trust for future generations. With God's hand of provision, I moved my family back to the lake to raise buying 6 acres overlooking the lake. My older brother and I built this log home in 2002.

My wife and I homeschool our kids. I'm part owner of the family insurance agency established by my grandfather in 1957 being a 3rd generation owner desiring to carry on a multi-generational vision.

I grew up on the other side of the lake, went to Houghton College in western NY, started my own business for 13 years and moved back in 2001 to nurture and expanded my family insurance agency.

Shawn Skeele purchased this house in 2002

Why Shawn Skeele chose Finger Lakes

This Post & Beam Cedar Log Home speaks for itself. It's private, isolated, custom made with a layout that is open and spacious being ideal for family reunions or retreats. For me, it's like coming home to a vacation property everyday. The view of God's creation and animals outside standing anywhere in the house is breath taking. With deer, foxes, rabbits, turkeys, ducks, eagles, hawks or chickens, you never know what you're going to wake up to or see during the day. We have awesome sunsets as we relax from the day's events giving thanks reflecting at the wonder and beauty around us.

You have a great variety of activities with family and friends. Enjoy the lakefront down the road with swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and lake scenery. Up at the house, have a big bonfire, gas grill some steak, rest in the hammock, play horseshoes, roast some smores, tell stories and jokes or just enjoy the scenery.

Inside, play some pool while watching a game, use the exercise equipment, nap, enjoy the open spacious rooms and deck. Oh, and enjoy the scenery overlooking the lake.

We have a beautiful playroom for the kids, barbie house, penned up ducks-chickens-rabbits-geese to view, play on the swing set, sandbox, games galore and wifi.

All this is just at the house. Syracuse, Cortland and Oneida are just 1/2 hour away. Ski resorts, golf courses, state forests with trails for hiking, biking and skiing, elegant restaurants 12 minutes away, true Italian pizza in 5 minutes and freshly made bread every day at the bottom of the hill by our neighbors.

During the winter, our 800 ft driveway is the best sledding path in all central NY!

All four seasons provide refreshing perspectives about this creation made just for us. We look forward to sharing it with you for a spell.

What makes this house unique

A restful, peaceful, tranquil, fun, spacious, Post & Beam Cedar Log Home experience awaits you, family and friends. Call me with your questions and how we can make this an ideal vacation.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a Thanksgiving gathering (memorial) at Shawn's lovely Cedar Log Home. Our group was large with multi-age extended family members. Shawn made comfortable arrangements for our stay and was very helpful in every way. The kitchen is fully equipped with a variety of large pots and pans, plenty of utensils, spices, misc. extras. The fireplace is cozy, and the living room large and spread out with wonderful views of the lake. A nice mix of mingling and private spaces. We had a soccer game in the snow on the lawn. The deck is huge and right off the kitchen. The house is set back and up from the road - a nice private location but easy to get into town. Lovely rolling hills and farms in this area too. The lake is beautiful. The place is clean and well maintained. The radiant heat made the floors warm on bare feet - especially the bathrooms. Lots of games and things to do in the house for family.

Nice place to stay

  • 4 of 5

Our family kept busy while we stayed at Post & Beam. We had from age 6 to 77. The host / owner had many things to keep the kids busy when it rained and / or in the evening. Two closets of toys and board games and a small closet of crafts. Half of the family went fishing / swimming at the lake during the daylight hours. Again the host / owner provided kayaks, paddle boat, and a canoe. Other family members went sight seeing to places like the baseball hall of fame, a zoo, hiking, and went to see water falls! Great time had by all!

Log style house with plenty of room for everyone

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a weekend - and were able to host a small gathering of family and friends to celebrate our daughter's college graduation. Shawne and his family are gracious hosts. The kitchen is big and roomy, with pretty much anything you need. The deck and living room have an amazing view of the lake. I can only wish the weather had been better, and that we had a longer stay to enjoy the outdoor amenities and the lake.

This house is a family home. Don't expect it to be perfect - expect it to be comfortable and lived in. But being a family home - you will feel right at home. Enjoy!

You get what you see!

  • 5 of 5

I found this house and rented it for a family vacation. Lets just say once we arrived my family couldn't stop telling me what a good job I did finding the house. The house sits up on a hill with a beautiful scenery of the landscape and lake. Big enough to sleep 11 adults and 6 small children! The kids enjoyed the house the most whether they were in the kids play room, outside on the playground or on the lake. Shawn was a great host making sure we had everything we needed and he gave us valuable information. We brought our 2 jet skis and it felt like we had the lake all to ourselves. On the lake front property we were able to bring the jet skis up on the pebble beach area enjoy lunch then push them back in the water and enjoy our day, we even tied them up and left them there all week (to avoid taking and putting them in the water). Our only suggestions would be a screen door for the deck entrance to avoid "bugs galore" and enjoy the nice breeze you feel on the hill. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone looking to enjoy a very nice house on a very scenic and quiet lake! Thank you Shawn.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We appreciate your comments and glad that everyone enjoyed their stay. In regards to the screen door, it is on our radar to have not only a screen door on the back entry deck but also the side deck area. I hope to have this accomplished before the end of September. Please keep us in mind for a winter retreat, as we have four ski centers within a 30 minute radius and one only five minutes away. Also just five minutes away is Highland Forest that has several cross country ski trails and you can rent snowshoes there also. Thank you again.

Comfortable, spacious cabin with a great lake view

  • 5 of 5

My group (two couples and two singles) had a great stay here - lovely view and lots of amenities that made our stay quite enjoyable. Shawn has done a lot to make his home welcoming for visitors, including a kitchen & grill with all the gear you might need, plenty of clean linens, and lots of little touches that were much appreciated. He was very flexible on check-in/check-out and regular communication before and during our stay, and had lots of great tips on activities in the area (if you like hiking, fishing, or cycling, it's a great part of the world).

Two notes that may be helpful:

1) The various birds in the neighboring coop wake up quite early (around 5 or 5:30am), so light sleepers may want to close windows/wear earplugs.

2) The internet is not terribly fast, so not great if lots of people want to use it at once (or if you want to stream video etc).

Neither of the above (nor anything else) prevented us from having a great long weekend - if you're looking for a quiet home base in DeRuyter you'll enjoy it here. FYI, The house is about 20 minutes away from Cazenovia, just up the hill from DeRuyter Lake.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review and helpful comments. With the variety of people and interests, were always looking to broaden options and maximize the vacation experience. I'm glad everyone enjoyed themselves and all expectations were met and/or exceeded. In regards to the birds, I will see about the removal of the more louder ones and trying to mediate what can be done about those I can't remove like leaving ear plugs for my guests that may want them. With the earlier sunrises during spring and summer, the evidence of wildlife around becomes evident. Regarding the internet speed, there are changes in the speed admittedly with satellite service if many users are on simultaneously. I have noticed differences also when many people are at the lake too. Nine months out of the year(September to May), few live here year round so it usually isn't much of an issue. Being rural, we only have one landline provider, Frontier, whose hub is almost 5 miles away putting us on the fringe of coverage that was sketchy at best when using them. The satellite service was certainly faster and more consistent for us being the best option available to us in the area. Appreciatively Yours, Shawn
