About David and Meredith Vaughn

My wife and I are lovers of the southwest and Taos area and found a property to build a custom home in 2000. Our family designed and built the house using local materials and techniques to the delight of many guests who have enjoyed the peaceful surroundings at the place we call the Retreat at Rancho Canyon.

David and Meredith Vaughn purchased this house in 2000

Why David and Meredith Vaughn chose New Mexico

Just outside Taos, but next to 100,000 acres of Carson National forest with great views, this property and area was love at first sight.

What makes this house unique

A great passive solar location with privacy, views, it has it all. We have added on to the house and provided new features which make it a true Retreat property!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Incredible home David and Meredith.

My family was fortunate enough to stay at the beautiful and private 'Retreat at Rancho Canyon' over Mother's Day weekend. My mother and father were visitng from the midwest and we thought we'd treat them to a get-away while they were visiting Colorado, they we're thrilled with the accomodations.

The home and the property could not be better outlined in the description, great views from every room, thoughtful space planning and decorating..the list goes on. It is evident when you enter the courtyard patio that David has put his architectural background to great use in the design and layout of each aspect of the home, and he, along with his wife Meredith and son Jordan, have done an excellent job decorating, designing and building furniture to compliment the SW theme. From the outdoor pond, waterfall, and firepit to the cozy living room and wonderful sleeping quarters the attention to detail is impeccable. It seems they have thought through every piece of this dream home, even going so far as to provide recycling, composting, and water saving measures to ensure the enjoyment of resources for all those that follow in our path. I promise, you will not be dissappointed during your stay.

The location of the home is also very convenient to town yet isolated enough to feel like you are in a secluded forest. Just 5 miles from Taos and all of the shops and museums it is the perfect answer to those looking for serenity, yet wanting to be close enough the experience the restaurants, museums, the pueblo, and the unique 'flavor' of the southwest.

Thanks again David and Meredith for sharing your wonderful home with us, we look forward to another visit in the future.

Perfect Honeymoon Spot

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed David and Meredith's home more than we imagined. First of all, David was such a help the entire time. He was alway reachable via phone, and he requests to chat with you before you arrive. He also sent information about the property and the city of Taos. Not only is the home itself breathtaking, but the love story behind the making of the home is also inspiring. Taos was a creative and stunning little town, and we enjoyed exploring for four full days. Be sure to follow David and Meredith's advice and check out the local hiking trails. I promise that renting this home is a good decision! The perfect retreat!

Absolutely perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

This place was perfect for our family of 5. It was spacious, yet cozy. It had all the personal touches to feel like home and was handcrafted using such beautiful, local materials. The whole place was like a work of art. Then the amenities were great: the fire ring, meditation house, ho ttub, nice secluded porch and sitting areas outside. The kitchen was well furnished with nice kitchen ware and appliances. And the location was perfect. Adjacent to hiking and not far at all from downtown Taos, Angel Fire, and Taos. I would reteurn in a heartbeat!

Beautiful retreat!!

  • 5 of 5

This property is beautiful, easy to get to, close to great skiing, and provided more than enough space for our party of four (plus dogs)! We enjoyed using the fully equipped kitchen and fire pit during our stay as well. This is the perfect spot for a getaway vacation.

Great getaway

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful house to escape to right on the edge of Carson National forest. If you like seclusion and a quiet retreat you will love this place. I could have spent the entire time sitting by the fire reading books from the extensive library in the house but there were too many wonderful things in the area to explore. I consider myself (as does my husband) a pretty picky person with very high expectations that are rarely met and this home was just wonderful. I would highly recommend it.

Taos Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Lovely place. Very quiet, serene and scenic. The kitchen had everything needed if someone wanted to cook. Close enough to town to enjoy shopping or restaurants yet we still felt away from it all. The kids enjoyed Taos ski Valley and Angel Fire. We loved the automatic fireplaces with timers, perfect for bedtime. Lovely southwest décor and furnishings. The owner was attentive and available for questions.
