About Roger Burton
My name is Roger Burton, and I am a retired musician in Dallas, Texas. My wife, Denise Koval, also retired, has been a horticulturist for 35 years and enjoys all the organic sciences. We enjoy the tropics, especially the tropical oceans. We are restored with beautiful, natural settings, the sound of the wind and waves, and the flora and fauna. We spend a good deal of our tropical time walking beaches and swimming the coral reefs. We love the food of the tropics; fresh seafood, fruit, and vegetables. We are fascinated with different cultures, traditions, cuisine, and don't mind the challenge of a new language.
Roger Burton purchased this House in 2000
Why Roger Burton chose Akumal
We chose Akumal, Mexico for it's quite village atmosphere. Akumal has only a single line of homes along the water, the georgous Caribean Sea, and the 5th largest barrier reef in the world just off shore. We find the Mayans sweet, serving, and generous by nature. Their culture and architecture are fastinating. We can still find a deserted beach, yet enjoy so many conveniences. Until you've seen the Milky Way on a moonless night or the Persaides meteor shower on a late summer evening, you have missed something large. And then there are things as simple as moonlight on water and the rustle of palm leaves with your toes in the sand.
What makes this House unique
Casa Caribe is a fully modernized, 40 year old home designed by one of the Yucatan's most famous architects, Jose Moreno. Some of the walls of the house and the pool deck are constructed from smooth coral rocks gathered from the site. The entire ocean side of the house, upstairs and down is glass doors that open to allow the sea breeze and the sound of the waves in. On a mild day you can walk out the back door to steps cut in the rocks a few doors down, and go for a swim or snorkel over Dick's reef or walk a few doors north and swim the reef at Half Moon Bay, or take a 10 minute stroll to Akumal Bay and swim with the turtles or just relax on the beautiful white sand beach. There is a Mayan village very close by, small grocery stores, delightfully quaint restaurants, and a farmers market in the town square. Our staff has been with us for many years and will see that your stay is enjoyable. Whether you never leave the house, or travel out to explore ruins, cenotes, beaches, the jungle or the eco parks of the area, you are sure to have marvelous memories.

The house was clean and beautiful, Luis and Christina maintained the house and premises daily. Christina also cooked for us one night, which was wonderful! Rhett, the house manager, was very helpful and attentive. We loved the little pool also! Would definitely recommend for families or larger groups.
Thank you Irene! I'm glad you had fun!
Large, comfortable house- fantastic ocean view! Thanks for a fun week!
Really Great House
The house worked well for our family of five. We needed only use the bedrooms in the main house and did not use the casita. The house is well-appointed, spacious, and sunny. The kitchen was well supplied for cooking meals.
We spent parts of many days just hanging at the house enjoying the living room, the sitting areas in front of the house with the view of the water, and the pool in back.
The home is about 30 minutes from the main strip in Tulum which offers more restaurants choices and shopping options that you could ever see in one vacation. It was great having our house at the get-away from the busy Tulum scene.
We visited the Coba ruins (better and shadier than Tulum), the underground caves at Aktum Chen, and played golf at Riveria Maya, all within a reasonable drive. We also went on a sunset sail with the Akumal Dive Shop which is just a short walk away.
The only negative about the house was the intermittent WIFI.
Thanks for a great stay.
Stunning sunrises, spacious home, special service.
We had the most amazing time at Casa Caribe; the building and grounds are beautiful, and maintained so daily by Christina and Luis. The morning sunrises were a real treat offering us glorious colors and sounds to enjoy before breakfast on the patio and planning the days activities. We enjoyed ourselves snorkeling at the Yal Ku Lagoon, on the beach at Akumal, and in several nearby Cenotes - Azul, Eden, and Casa amoung them, and saw the ruins at Muyil and Tulum. The Pool was a fantastic spot to cool off in and refresh after all the heat and excitment of the day.
Luis and Christina were great and offered advice on the local Cenotes. The manager Rhett, was invaluable in also giving us tips on what to see and where to go as well things to know to help us navigate our first trip to Mexico.
There was a minor problem with a shower head which we reported to Rhett and the problem was fixed the next day.
I would thoroughly recommend this place. Roger and Denise, your place is a treasure, a real gift and the happy memories from this trip will give us joy for many a year to come.
Thanks so much, Jane! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and I look forward to having you back you in the future!
Plenty of space and taken care of like family
We were very privileged to stay at Casa Caribe for a week with our family of 9. My mother in law stayed with us for 1 night here as well, so there were 10 of us. We all fit into the house just fine, as there is plenty of space. Having the extra front house worked out great for our teenage boys to have their own space and not keep us up playing video games at night.
The views that the house offers is really amazing. You have the beautiful ocean view in the back and the jungle feel in the front of the house, the best of both worlds. The kids enjoyed looking at lizards, exploring the tide pools and watching the "blow hole" right outside the house.
The house was well taken care of. It was clean and had everything we needed there. We had an issue with the stove not working they had someone there within hours to get it fixed. The housekeeper Christina is the sweetest thing ever, and we were truly sad to say goodbye to her. You must have her cook dinner for you for at least one night, her cooking is absolutely amazing.
Rhett was a huge help as well and he told us all the things we should know about the area, what to be careful of, and where was the best place to do whatever it was we wanted to do. He was only a text message away if we needed any help or advice about anything. This was a blessing to us since we had never been to Mexico.
The house is perfectly located in the middle of the everything which was perfect for all the local exploring we wanted to do. We are looking forward to visiting Casa Caribe once again in the future with our family!
Thank you for treating us like family during our stay!!
Quiet Oceanfront Retreat
We had a great week at Casa Caribe in Akumal. We enjoyed being close enough to Akumal to walk to and from restaurants and stores, yet far enough for privacy and quiet. It was great having a maid and a gardener to take care of the place, and they kept everything very clean. Any problems with the casa were dealt with promptly even on New Years Day. We loved having lots of room for our group to spread out, 4 bedrooms, each with their own bathrooms. Yet there was lots of room for us to gather for meals or games, or a dip in the pool. If we were heading to the area again with a large group, we would definitely book this Casa.
We didn't have a car, but enjoyed walking and taking the Colectivo to sites. (Only 35 pesos to Tulum, 40 to Playa del Carmen) 20 minute walk to Yal Ku lagoon so we went early in the morning (pink sign side) before the tours start arriving, left, then returned at the end of the day after most tours left. Also a short walk to Akumal Dive Centre for the turtle snorkel and to La Pura Vida for beachfront bar/restaurant on Half Moon Bay.
