Nestled above Muir Beach overlooking the ocean, the headlands and San Francisco in the distance, you’ll find The Cottage at Muir Beach – a stylish getaway ideal for those looking to relax and unwind in the peace and tranquility of glorious ocean and mountain views.
This magical and enchanting rural escape features a charming living / dining area, kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom, attic / loft sleeping area. Private deck and parking for 2 cars. The Cottage at Muir Beach is located in the heart of Marin County’s stunning Golden Gate National Recreation Area providing fabulous opportunities for outdoor pursuits.
The Cottage At Muir Beach is situated next door to Mole's Cottage separated by a private and inspiring succulent garden (also see listing # 672817.) The location of both these cottages not only provides privacy for those seeking a private retreat, they also cater to families and friends who wish to book two properties in reasonably close proximity so they can vacation in the same spectacular location if required.
The Cottage at Muir Beach is enveloped by the constant therapeutic sound of the ocean and is the kind of heaven on earth that soothes the soul. Although it is within easy reach of everything, it feels like a world apart. Owned, operated and decorated by renowned British interior designer Victoria Hamilton-Rivers.
I am a British interior designer and home stager, living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. As the daughter of a British army officer, I have visited and lived in many parts of the world: Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States of America.
I first visited and fell in love with the San Francisco Bay Area in 1997. I became a permanent resident in 2003. All my life I have been drawn to and fascinated by the ocean and to the life within and around it.
In 2008 I realized a lifelong dream and bought two cottages overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the northern California coast in the idyllic community of Muir Beach.
While owning one cottage by the beach has been a lifelong dream, I never imagined myself owning two. As an interior designer, the obvious and exciting thing to do was to renovate one of them and offer it for rental to those of you around the world who share my passion for clean and simple interiors and the extraordinary privilege it is to be close to nature and the sea.
The Magical Cottage At Muir Beach is simply that. Month after month it gives me tremendous pleasure to offer my guests a really exceptional place to stay where they can relax and unwind to the sound of the ocean in the newly renovated cottage. Within the backdrop and magnificence of Marin County’s Golden Gate National Recreational Area, heaven and earth are literally at your fingertips.
People from all over the world agree The Cottage At Muir Beach is the perfect nurturing “home away from home” on the Northern California Coast. Whether you are seeking solitude, a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or celebrating someone or something special, it’s all here at The Cottage At Muir Beach.

This is the most beautiful location on the entire California coast.
Hiking, designing interiors while being inspired by the ocean.
We couldn't have chosen a better location ore our trail running holiday! Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us - we will be back!
Spent a relaxing anniversary weekend at the cozy Cottage at Muir Beach. We soaked in the beauty of the views, enjoyed dining in, relaxing on the deck. The Cottage at Muir Beach is better than advertised - the description and pictures don't do it justice. Victoria is a hospitable and gracious host - we will return as often as we can.
This is truly a magical cottage that provides a magical experience. The views and sounds of the ocean are priceless, the cottage amenities were perfect, and the decorating was spot on. So very relaxing away from the hustle of the city tucked away on the side of a mountain overlooking Muir Beach which was only footsteps away. We'd stay in this or Victoria's other cottage in a heartbeat upon returning to the bay area.
After reading every last review, I was wondering if the magical cottage could possibly live up to all the wonderful things people have had to say about it. It does and then some! We visited the cottage for spring break at the end of March, what a perfect time to visit the weather was perfect. As everyone seems to mention, Victoria is lovely and has thought of every last detail for her charming cottage and it's guests. We were pleased to find a coffee bean grinder and french press, both of which were used every day during our stay. The location is absolute perfection, very few properties has was Victoria's does in location alone. A quick walk down the hill to the beach, 2-3 mile drive to Muir Woods, 15 minute drive to Mill Valley, hour drive to Point Reyes - highly recommend taking the drive and 45 minutes to Five Brooks Ranch for horseback riding. So many things to do! And let's talk about the view, ahhhhh, that glorious ocean view. My husband and I would get up early and watch the dolphins play from our bed with the binoculars Victoria has thoughtfully left for her guests. Sitting and watching the stars on the deck at night was one of our favorite things to do, the stars shined brightly for us! In addition to the best location Muir Beach has to offer, the cottage itself is cozy and charming, spectacularly decorated with a modern, beachy feel. Extra comfy blankets and linens tucked away in storage under the built in sitting area. Victoria maximized every inch of the cottage and our family of 4 found we had plenty of room. One smartly decorated bathroom worked perfectly for our family. I can't say enough good things about the Magical Cottage at Muir Beach. We can't wait to return. Thank you for your hospitality, Victoria. You've created a gem and lucky us to have been fortunate to find it!
