Overview

Pinehurst Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

Quiet, cozy, inspiring, art-filled: Fivespot is a relaxing destination for a week or weekend. Perfect for couples or small families, enjoy the books, the sauna and outdoor shower, the claw-foot bathtub, the fireplace, and lots of cozy pillows and throws.

Feeling creative? Add something to the chalkboard wall, or stroll to the hilltop behind the cabin and sketch the surrounding foothills. Several painters and writers have already used Fivespot as a personal artistic retreat - you can too!

There's comfort and convenience: a covered stone patio, gas bbq, kitchen with all the trimmings, and lots of outdoor space means you can cook and dine inside or out.

Year-round comfort and fun at Fivespot:

Summer is the high season in the Sierras, for good reason: the sun shines from June through October. Hiking trails are open, wildlife and wildflowers abound. But we locals enjoy the fall, winter, and spring even more: sun gives way to rain and snow, life quiets down, time to rest and renew. Fivespot is perfect for an off-season retreat. The road to the cabin is kept cleared of snow, and the road into the Parks is accessible if you have 4-wheel drive or chains (we can help you with that). The fireplace and sauna keep you cozy; you've got time to think, write, read, or just relax. It's a delightful time of year - please consider a visit!

Winter activities at and around Fivespot:

Winter is never far from Fivespot: at 4000' elevation, we get at least one substantial storm each year. If you are lucky enough to be here at the perfect moment, you can snowshoe right out the back door. But the cabin is also perfectly situated for near-certain winter adventures - it's just a 15 minute drive to the entrance of Kings Canyon National Park, where sequoias are blanketed in deep snow all winter. And Fivespot is located on a well-maintained state road, so getting here is easy. Snow play, snow shoeing, and cross-country skiing are these Parks' best winter activities.

About Mahalia LoMele

We are former New Yorkers (Brooklyn, to be precise) and artists. We moved to Pinehurst in 2003, bought the 1940's cabin next to our home in 2007, renovated it, and opened it as 'fivespot cabin' in 2008. Here's hoping you'll stay at our place next time you come to the Sierras!

Mahalia LoMele purchased this cabin in 2007

Why Mahalia LoMele chose Kings Canyon

Pinehurst was a flourishing logging community for decades. The Pinehurst Lodge, a short walk from fivespot, is a locally-owned and operated restaurant in a 100-year-old former sawmill. It continues to be a hub of activity for locals and visitors alike.

Cedarbrook, an early-20th century cabin community built by Mennonite families from nearby Reedley around a lovely year round stream, is a 10 minute walk away. Other nearby historical logging sites are Neff's Camp and Millwood.

Today, small cabins used as summer homes, rentals, and by full-time residents, are scattered throughout the forest. Pinehurst's year-round population is around 350.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved our three nights at Fivespot. A wonderful place to be. We loved the hummingbirds in the backyard very much.

And after our snow-walk in May, in Kings Canyon N.P., there was that great fireplace.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I just spent New Years in this wonderful cabin. I was a little concerned about booking a cabin in the mountains because I'm a 26-year-old, 100% city girl but this cabin matched every hotel that I have ever stayed in. The cabin had a perfect located with modern decor and appliances. It had the added ammenity of a fabulous sauna. The homeowners were very nice even after I broke a plate and even had cute little extras like microwave popcorn and ever variety of hot tea. We are planning another trip to this cabin and I have told all of my friends about it, WONDERFUL.

Great base for park adevntures

  • 5 of 5

We spent six days at Fivespot, exploring Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Parks. The location is great, if a bit remote, but is only about 10 miles from the park entrance. The cabin is lovely, eclectic, and is fully stocked with staples. After hiking on dusty trails, the washer and dryer was a real plus. And, the chalk board wall in the kitchen was a fun read. Notes from travelers all over the world, in various colors of chalk. Plenty of room for a couple, or a small family. Nice grounds, although the mosquito population made it difficult to be outside. Limited WiFi and no TV, which was a bonus. Added to the peace and quiet of the place. A nice place to come home to after a long, tiring day in the park.

