Hilo Estate Rental Photos and Description

4 Bedrooms + Den - 4.5 Baths - (Sleeps 9)

Come enjoy a memorable vacation in a beautiful tropical setting. Mika Taki is an exceptionally lovely large home with two acres of tropical splendor, incuding a waterfall and pond for swimming. The property is private and peaceful.

Mika Taki is constantly updated. This includes high speed and wireless Internet service, and cable TV. Outdoors you will find a dining area, a large deck lounging area, a luxurious Jacuzzi, lovely gardens and paths to various water features of the property. There is also a screened-in lanai. We have created a mini private oasis for you - yet it lies less than 2 minutes from downtown Hilo.

Here is the layout of the house: 4 Bedrooms – all 4 ensuite, each with its own private bathroom. The master suite has a King size canopy bed and a beautiful bathroom with an ofuro (a Japanese soak tub.) The other three bedrooms all contain Queen size beds, each with a distinctive style and beauty of their own. The living room, which is very large, contains a comfy sitting area grouped around the lava rock fireplace. There are many Japanese decorations, including antiques. The floors are eucalyptus wood with oriental area rugs to compliment the furnishings. The gourmet kitchen is a dream. The kitchen comes fully equipped and stocked. All you need to do is bring your own fresh foods and beverages. Completing the layout is the TV/media room adjacent to the living room. This room also has a wet bar. Just outside is a screened-in lanai where you can sit and listen to the waterfalls below. A fifth half bath is provided, as well as a laundry room. From every room, you view the towering palm trees, the lush flowers and the abundant tropical vegetation. The home is on one level.

**Mika Taki is in a residential neighborhood and to be good neighbors we do not rent the house for large parties. We do not allow more than a total of 10 people on the property at any one time

About Sara/Jamie

We met in Hawaii, fell in love in Hawaii....and the rest is history. Now we get to share our good fortune with guests from around the world.

Why Sara/Jamie chose Hilo District

We are happy to have a wonderful home in Hawaii, and we love the Big Island, its many sights and its friendly people.

Hilo gives one the chance to get a feel of the 'real Hawaii.' The Farmers' Market in town is a riot of color from the many exotic fruits and flowers. There's just a special feeling one comes away with after exploring this unique area.

Amazing property managed by very thoughtful owners

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a stay at this heavenly place. Easily one of the best places we have ever stayed in and we've stayed in a very wide variety of places in 65+ countries. I'd give it 6 stars out of 5.

I'll try not to repeat the points of praise mentioned elsewhere, but here are the things we loved.

1. Attention to detail - like ear plugs left in every room for those who might be sensitive to the frogs at night, handyman contacts, clear descriptions of facilities and gadgets.

2. Spotlessly clean home throughout

3. Exceptionally well furnished - from extra pillows and sheets to snorkelling equipment, board games and kitchen utensils

4. Thoughtful starter packs for late night arrivals who may not have time to visit the supermarket

5. Exceptional communication throughout

Many thanks Sara and Jamie for sharing your lovely home with us and for being such exceptionally professional landlords.

The real Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

After a frantic 10 days, Mika Taki was our little oasis in the rainforest. What an amazing home with Japanese influence. Catered for seven adults easily and with loads of luxury - where else would you get to gave your own private waterfall! It was central to everything but would suggest you have access to a car. At night when the lights went off and the sounds of the rainforest could be heard, you really felt a thousand miles away from the hustle and bustle of life. We would highly recommend a stay at Mika Taki.

Breathtaking Japanese Style Home in the heart of Hilo

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this beautiful home for 5 nights and loved every moment. We had a party of 3 adults, 1 teenager, and 3 kids and we all fit comfortably together. Each bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and the entire house has huge windows allowing for a beautiful view. As most houses in Hawaii the focus is on natural lighting and the constant ocean breeze. There really is no need for A/C. The property is located in Hilo which had easy access to plenty of grocery stores, restaurants, and beaches. Rainbow Falls and the Kaumana Caves were really close by. It was easy to get to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from the property.