My husband and I stayed over the Christmas and New Year's holidays this year at the Magical Cottage, and may I just say-we loved it! We are from the midwest and it was a delightful getaway from bad weather. Even on days that were cloudy, didn't matter. (And there weren't that many!) I curled up in the window seat every morning with my coffee and looked out at the most splendid view imaginable. If I was up early enough, I could see Point Bonita lighthouse flashing, and of course, ships going in and out of SF Bay. And the place has it's own mascot-a little hummingbird that had a couple favorite perches right off our front door in the Aloe plants. (Which are incredible in their own right!) He would sit tight, even if I was a yard away!
We were thrilled to see how many bonfires there were on the beach, both Christmas, and particularly New year's Eve, right in full view from the cottage. A truly amazing place to find yourself. I was able to lie in bed at night and watch the stars and moon move across the night sky through the branches of magnificent pines. Need I say more?
Well, yes, I can-the cottage itself! Truly beautifully appointed. Victoria has thought through every light fixture and switch and amenity you could want. Charming and cozy! You will love it.
Victoria has created an oasis of perfect design in this divine cottage. Every detail is perfect for those who like attention to detail. The views of the ocean are wonderful, and you can see them from every room but the bathroom. She has a cleaver use of mirrors to reflect the view no matter where you are. The succlent gardens are to die for. No surprise she is an interior designer (and a good one!). Beware you'll get here and never want to leave.....
The road in is narrow and it is a hard place to find at night, so I would not recommend arriving after dark. The rental comes with lots of leads and information for guests to have before arrival. Make sure to get groceries before you get to the area, as once you pass the highway exit, you will not find anything else commercial. There is a great English Pub right on the edge of the neighborhood (a 10-20 min walk), but they are very busy, and don't return calls when trying to make reservations - so go early or at off times to get in.
The area is great to walk if you are in shape, as the roads are very steep. You can walk or drive down to the beach. We did not find anyone else on the "naked beach" to the north you have to walk to this one, you can't drive to it), probably becasue it was too cold (although that beach was much less windy than the main one), and too early in the day. Many people built fires down on the main public beach. Keep in mind the area is very steep, including the drive, which is shared by 3 properties.
This cottage would be the perfect retreat to be quiet, and gather rest and relaxation. There is a double bed in the master, plus a twin in the second BR. Bath with a shower, full kitchen, stunning views, and 2 fabulous areas to be outside - one on either side of the cottage. No fire pit as photograhed, but it has just almost everything else you could ever desire. Lots of outdoor seating areas, and beautiful things to take in. No live TV, but there is cell coverage and a DVD player with lots of movies. An incredible place to take in the details and unplug.
You could visit SF (~30Min?), Napa(~90 min?), Sonoma(~60 min?), Mill Valley (~20 min?), Sausilito (~15min?), take brewery or winery tours, bike or explore the coast from this cottage. My times to each are by memory and not necessarily accurate ....
Try a trip to Sebastapol and eat at the farm to market restaurant Fork Roadhouse - a foodie gem worth the drive!
Enjoy - wish I was back there....
We had a great stay at the Cottage. Very comfortable and beautifully decorated. Kitchen has everything we needed and we enjoyed our breakfasts and lunches on the sunny deck. Great views and quiet, with only the sound of the waves below. We will return!
Zen Center, The overlook (uninterrupted panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean), Muir Woods, and Pelican Inn.
