|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
Anchored on the rocky coastline of an ancient coral reef, within a short walking distance of two beautiful white sand beaches on the Caribbean sea, the villa, Casa Caribe offers all the traditional charm of Mexico; red tiled roofs, the rustle of palm leaves in the sea breeze, and riotous stars, all with the breathtaking view of the ocean or jungle from every window.
Hop on a plane to Cancun, rent a car, and drive one hour south to Akumal, and find yourself in the low key paradise you've been looking for. Does swimming or snorkeling in an aquarium sound good? A few minutes walk to Yalku Lagoon is recommended on a daily basis to refresh your sense of natural living.
There's world class snorkeling and scuba diving anywhere along the 250 mile reef; some of the best right out the back door! It won't take long to find a sea turtle in the water or a nest on the shore, as Akumal means 'Place of the Turtle' in Mayan. While you're sipping a 'cold one,' and munching on chips, homemade salsa, and ceviche, the kids will discover the pizza parlor and ice cream vendor.
Akumal, with it's beautiful beaches, is small, clean, environmentally aware, and just minutes away from Mayan ruins, caves, underground rivers, golf courses, and jungle explorations. Dive shops, great restaurants, and a grocery store are walking distance from the house. This is the land of white sugar sand, reef outcroppings, and exotic wildlife, set on the turquoise coast of your dreams!
Casa Caribe is a two story, walled villa, offering security and complete privacy. The main house is 2500 square feet and decorated in Mexican-style, with beautiful, hand-carved furniture and original artwork. The master is upstairs, with oceanside balcony and roof viewing. The other two bedrooms and adjoining baths, are downstairs, along with the living room, dining room, and full kitchen. The furnished back porch is seaside and private, while the front garden/patio has a pool and large deck area with arbor, lounge chairs, and gas grill. The guest house at the front of the property is one bedroom with adjoining bath, living room, and small kitchen, and can sleep an additional three people. This is a wonderful home for a family or group of friends, with ceiling fans throughout, air conditioned bedrooms, maid service six days a week, and a gardener/handy man at your service.

I am Denise Koval and I have been a horticulturist for 35 years and enjoy all the organic sciences. My husband, Roger Burton is a sales consultant and a musician here in Dallas, Texas. We enjoy the tropics, especially the tropical oceans. We are restored with beautiful, natural settings, the sound of the wind and waves, and the flora and fauna. We spend a good deal of our tropical time walking beaches and swimming the coral reefs. We love the food of the tropics; fresh seafood, fruit, and vegetables. We are facinated with different cultures, traditions, cuisine, and don't mind the challenge of a new language.
Roger Burton purchased this villa in 2000
We chose Akumal, Mexico for it's quite village atmosphere. Akumal has only a single line of homes along the water, the georgous Caribean Sea, and the 5th largest barrier reef in the world just off shore. We find the Mayans sweet, serving, and generous by nature. Their culture and architecture are fastinating. We can still find a deserted beach, yet enjoy so many conveniences. Until you've seen the Milky Way on a moonless night or the Persaides meteor shower on a late summer evening, you have missed something large. And then there are things as simple as moonlight on water and the rustle of palm leaves with your toes in the sand.
Casa Caribe is a fully modernized, 40 year old home designed by one of the Yucatan's most famous architects, Jose Moreno. Some of the walls of the house and the pool deck are constructed from smooth coral rocks gathered from the site. The entire ocean side of the house, upstairs and down is glass doors that open to allow the sea breeze and the sound of the waves in. On a mild day you can walk out the back door and go for a swim over Dick's reef or walk a few doors north and swim the reef at Half Moon Bay, or take a 10 minute stroll to Akumal Bay and swim with the turtles or just relax on the beautiful white sand beach. There is a Mayan village very close by, small grocery stores, delightfully quaint restaurants, and a farmers market in the town square. Our staff has been with us for many years and will see that your stay is enjoyable. Whether you never leave the house, or travel out to explore ruins, cenotes, beaches, the jungle or the eco parks of the area, you are sure to have marvelous memories.
What a beautiful spot! Casa Caribe has such a wonderful view of the ocean and Devine ocean breezes that roll through the whole house.
The beach at Xpu Ha is pristine and quiet. 40 pesos a person if you take the road by Xpu Ha restaurant sign. A lot of amenities are private and lots of lounge chairs with a diner minimum but nobody can stop you laying down a towel!
Happy hour at Turtle Bay. 2 for 1 margaritas. A+ fish tacos.
The tamarind margarita at La Buena Vidal - the food is nothing too special but they have swings and a crows nest, so why not?
Rent bikes! A reasonable cost for the week and everything in Akumal is bike able.
Que Onda - Italian restaurant in North Akumal near Yal Ku Lagoon. As Brooklyn dwelling Jersey - Italian pasta in Mexico would never have been my first choice. But - I was put in my place! Go and order the Maribel. The pasta is handmade, the ambiance is lovely, the service is first rate.
Yal Ku Lagoon for a peaceful, low key, nearby snorkel.
Coba! Climbing to the top of the highest structure is a breathtaking and important experience.
La Lunita - food wasn't bad but so expensive.
Cueva Del Pescador - we got lots of recommendations but nobody was really satisfied - best dish though was the pulpo al ajillo.
