I've lived in Hawaii since 1976. I have always lived on the Diamond Head side of the island.
In 2007, I was invited to dinner at my friend Ken's home in Kailua.
I looked forward to a leisurely drive through the Koolau mountain range, towering some 3150 feet in some areas above the valley floor, to Kailua....in 'the country.' No matter how many times I make this drive, I am struck by the diversity of the island and the breathtaking view when you emerge from the tunnels in the mountains and see the view of the ocean and northeast side of the island. I drove through the little town of Kailua and turned down a long driveway framed by lush Hawaiian plantings. I immediately felt the privacy of the property.
My first impression as I walked into the large entry room was the relaxing feeling of this lovely, open Hawaiian home. As I was shown around the home and property I remember remarking to Ken the house had a calming and peaceful presence.
The first night I spent in the home, with the ceiling fans slowly turning and the windows open, the sound of the ocean lulled me to sleep. I awoke to the tropical birds singing and was struck by the quietness of this side of the island and the neighborhood.
Julie purchased this house in 2011
Three years later, in April of 2011, I had the opportunity to buy the home. I love that the home has so many private areas, where people can spend time alone but be together on one property...out by the pool or in the spa, sitting in the garden area, relaxing in a bedroom with the windows open and the fan slowly turning or with the air conditioning cooling the room, relaxing in the large entry room while reading on the day bed, cooking in the large kitchen, or relaxing in the beautiful living room on the Hawaiian Punee (day bed) enjoying the beautiful Hawaiian gardens through the large windows. It is the perfect Hawaiian open air style home for multi generational families who are meeting to enjoy a vacation in 'paradise.' Imagine all this plus a beautiful white sandy beach with azure colored water only a 3-5 minute walk away! I enjoy sharing my home with my guests who are visiting the beautiful Hawaiian Islands!
Mahalo to Julie for being a welcoming, responsive host and renting us her clean, comfortable, & well-appointed home for our recent family trip to Oahu. Everything our family of 7 (5 adults, 2 grandchildren) needed was available from enough boogie boards and beach equipment for everyone to towels and seating. The well equipped kitchen had everything you might want except food which was available from grocery stores just a short drive away. We also used both the pool and hot tub each day to relax after a busy day. The game room had more things to do than we had time to enjoy.
With sandy bottomed Kailua Beach being a short walk away, we were able to enjoy the beach in the morning or evening and still have time to visit the normal tourist sites we scheduled each day. Kailua Town is on the windward side of the mountain range and is about an easy 30 minute drive from Honolulu & its attractions. Speed limits range from 25 to 35 for most of the roads on Oahu except for the interstates which are 45-55 so while the time is higher, the distances aren't so far. From Kailua to Turtle Bay on the North Shore for golf was about 31 miles but took an hour to get there. Pick up a guide book from the car rental agency which has maps of each area of Oahu (we used Hertz's). From Kailua you can go north to the North Shore (garlic shrimp places on the way - messy but great), south past several beaches like Hanauma Bay to eventually Waikiki (scenic drive) or over the mountain (3 Highways - try them all - Nu'uanu Pali Lookout is a must) to the Honolulu area.
In summary, we thoroughly enjoyed staying at Julie's home in Kailua and would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing, quiet location easily accessible to the major areas of Oahu. If you want the noise & chaos of Waikiki, this isn't the place for you. If, like us, you merely want to see Waikiki, then stay at Julie's in Kailua and take a drive there - just don't do so on the weekend as parking is virtually impossible to find.
The Peterson Family
The moment my husband and I walked through the living room doors we were so pleased. Beautiful open living room nicely decorated with track lighting and a gorgeous wood dining table. The kitchen is large and has every appliance you will need and nicely stocked. Master bedroom bed extremely comfortable. Both master bath and bedroom are large. Other 2 bedrooms and bath are average size. The rec room has a day bed and could be used for another bedroom but the beautiful living room also has a day bed .
