I've lived in Hawaii since 1976. I have always lived on the Diamond Head side of the island. In 2007, I was invited to dinner at my friend Ken's home in Kailua. I looked forward to a leisurely drive through the Koolau mountain range, towering some 3150 feet in some areas above the valley floor, to Kailua....in 'the country.' No matter how many times I make this drive, I am struck by the diversity of the island and the breathtaking view when you emerge from the tunnels in the mountains and see the view of the ocean and northeast side of the island. I drove through the little town of Kailua and turned down a long driveway framed by lush Hawaiian plantings. I immediately felt the privacy of the property. My first impression as I walked into the large entry room was the relaxing feeling of this lovely, open Hawaiian home. As I was shown around the home and property I remember remarking to Ken the house had a calming and peaceful presence. The first night I spent in the home, with the ceiling fans slowly turning and the windows open, the sound of the ocean lulled me to sleep. I awoke to the tropical birds singing and was struck by the quietness of this side of the island and the neighborhood.
Julie purchased this House in 2011
Why Julie chose Kailua
Three years later, in April of 2011, I had the opportunity to buy the home. I love that the home has so many private areas, where people can spend time alone but be together on one property...out by the pool or in the spa, sitting in the garden area, relaxing in a bedroom with the windows open and the fan slowly turning or with the air conditioning cooling the room, relaxing in the large entry room while reading on the day bed, cooking in the large kitchen, or relaxing in the beautiful living room on the Hawaiian Punee (day bed) enjoying the beautiful Hawaiian gardens through the large windows. It is the perfect Hawaiian open air style home for multi generational families who are meeting to enjoy a vacation in 'paradise.' Imagine all this plus a beautiful white sandy beach with azure colored water only a 3-5 minute walk away! I enjoy sharing my home with my guests who are visiting the beautiful Hawaiian Islands!

This House Has It All!
This house is the epitome of gracious island living and perfect for bringing together family or friends under one roof. The decor is beautiful, the space well laid out. But it was all the amenities that really delighted our group. From the pool and hot tub, to the billiards table and kayak, to the outdoor grill and all the thoughtfully collected beach things (snorkels, coolers, chairs, mats), there wasn't a thing we needed that the house didn't provide. Location is perfect-- tucked away and private but easy walk to the beach. For those who don't mind something a touch longer, you can walk to town, too. Everything was spotless and the house is well maintained. We especially appreciated the A/C for the hotter July days. We booked the house for our wedding so that I could be with my parents and bridesmaids for the week leading into the big day. At the end of the week my (new) husband said, "Of all the great decisions made this week, renting this house is the best one."
Perfectly appointed house in cute neighborhood surrounded by relaxing vibes
My family and I had a wonderful time at Julie's house. Unlike other houses I have used in the past, this one had everything you could possibly need...most importantly in the kitchen. And not like the, "oh these people clearly live here situation," no, Julie clearly took the time and energy to provide all of things you would want in a house. The area is super cool too if you've never been. If you want to feel and live like a local, this is your spot. If you're looking for a crowded city or big waves, look elsewhere...but that should be clear. The pictures do not do the house justice, super cool!
Great house...very comfortable to live in.
Great house and very kind property owner. I definitely would recommend and would rent again. Kailua is the best spot to be on the island in my opinion. It is non touristy and pretty down home. Hawaiians are gracious and kind people.
Paradise in Kailua.
There were six of us staying in Julie's home; we had plenty of room and enjoyed the accommodations. The rec room was an added bonus and gave everyone some privacy when needed. The beach amenities were great, and the cart that was supplied gave us an easy time transporting everything (boogie boards, coolers, mats, towels, toys, chairs etc.--all supplied from Julie) on the short walk to the best beach ever. Our granddaughter particularly enjoyed the privacy of the pool and the adults loved the hot tub. We used the outside shower often.
The inside of the house had everything imaginable. The beds were super comfortable and the kitchen was equipped with all that was needed; the kitchen was big enough that we could all be working on a meal, appetizers, etc. at the same time, We cooked most of our meals and even barbecued a few times. The house was in great condition and very, very clean.
Thank you Julie for contributing to our wonderful vacation.
Wonderful house in a beautiful location!
You can't beat this house. It's very spacious and easily fit our extended family (5 adults + 2 teens). Julie is an amazing host and very thoughtful. The place is stocked with everything you might want from kitchen appliances to beach supplies. It's a 2 block walk to the beach, less than a mile to town and easy access to the airport.
Julie was super easy to work with and very responsive (email, text, etc...). And so thoughtful! Would definitely recommend and looking forward to a return visit!
Lovely, comfortable home close to beach
Loved this house - spotless, lots of light, attractive decor, incredible outdoor spaces. Game room, pool & spa were bonuses. Only 1 1/2 blocks to beach. 15 minute walk to store/cafe - good morning coffee. Thanks, Julie.
Only drawback was the neighbors who occasionally did some loud yelling.
