Nestled above Muir Beach overlooking the ocean, the headlands and San Francisco in the distance, you’ll find The Cottage at Muir Beach – a stylish getaway ideal for those looking to relax and unwind in the peace and tranquility of glorious ocean and mountain views.
This magical and enchanting rural escape features a charming living / dining area, kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom, attic / loft sleeping area. Private deck and parking for 2 cars. The Cottage at Muir Beach is located in the heart of Marin County’s stunning Golden Gate National Recreation Area providing fabulous opportunities for outdoor pursuits.
The Cottage At Muir Beach is situated next door to Mole's Cottage separated by a private and inspiring succulent garden (also see listing # 672817.) The location of both these cottages not only provides privacy for those seeking a private retreat, they also cater to families and friends who wish to book two properties in reasonably close proximity so they can vacation in the same spectacular location if required.
The Cottage at Muir Beach is enveloped by the constant therapeutic sound of the ocean and is the kind of heaven on earth that soothes the soul. Although it is within easy reach of everything, it feels like a world apart. Owned, operated and decorated by renowned British interior designer Victoria Hamilton-Rivers.
I am a British interior designer and home stager, living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. As the daughter of a British army officer, I have visited and lived in many parts of the world: Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States of America.
I first visited and fell in love with the San Francisco Bay Area in 1997. I became a permanent resident in 2003. All my life I have been drawn to and fascinated by the ocean and to the life within and around it.
In 2008 I realized a lifelong dream and bought two cottages overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the northern California coast in the idyllic community of Muir Beach.
While owning one cottage by the beach has been a lifelong dream, I never imagined myself owning two. As an interior designer, the obvious and exciting thing to do was to renovate one of them and offer it for rental to those of you around the world who share my passion for clean and simple interiors and the extraordinary privilege it is to be close to nature and the sea.
The Magical Cottage At Muir Beach is simply that. Month after month it gives me tremendous pleasure to offer my guests a really exceptional place to stay where they can relax and unwind to the sound of the ocean in the newly renovated cottage. Within the backdrop and magnificence of Marin County’s Golden Gate National Recreational Area, heaven and earth are literally at your fingertips.
People from all over the world agree The Cottage At Muir Beach is the perfect nurturing “home away from home” on the Northern California Coast. Whether you are seeking solitude, a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or celebrating someone or something special, it’s all here at The Cottage At Muir Beach.

This is the most beautiful location on the entire California coast.
Hiking, designing interiors while being inspired by the ocean.
We couldn't have chosen a better location ore our trail running holiday! Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us - we will be back!
Spent a relaxing anniversary weekend at the cozy Cottage at Muir Beach. We soaked in the beauty of the views, enjoyed dining in, relaxing on the deck. The Cottage at Muir Beach is better than advertised - the description and pictures don't do it justice. Victoria is a hospitable and gracious host - we will return as often as we can.
We loved our time at The Magical Cottage at Muir Beach. From the moment you drive up the driveway, you know you are someplace special. Our two girls loved the loft and having their own space. We slept with the windows open and listened to the waves all night. Victoria has included everything you could possibly need for a relaxing stay-- as well as really great wi-fi if you want! There are books and games and a great selection of DVD's. The community of Muir Beach is amazing-- everyone was friendly and it is an easy walk to both beaches. We had a delightful lunch at the Pelican Inn, and went to the Overlook every night to watch the sunset over the Farrallon Islands. You cannot go wrong with this cottage. It is a truly exceptional gem.
My sweetie and I sought a cozy, romantic, quiet, ocean view cottage within an hour of SF where we could hibernate and/or hike for 3 days. Victoria's Magic Cottage was perfect in every way - the views from the living room and bedroom were stunning and waves lulled us to sleep each night. The decor and facilities were excellent; clean and comfortable. There were maps/directions of things to see and do nearby. We had gorgeous weather before a storm rolled in...and enjoyed breakfast on the deck and later, the wind/waves of the storm.
It was the perfect getaway cottage for us, and we look forward to returning again and again.
We wanted to enjoy the California coast north of San Francisco over Thanksgiving. The Magical Cottage at Muir Beach was perfect!!! Sound of the ocean from the cabin and great deck to take in the views. Usually we stay in Stinson or Bolinas, but Muir Beach was nice and tranquil. The beach is an easy walk from the cabin (it does require a short climb uphill back). The cabin is clean and comfortable, with a fully stocked kitchen. We would love to come back. Took a peak at the amazing succulent garden outside of the adjacent Mole's Cabin and would also love to try that unit out next time! Can't recommend this listing enough!
Our stay at the Cottage at Muir Beach was nothing short of perfect. The accommodations were even better than we expected. First, the view. It's spectacular. Whether you're on the porch or simply gazing out one of the many windows, you'll be amazed by the beauty you're surrounded by. Second, the cottage. It's clean, perfectly functional, and well decorated. You won't want to leave so pack food. Third, the activities. Muir Beach, the Pelican Inn, Muir Woods, and the scenic overlook are a few minutes away. The walking trails are challenging, but the views are spectacular. It's hard to believe this place is so close to the big city.
Tips for your stay:
-Pick up staples at the grocery store to cook meals at the cottage. The roads to the closest town are windy and when you get there, it's congested. Besides, you want to get away from civilization, right?
-Pack laundry detergent if you want to wash clothes
-Pack bottled water or a canteen if you're planning on doing extended walking/hiking
-Sleep with the windows open to listen to the waves all night long
-Make sure to venture to both beaches, and grab a beer at the bar at the Pelican Inn
-Muir Woods is a short drive away. Get there before 8am to get a parking spot on the road (that isn't a few miles away!)
-Make the 3 minute drive to take in the view at the Overlook
What a treasure the cottage is! After contemplating staying in a downtown San Fran hotel, we were so glad we opted for the Magical Cottage instead. It was absolutely charming, well-appointed, clean and comfortable. And the location couldn't be beat. A stunning view of the ocean from high in the treetops, surrounded by beautiful succulents, blooming bushes and bougainvillea. Hummingbirds buzzed around the property. We enjoyed both beaches and the short walk to get there. It's also close to parking for hiking Muir Woods. Victoria provided great tips, plus there were books and maps in the cottage to point us out for day trips. It took an easy 45 minutes to go to Sonoma. It takes about 10 minutes of winding roads to get "out" to the larger roads for access, but we came to enjoy the drive and the quiet of our exclusive little location. Mill Valley is very close and fun to shop/walk/eat. We stocked up on snacks and beverages, and found all the cookware we needed for the one night we ate in. Snugly tucked into the neighborhood, we appreciated the remoteness of the location. A great stay - from the first day we kept saying we should come back and stay again with our kids in tow. A true gem!
