About Owner

Our story is a great one, we had a dream and we were lucky enough to have lived it for three years here in Costa Rica.

From buying our first home to having our first child we have nothing but great memories to take with us on the road of life.

Now we share our home so that others can have the chance to experience what we have even if just for a short while.

Owner purchased this villa in 2007

What makes this villa unique

On our first Costa Rican vacation we just happened to stumble upon this great property and we fell in love with it at first sight.

Just the spacious open porch was an immediate invite.

Since it is located towards the back of the compound there is more privacy and a lush green environment surrounding it.

The Titi monkeys love our porch also, they come around almost daily to see if there is a banana to steal from the table. They are endangered so feeding them is not allowed so that we do not pass any germs or bacteria that can harm them.

This is a perfect place to be one with nature or just watch it around you.

Happy vacationing!!!

Living at the Edge of the Jungle

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in Quepos, but it took a little getting used to. We had expected to meet the property manager, Eddie, but instead were met by his mother, Pia, who did not speak much English. The units had been closed up so were very musty and the lower unit smelled moldy.

The upper unit does not have a common living space other than the balcony, so eating and visiting is done there. Take bug spray for the evenings. Also there is no air unit for the kitchen area, so it becomes quite warm. There are no screens for the patio doors, so if you leave them open while cooking, the bugs come in.

The phone and internet were down when we got there. It was fixed after a day, but we were limited to emails as the service was too slow to load any sites.

The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. We saw a large male sloth, toucans, macaws, golden spider monkeys, and howler monkeys all from the balcony. The pool is communal but is clean and was a welcome respite after the beach or other activities. There is a large fence and gate surrounding the buildings (4?) and Pia is usually around, so it feels very safe. The location is less than 10 minutes from Manuel Antonio and just a few minutes from Quepos so there are lots of choices for dining and shopping is convenient.

A comfortable home “in the jungle”

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I, and our son, his wife and 1 year old son spent 9 days in Casa de Mariposa. The two floor building worked well for our group. Our son and his family slept in the upstairs unit, which has two rooms (and a kitchen – but no living area) and we slept in the downstairs unit (which is like a bachelor apartment with a small living area / kitchen). We all used the kitchen upstairs and greatly enjoyed the upstairs outside deck. The upstairs is quite well equipped. We were comfortable staying there, although a few things could be improved: the damaged wicker deck furniture fixed or replaced, one of the deck ceiling fans fixed (it wobbles a lot), a plug provided for the upstairs kitchen sink, the lower unit door fixed so that it closes without having to turn the deadbolt.

The building is in a small gated complex that is full of flora and fauna. We saw more animals just sitting on the deck that we saw on our hikes in area parks. Our most fun sighting when when a troop of squirrel monkeys ran across our roof and then one by one jumped down to a branch on a tree right in front of the deck. We also spotted big lizards, a sloth, macaws, toucans, etc.

We enjoyed the shared pool in the complex, although some days it had quite a bit of algae.

The on-site property management staff were friendly, although they didn’t speak English, so communication was a challenge. Even the neighbours were very nice – one boosted our battery when it died because I left the lights on. He appreciated the beers I gave him the next day.

The complex is located just south of Quepos and north of Manuel Antonio. We rented a car the whole time we stayed there, so we could do day trips. There’s not much within a reasonable walking distance.

We did an outing to the Manuel Antonio Park, which we enjoyed, but we enjoyed our outing to Rainmaker Conservation Park even more. The park was more isolated, had many fewer people, the scenery was awesome, and the hanging bridges were fun to walk over. We even went for a swim in a stream’s pool and climbed up to one of its waterfalls.

For one beach day, we spent some time on Playa Espadillia, a huge beach in Manuel Antonio, before the park. It has tons of fine sand (which can get very hot) and fun waves to play in.

We really enjoyed our stay at Casa de Mariposa and exploring the awesome nature in the complex and sites nearby.

Lovely place to stay

  • 5 of 5

This place was great. Loved everything about it. Very quiet area, filled with trees, a few sloths, monkeys, lizards, ... all usual Costa Rica animals. You can see them right from the porch. Very easy to get to Manuel Antonio park, and to Quepos. Managers can help you with tour arrangements too. Several really good restaurants within walking distance. Be sure to go to one of the larger Zip-line places and go Mangrove kayaking while you are there. We hated to leave.

Come for the wildlife!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Casa de Mariposa February 4-9, 2016. Here we saw the best wildlife of our stay in Manuel Antonio--better than in the parks. From the comfortable deck of the house, we observed a troop of howler monkeys, including babies clinging to adult backs; a playful group of squirrel monkeys jumping in the palms and cecropia tree, scarlet macaws, toucans, several humming birds, black squirrels and butterflies. For the best chance to see animals and birds, get up early (6:00 AM) to have coffee and breakfast with entertainment. And plan to be back on the deck for drinks by 5:00 PM. We were able to do this with fun trips each day (MA National Park, Rainmaker Park, Hacienda Baru in Dominical, and MA beach).

This house worked well for two couples. We each took a level with our own bedroom and bathroom. We cooked together in the upstairs kitchen and ate on the deck. The kitchen had everything we needed, including a crockpot in which we made black beans to have each day.

Keep in mind that there are always glitches in travel. We had a hard time locating the place even with a map. Once we found it, the property manager didn't have us listed as arriving that day so the house wasn't ready. However, it all worked out. We had a cold beer on the deck while the house was readied for us. We found the complex beautiful and well maintained and the neighbors friendly.

Note: stop at the store to pick up some toilet paper, trash bags, Clorox wipes, laundry detergent, and paper towels. This will help you maintain the house during your stay.

I highly recommend Casa de Mariposa for travelers interested in wildlife viewing and relaxing with friends!

Excellent place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Very well kept and taken care of and location is great right between Quepos and Manuel Antonio park/beaches. It is a multi property gated in condo, we felt very safe and the atmosphere was great, monkeys even came to visit. Bus stop is right outside too.

  • 5 of 5

My cousin and I stayed in Casa Mariposa for 4 nights. The house is clean, comfortable and so conveniently located, close to everything. Loved the swimming pool! Pia is the on site manager, she lives in Chaman, which is a gated community, she will greet you , give you the keys and make sure all is well, and if there's anything wrong she she will not give up until it's right, Agi, the owner will go out of her way to aid anyway possible, we needed batteries for TV remote and Agi called Pia and we had them in 15 mins. You can't go wrong with this place,