Lol Ha - great location, plenty of beer but go elsewhere to eat.
Enjoy your trip! I know we did!
We loved this location! House is very nice with an open layout, and great oceanfront views. The staff (Christina and Luis) were very nice. We would recommend this property to our friends as a great vacation rental.
The home is far from the rental home cliché. all three bedrooms were well equipped with great bathrooms and bedrooms and individual vent less air conditioners. The bedrooms were strategically located away from one another. The separate house or Casita was a treat as well. The view of the ocean was spectacular. The kitchen was equipped with amenities you needed, however we found that we would eat breakfast at the house and eat out for the rest of our meals. We also found the location on Akumal to be favorable as well. I say that because it allowed us to walk to dinner, towards what I would describe as town. It also allowed us the walk towards the other end of Akumal as well. It was much easier for us to park and walk to almost anywhere rather than deal with a short drive and parking.
You see there were 9 of us and it fit very well. our kids (14 -18_ could walk out the door and explore, and feel and be safe.
The landscaping and overall look of the home is exotic and well groomed.
We did explore the lagoon at the one end of Akumal, that was very cool. we also explored nearby cenotes which might have been a highlight of the trip.
we eat at El Pescador, which I highly recommend for great seafood, margaritas and they hooked us up with a fishing charter which was on time and we caught some fish.
I found that Roger was great to communicate with, he was very responsive. Brett the local caregiver was right there and very responsive with text responses. we enjoyed a dinner prepared by Christina.
I would recommend it highly for the vacationer who wants to get away for the all inclusive resort, gather with others all under sort of two roofs and wants to explore. I would like to get back. As a matter of fact we e mailed Roger during our stay to see if we could get an extension to our stay.
We just returned from a week at Casa Caribe and we enjoyed it very much. The house was in great condition and looked even better than in the photos. The room upstairs was absolutely heaven and it was lovely to listen to the waves as you are falling asleep. Christina and Luis were super helpful with anything we needed. Some of our favorite activities were to go to the beach clubs up in Tulum and check out the local cenotes. We also really enjoyed Coba, we were early before the tour buses got there and we had the place to ourselves. Pretty amazing! I would really recommend having a car here, it opens up lots of fun opportunities though we did walk every night to dinner.
My husband&I stayed here for 2 weeks on our honeymoon and it was perfection! The home is beautiful and so spacious. Christina was so helpful and kept the home very clean during our stay. We really enjoyed the meal she and her husband cooked for us-delicious!! We wandered down the road both ways and found neat little restaurants and shops. We really enjoyed snorkeling at the beach and saw quite a few sea turtles! Our stay was relaxing and wonderful and we cannot wait to come back now that we have a family. The private pool and ample space in the home is really conducive for families. Overall fabulous experience!!
Casa Caribe is a charming villa in beautiful, quiet Akumal and I have enjoyed my visits there many times. It sits on the old reef between two sandy beaches both accessible for swimming & snorkeling. It is beautifully furnished, has all the amenities you could want and you will be well attended by long time staff, Luis and Christina. Rhett, the property manager, is happy to give you all the info you could want about where to go and what to see in the area. You can easily walk anywhere in Akumal - but watch your step for hermit crabs on the road after dark. If you don't want to eat at the local restaurants (I recommend Que Onda, La Lunita and Turtle Bay) then go to the town plaza for weekly market or across the road to the village for fresh fruit & veggies. My must sees and must dos are snorkeling the reef and area cenotes, driving down to town of Tulum for a little shopping, lunch and beach time and visiting the turtle sanctuary. Or, grab a book, enjoy the sunrise on the seaside patio, or in the shade by the pool in the afternoon. The stars of the Milky Way feel almost touchable and if you can visit during a meteor shower - spectacular! I can hardly wait to plan my next visit.
Casa Caribe was perfect for our family! Our two grandchildren loved the pool, hunting for hermit crabs, snorkeling and swimming the beaches. We enjoyed relaxing seaside on the patio or the hammock. The villa is well equipped and very comfortable. It is close (walking distance) to the beaches and restaurants but also very private. Christina and Luis are delightful and took great care of everything for us. Christina also prepared a wonderful meal for us and it was our favorite of the trip. Our favorite restaurants were La Lunita (french), Oue Onda (Italian), Turtle Bay (pastries and breakfast), Lol Ha (beach bar-restaurant) and La Buena Vida (beach bar-restaurant), which are all in Akumal. We also loved La Mezzanine (Tai) and Zama (local fare) on the beach in Tulum. We visited the ruins in Tulum and also Coba, which was magnificant. We went to several cenotes, including Gande Cenote (on the way to Coba) and El Eden (on the way to Playa del Carmen). We loved the turtle sanctuary at Xca Cel (no hotels or houses). Another great beach is Xpuha. Both are great for swimming or snorkeling. Akumal Bay is where you can snorkel with the sea turtles and it is amazing! Also, Yal Ku Lagoon, in Akumal is a beautiful and easy snorkel with multitudes of fish and no waves at all. The house is open and airy and the sea breeze is always delightful. The owner of the house was easy to work with and gave us all the information we asked for during the reservation process. The manager in Akumal, Rhett, was also very helpful and informative. This is a wonderful house to vacation with family or friends and we would love to return again!
