About Johnny Duke

My wife and I are both educators. We bought Bear Haven primarily as a retreat to share with our sons. I grew up going to the Smoky Mountains on a semi-regular basis. Some of my favorite childhood memories are fall visits to see the leaves and nights walking the strip in Gatlinburg.

Johnny Duke purchased this chalet in 2006

Why Johnny Duke chose Gatlinburg

We love the location since my sons and I hike and fly-fish in the mountains, while my wife and daughter-in-law have access to unlimited shopping and bargain hunting in the area.

What makes this chalet unique

We love the tongue and groove paneling and the stone fireplaces. The deck is a nice place to relax under the shade of trees in the summer. While we have neighbors within sight, this is in an older section of Ski Mountains where the cabins are more spaced out.

Our Bear Haven Memories

  • 5 of 5

From East Coast (Asheville, NC, Knoxville, TN) to West Coast (San Diego, CA), the Basses met for vacation and made Bear Haven our home away from home.

It was more than we had hoped for or imagined. Everything we needed plus more was there. The nice clean cabin echoed the words "Welcome Home" when you unlocked the door.

The adults and grandkids enjoyed the pool table, hot tub, and swimming pool near by.

The hike and picnic in the mountains was so refreshing and our stroll downtown Gatlinburg was adventurous.

Our shared meals and board games around the table brought treasured memories to keep us smiling.

Owners Johnny and Vickie excel in customer service. We highly recommend this Vacation rental.

Great cabin for 2 family's

  • 5 of 5

Perfect size cabin for 7 people with good views off the porch and great amenities and also very close to ober gatlinburg. Couldn't find anything at all to complain about, except it would be nice if the driveway wasn't so steep and icy. Don't go down backwards and bring snow chains if you don't have a 4x4 during heavy snow times.

Bear Haven

  • 5 of 5

We have just come back from a trip to the mountains and truly enjoyed our experience @ Bear Haven. It was a beautiful cabin that lived up to our expectations. It was clean and well-maintained. We had enough room for all 6 of us and the baby. The Dukes were so easy to work with and were very helpful with all of our questions. We would definitely stay here again.

Perfect for the family!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is thoughtfully stocked with everything you need for a Smoky Mountain vacation with family. We had a 2, 8, and 12 year old and Grandma too! The area is quiet. The house is spacious and with four bedrooms everyone had plenty of room. The kids enjoyed the pool table and hot tub. The owners have provided conveniences like hand soap, laundry detergent and garbage bags. Located very close to the top of the ski mountain. We saw bears on several occasions in the driveway. My advice to renters is to carefully lock the garbage and follow the owner's driving directions. Our GPS sent us on a terrifying roller coaster. If you follow the owner's instructions, you will have no problems. We had a great stay and I would definitely recommend this cabin.

Very Quite and Cozy!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this cabin! The information that Johnny sent was fantastic! It is in a fabulous location. We were 5 minutes from downtown Gatlinburg and about 20 minutes from Pigeon Forge. All of the rooms are very cozy and there was plenty of room for all seven of us. One of the most exciting things was on the first day we were eating our dinner on the deck and a black bear smelled our food and walked down the hill right beside the deck. He walked around under the deck and then headed down the hill to the road.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this cabin and plan on returning in the future!

Wonderful Christmas Getaway! Loved it.

  • 5 of 5

We spent Christmas week at Bear Haven and it was a wonderful stay. We had two families, each with two teens. The cabin was perfect for hanging out, playing pool, watching TV and sitting in the hot tub. Other than the kitchen being too small for more than one person, I have zero issues with the cabin. Normally, kitchen size isn't a big deal, but we were making a traditional large Christmas dinner with turkey and trimmings. Otherwise, it had everything we needed. It was VERY clean, well appointed, and nicely situated less than a mile from Ober Gatlinburg. The owners were friendly, accessible, and made sure we were completely satisfied. Looking forward to staying here again sometime!!