The only observations I would make is that the trek to the private waterfall is a little steep and slippery but well worth it once you get there. Also the Coqui frogs and the geckos love to serenade you at night. If you're a light sleeper there are boxes of ear plugs in every room. We easily fell asleep to them. Know that you are in a home that is surrounded by nature. We woke up to see little mongoose running around in the backyard and geckos patrolling the house trying to snatch up any critters they found. The solar hot water heater takes a minute to heat up but can handle multiple showers running at the same time.

Maki Taki ----beautiful, magical, healing ...

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Maki Taki was beautiful and magical and healing… I sense this home was created out of the labor of love by the owners, Jaime and Nori. The house was spacious and open and inviting, nestled in a private secluded forest replete with adventurous trails and amazing waterfalls. Its interior was crafted of beautiful quality wood and thoughtfully appointed with artistic, elegant and comfortable furnishings. At night, coqui frogs sang songs that lulled us to sleep. The morning after our first night stay at Maki Taki, I woke up refreshed and my husband commented that it had been the first time in many years he had been able to sleep through the night.

This was a happy time. Our family was here to attend and celebrate our youngest daughter’s graduation from University of Hawaii at Hilo. Our daughter, who brought us here, had visited Maki Taki two years earlier when a friend graduated and her family invited her to this home for dinner. Since then, our daughter had always hoped that one day, her family too would be able to experience Maki Taki when it was her turn to graduate…

Heaven on Earth

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with 2 friends for 3 nights and never wanted to leave. The house feels like home the minute you walk through the door.

Everything you could possibly need is provided with much consideration having been put into stocking the house. The decor is very stylish but homey with many flowers to brighten the house and interesting ornaments and knick knacks to pique your interest.

I love falling asleep to, and waking up with, the sounds of nature and the bullfrogs at night and birds in the morning certainly provided the music of the rainforest I enjoy. The uncovered and open louvred windows bring the outdoors in so you can never feel enclosed.

Take a walk into town and see some of the local area and plants - it's not far.

The walk down to the waterfall was a little slow but well worth the trip. The water was cold but refreshing and a dip in fresh natural water is a rarity in Australia so this was certainly a novelty for us.

I would definitely recommend Mika Taki as a home away from home for anyone visiting the island of Hawaii.

Photos cannot represent this property well!

  • 5 of 5

Our party of eight stayed at Miki Taki and it was perfect for us. This was our first trip renting a home so we had no idea whether it would live up to our expectations. The online photos were lovely and the reviews excellent, so we decided to take the plunge.

The photos here do not represent the property well. The home is warm, serene and inviting and far more spacious than a photo can capture. The home's design has one feeling they are outside, even when inside. There are huge walls of windows (no window coverings) completely filled with green foliage.

Because we had a baby with us, the floor plan worked out very well. One bedroom is separate from the others, and it was the right place to put the baby and his parents so the others would not be disturbed if the baby cried.

Communication with the owners was excellent. They answered questions within a few hours and encouraged us to ask more. They provided a crib, highchair and Pac 'n Play. The crib would have fit in any of the bedrooms. The screened in lanai was our favorite place to hang out - we could enjoy the tree frogs from inside.

We appreciated knowing the trip to the pond was risky. Some in our party were seniors with physical limitations, but even the capable members passed on the opportunity as the path was slippery with leaves from a torrential rain. No one felt our visit was incomplete by making that choice.

It was nice to have paper products and soaps included, as well as some basic pantry items left by previous guests. The place was very clean and nothing needed repair. The washer and dryer were relatively new.

In all, the home was nearly perfect. The setting is not only beautiful, but convenient to town. The Saturday farmer's market was fun - sadly we were headed out of town that morning so couldn't enjoy the beautiful produce. Don't miss the Moonstruck Patisserie a block from the market.

If anything could be improved, the snorkeling equipment has seen better days. Rent or buy if snorkeling is important to you. We saw turtles at Carlsmith beach, and Onekahakaha beach is perfect for very young children. One other comment - the lighting at Miki Taki is dim. While that added to the serene atmosphere and might not bother others, it was significant enough that everyone in our group considered it a problem. It made many indoor activities (reading, packing, finding your belongings) a challenge.

But, would we hesitate to return? Absolutely not!