The home gets some nice trade winds. We did not use the air conditioner very often. When we did it was super quiet. You could not really hear it. Also, no road noise. The whole property is quiet and private. The rec room has a fun small pool table, TV, toys, lots of boogie boards and every size of snorkel and fins to fit all sizes. Our grandkids would take the boards and walk to the beach, just mins away, and ride the waves until dark. Enjoyed the backyard pool. In it everyday and evening. Nice out door hot and cold running shower. Did not use the hot tub or the kayak. Golf was an easy 10 min. drive away. Waikiki 25 mins. North shore 25 mins. We felt at home and would have really liked to have stayed longer. Thank you Julie for taking such great care of your rental home.
Literally, our home away from home! Such a relaxing feeling from the moment you step into the house. A complete feeling of ALOHA! The open floor plan of the living area to the beautiful landscaped backyard and pool , our family of seven enjoyed every minute of our stay. I appreciate the cleanliness of house too! It is so convenient to be walking distance to Kalamas beach and Kailua town. We will be back again!
What an incredible place to spend a tropical vacation! Between the proximity to the beach, the backyard pool and hot tub, the clean and spacious living space, and the wonderfully themed decor, this house far exceeded my expectations. Our traveling party of 6 (2 children, 2 parents, 2 grandparents) found this place to be total perfection for our trip.
I want to underscore how nice it was to be so close to Kalama Beach Park -- just a few minutes from the door to the shore, even with small children. To be able to run back to the house to grab a snack or towel without getting into a car, and to be able to spend a little while at the beach without committing a whole day gave us a ton of flexibility.
But back to the house! Julie was a wonderful host, who was easily reachable and who had lots of information readily available for travelers. The house was fully stocked with anything you might need in a home away from home, including toys and games for the kids, plenty of towels, and a well-equipped kitchen. The backyard space was lush and inviting and we used the pool almost every day. The indoor space had Hawaiian or seaside details everywhere and an open-concept living/dining area, where we comfortably hosted a family dinner party for more than 20 people. (All our guests commented on how lovely the home was!) And if you're like me, you'll appreciate the bedroom air conditioning. It was hot and humid during our stay, and the AC kept us east-coasters sane and happy. :)
I don't know when we'll be back to Hawaii, but when we do return, we will definitely be staying here again!!
We really enjoyed our time in Kailua and at this vacation home. It was a short walk to the beautiful Kailua Beach, and the house came with all the equipment needed for a day by the ocean.
The home and grounds were clean and well-maintained, including the pool and hot tub. We didn't think we would use the pool much being so close to the beach, but it was very refreshing to take a dip in the evenings.
Julie met us at the house when we arrived and explained everything thoroughly. She provided lots of information on local restaurants and sight-seeing opportunities. We loved the town of Kailua, and would love to visit again. Great restaurants and shops...and the beautiful beach!
Everything you need to have a memorable Kailua vacation for both kids and adults... outside the house convenience is just down the road whether it be the beach, Kailua town for restaurants and groceries or the Lanikai Pillbox Hike trail entrance (just 2 miles from the house) for those looking for an amazing sunrise hike. The house had a fully stocked kitchen and we were able to eat in easily using the baking pans/dishes and pots and pans to cover off whatever cooking or baking needs you might have... we made two fruit crisps using the fresh fruits that were there upon arrival as welcome gifts... the only issue we had was that the rice cooker was a little old in the teeth and cooked unevenly... kind of an important appliance when the whole family eats rice every night;-) Ranch style dining table and koa furniture was a nice plus.
The outside pool was perfect for the kids following a day at the beach and the hot tub was great for the adults at night... the mini-pool table provided hours of entertainment although the surface was rather unleveled. The full stock of boogie boards, snorkels, masks and beach toys saved the usual last minute one-time purchases or rentals and was very much appreciated.
Washer and dryer were large capacity and relatively new and as any family with kids knows comes in particularly handy during a family vacation. We're not big TV watchers so not much to say about the number of TVs or what service was subscribed to.
All in all, wonderful vacation house! Would definitely consider returning again for our next Kailua trip.