The provided maps and extra information easily brought us right to the cabin door. And, if you are not a fan of driving about a half hour for dinner (our two favorites were Twin Valley Bar and Grill in Dunlap and Big Bear Pizza in Squaw Valley), by all means stop for groceries before you arrive. Closest stores are fully described in the pre arrival information.

Favorite hikes in the parks were Mist Falls (normally a busy trail, but we were here in early September after Labor Day which slimmed the crowded considerably), Hart Loop, and Mitchell Peak. Great views from Mitchell, but an altitude gain of over 2,000 feet in the three mile trek to the top. Lung buster for sure!

We would recommend Five Spot to any park traveler.

Five stars for Fivespot

  • 5 of 5

Fivespot was the perfect place to stay during our California adventure. It was such a lovely cottage in such a lovely position.

It was spotlessly clean, the kitchen was well equipped, the bathroom was excellent, the beds were comfy. Best of all were the outside porches, both front and back, where our family of four relaxed as the hummingbirds entertained.

Ideal for exploring Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park.

Nature, Art and Comfort

  • 5 of 5

We had such a lovely stay. After long days of hiking, the home was a little piece of heaven. Nature, art and comfort.

We enjoyed the sauna, porches, outside shower, large tub and access to a washer and dryer! The proximity to the restaurant was great for delicious dinners.

Coffee and breakfast with the backyard hummingbirds and quail were a delight - we also enjoyed a visit from you handsome cat - kept watch for us :-)

The proximity to the parks was terrific - we explored both Kings Canyon and Sequoia. If you need any supplies or gas take advantage of Hume Lake or Stoney Creek.

Have fun - you will love this cottage!

Magical cabin, close to Kings Canyon and Sequoia

  • 5 of 5

First, Mahalia is a gem. She informed us when we booked that because we had kids, they shouldn't be charged as adults and refunded some of our money. She called us the evening we arrived and asked us if we needed anything. And when our little one had an accident overnight, she and her husband were very understanding.

The cabin is a wonderful antidote to modern life. We enjoyed the hummingbirds at the feeder, the family of California quail with chicks that scurried away when we went out to the back veranda. The cabin is chock full of interesting books and knick-knacks. The kids and I loved the outdoor shower. At night, we went out to the hill in the back for star gazing.

Having stayed at both Three Rivers and here, there's no question in my mind that this is a better place to stay for a visit to both Kings Canyon and Sequoia. The drive from Pinehurst to the Park attractions was pretty easy (~20min). The drive from Three Rivers to Park attractions was longer (~50min) with lots of hairpin turns.

Needless to say, we hope to be back soon!

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Fivespot. It was the perfect base from which to explore Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. It's somewhat centrally located between the two which makes it easy to cover lots of ground. The cabin is cute with tons of character. We especially liked the outdoor shower with honeysuckle growing over the top. Sitting outside on the front porch or the back patio in the evening was incredibly relaxing. Would certainly come back and stay here again!

Few vacation cabins are as close to Kings Canyon National Park as Fivespot Cabin. A 15-minute drive to its entrance will bring you to the feet of giant sequoias, and an hour more will take you to the bottom of the breathtaking canyon itself. From there discover prime hiking trails, waterfalls, caves and meadows - all without the crowds of Yosemite.

Sequoia National Park might be at the top of your must-see list too. The entrance is the same as Kings Canyons - 15 minutes from fivespot. Then travel down Generals Highway to trailheads and memorable places such as Redwood Canyon, Lodgepole, Giant Forest, and Moro Rock.

Other Activities: Giant Sequoia Tree Viewing, Snowshoeing, Cross-Country Skiing

The cabin is cozy, but the outdoor lounging areas are spacious, so there's plenty of room for everyone. We use only natural, non-toxic cleaners, and all linens are 100% cotton. Although owners Bachrun and Mahalia LoMele live next door to the property and share a driveway, the cabins are on different elevations and retain their privacy. The LoMele's are happy to advise or assist, if necessary.
