Becky Williams/Owner purchased this house in 2007
We needed a well earned break following our daughters wedding. Found it here in this idyllic spot. Beautiful home and surroundings. Bliss is champagne in the hot tub at midnight. I always wondered what John Denver sang about - so now I know. Thank you so much, we'll be back.
We had an excellent time in the very cosy and well equipped house on the river! It is very isolated and the hot tub under the stars by the river on a cold winter's night is beyond compare. The kitchen had basically everything we needed to make an elaborate New Year's Eve meal.
The hot tub definitely has a highly concentrated chlorine content so do be careful not to oversoak, and make sure you rinse off and moisturize afterwards - and don't wear silver jewelry! It will oxidize.
We loved our time here and hope to come back - perhaps at a time when we can boat around the Shenandoah and see the little town when it is open! The local convenience/country store is adorable and well run...and was open with longer hours than many of the local shops! There is also a Food Lion about 10 minutes away in Elkton that is really well stocked with anything you might need or have forgotten.
The house is well stocked, well maintained and VERY comfortable. The Owners obviously take pride in the place. The AC works great. If you are going with a group of people this is the place to be. The deck is nice and you will spend most of your time hanging out on it. The kayaks and canoes were needed and were constantly used. Fishing is good.
If you are looking for a secluded, quiet time, then you might want to look elsewhere. We were there right at the start of summer, so your experience may vary. Here's why: It is right in the town of Shenandoah and next to a public boat slip. With that comes a lot of people on this stretch of the river. It is the deepest part of the river right before a damn on the right for about a two mile stretch, so over the weekend boats, jet skis and kayaks were continually floating bye. Just letting people know that if you don't want to see other people this isn't the place. The traffic of water vehicles didn't bother us at all and if you have kids, they'll love it! Thank you for letting us stay at your place.
Our family had a fantastic time! The house is beautiful and well supplied with essentials for the stay. We enjoyed taking the canoe out. We also enjoyed Luray Caverns.
We had a lovely time and I can recommend this home. On the plus side, the location on the water, beautiful deck and hot tub under the stars were amazing. the kitchen was large and nicely equipped. The bedding was nice quality and the inside of the home was impeccably clean (and I am really picky about that). Whomever handles the cleaning does a great job.
To do a balanced review, I have to point out a negative about the property although don't give it too much emphasis. This is not something the owner can control so take it with a grain of salt, there is the train issue. The house is quite close to a working train yard. On Thursday morning, around 4am, it was active and it is on the hill immediately near the house. It was however, quite minimal over the weekend after that point and was not a factor in our comfort after that.
The peace and beauty of the waterfront location, combined with the high quality linens, furniture and sparkling cleanliness make this a home I would return to.
We (a mixed-gender group of five 30-somethings) spent a weekend here and our only regret was that we didn't book another day. We spent most of our time relaxing on the porch, and most of our nights in the hot tub. The direct river access was wonderful, perfect for canoeing or swimming at a moment's notice. We also loved the relative privacy, with no direct neighbors in most directions. We're definitely going to book again.
this is the second time I stayed in this wonderful home away from home, and my 3rd time is already scheduled. This time was the ladies' weekend. The house is big enough to spread out, and we felt pampered by all the effort that went into making the house welcoming. We spent time in the morning relaxing on the porch, reading, talking, and resting. In the afternoon we used the well-stocked kitchen and made wonderful, gourmet meals. In the evenings, we were back to the porch enjoying the hot tub and making s'mores. We did get out and about. I can recommend the Noon Whistle Pottery for a few mementos. It was exactly the weekend we needed.
