Uniquely Private Oceanfront Villa in Akumal - Casa Caribe

Bedrooms 4
Space 2,500 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

Villa, 4 Bedrooms w/ Detached Unit, 4 Baths, (Sleeps 9)

Anchored on the rocky coastline of an ancient coral reef, within a short walking distance of two beautiful white sand beaches on the Caribbean sea, the villa, Casa Caribe offers all the traditional charm of Mexico; red tiled roofs, the rustle of palm leaves in the sea breeze, and riotous stars, all with the breathtaking view of the ocean or jungle from every window.

Hop on a plane to Cancun, rent a car, and drive one hour south to Akumal, and find yourself in the low key paradise you've been looking for. Does swimming or snorkeling in an aquarium sound good? A few minutes walk to Yalku Lagoon is recommended on a daily basis to refresh your sense of natural living.

There's world class snorkeling and scuba diving anywhere along the 250 mile reef; some of the best right out the back door! It won't take long to find a sea turtle in the water or a nest on the shore, as Akumal means 'Place of the Turtle' in Mayan. While you're sipping a 'cold one,' and munching on chips, homemade salsa, and ceviche, the kids will discover the pizza parlor and ice cream vendor.

Akumal, with it's beautiful beaches, is small, clean, environmentally aware, and just minutes away from Mayan ruins, caves, underground rivers, golf courses, and jungle explorations. Dive shops, great restaurants, and a grocery store are walking distance from the house. This is the land of white sugar sand, reef outcroppings, and exotic wildlife, set on the turquoise coast of your dreams!

Casa Caribe is a two story, walled villa, offering security and complete privacy. The main house is 2500 square feet and decorated in Mexican-style, with beautiful, hand-carved furniture and original artwork. The master is upstairs, with oceanside balcony and roof viewing. The other two bedrooms and adjoining baths, are downstairs, along with the living room, dining room, and full kitchen. The furnished back porch is seaside and private, while the front garden/patio has a pool and large deck area with arbor, lounge chairs, and gas grill. The guest house (casita) at the front of the property is one bedroom with adjoining bath, living room, and small kitchen, and can sleep an additional three people (one on a couch). The pool is small but private, and very refreshing after a fun day at the beach. Our grandkids love it! This is a wonderful home for a family or group of friends, with ceiling fans throughout, air conditioned bedrooms, maid service six days a week, and a gardener/handy man at your service.

Hot sun, cool shade, beautiful beaches, and sea breeze in abundance... Sound good? Get in touch with us....

About Roger Burton

My name is Roger Burton, and I am a sales consultant and musician in Dallas, Texas. My wife, Denise Koval, has been a horticulturist for 35 years and enjoys all the organic sciences. We enjoy the tropics, especially the tropical oceans. We are restored with beautiful, natural settings, the sound of the wind and waves, and the flora and fauna. We spend a good deal of our tropical time walking beaches and swimming the coral reefs. We love the food of the tropics; fresh seafood, fruit, and vegetables. We are facinated with different cultures, traditions, cuisine, and don't mind the challenge of a new language.

Roger Burton purchased this house in 2000

Why Roger Burton chose Akumal

We chose Akumal, Mexico for it's quite village atmosphere. Akumal has only a single line of homes along the water, the georgous Caribean Sea, and the 5th largest barrier reef in the world just off shore. We find the Mayans sweet, serving, and generous by nature. Their culture and architecture are fastinating. We can still find a deserted beach, yet enjoy so many conveniences. Until you've seen the Milky Way on a moonless night or the Persaides meteor shower on a late summer evening, you have missed something large. And then there are things as simple as moonlight on water and the rustle of palm leaves with your toes in the sand.

What makes this house unique

Casa Caribe is a fully modernized, 40 year old home designed by one of the Yucatan's most famous architects, Jose Moreno. Some of the walls of the house and the pool deck are constructed from smooth coral rocks gathered from the site. The entire ocean side of the house, upstairs and down is glass doors that open to allow the sea breeze and the sound of the waves in. On a mild day you can walk out the back door and go for a swim over Dick's reef or walk a few doors north and swim the reef at Half Moon Bay, or take a 10 minute stroll to Akumal Bay and swim with the turtles or just relax on the beautiful white sand beach. There is a Mayan village very close by, small grocery stores, delightfully quaint restaurants, and a farmers market in the town square. Our staff has been with us for many years and will see that your stay is enjoyable. Whether you never leave the house, or travel out to explore ruins, cenotes, beaches, the jungle or the eco parks of the area, you are sure to have marvelous memories.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a beautiful spot! Casa Caribe has such a wonderful view of the ocean and Devine ocean breezes that roll through the whole house.

We recommend:

The beach at Xpu Ha is pristine and quiet. 40 pesos a person if you take the road by Xpu Ha restaurant sign. A lot of amenities are private and lots of lounge chairs with a diner minimum but nobody can stop you laying down a towel!

Happy hour at Turtle Bay. 2 for 1 margaritas. A+ fish tacos.

The tamarind margarita at La Buena Vidal - the food is nothing too special but they have swings and a crows nest, so why not?

Rent bikes! A reasonable cost for the week and everything in Akumal is bike able.

Que Onda - Italian restaurant in North Akumal near Yal Ku Lagoon. As Brooklyn dwelling Jersey - Italian pasta in Mexico would never have been my first choice. But - I was put in my place! Go and order the Maribel. The pasta is handmade, the ambiance is lovely, the service is first rate.

Yal Ku Lagoon for a peaceful, low key, nearby snorkel.

Coba! Climbing to the top of the highest structure is a breathtaking and important experience.

Skip able:

La Lunita - food wasn't bad but so expensive.

Cueva Del Pescador - we got lots of recommendations but nobody was really satisfied - best dish though was the pulpo al ajillo.

Lol Ha - great location, plenty of beer but go elsewhere to eat.

Enjoy your trip! I know we did!

Casa Caribe: great location, stunning views, beautiful landscape, comfortable, clean; MUCHO GUSTO!

  • 5 of 5

One of three places we rented for our family vacation to Akumal. The hosts are great; Rhett, the property manager is helpful but not overbearing, he connected us with a local guide for a tour of Rancho Santa Cruz cenote (awesome) and and a place to buy fresh seafood for our Easter BBQ. Christina the maid is a doll and Luise the grounds keeper is also very kind, be prepared to tip both at the end of your stay. The view from the patio and master balcony is just amazing. The villa and the casita (which is also very comfortable) are well stocked, all the essentials for beach going, cooking in or on the poolside gas grill, ample linnens and purified drinking water. Don’t miss the blow hole right out back on the reef, snorkeling on Half Moon Bay in front of La Buena Vida Restaurant (we ate here every day, yummm!!) Yalku Lagoon or morning coffee and sticky buns at Turtle Bay Bakery... .

Comfortable and Relaxing Villa

  • 4 of 5

Our stay in this villa included 7 of us. We found this Villa to be mostly perfect for our family of 7 adults. We were well taken care of by Christina and found Rett, the property manager , to be extremely helpful and friendly. Christina, even cooked a great meal for us one night. We were an active group and out most days exploring the area or for meals so we spend very little time just hanging out, though we did do some and found it comfortable. Loved the morning sun rise and hangout outside at the front of the house. We were meant to use the guest house but found it to be to musty smelling to be uncomfortable for sleeping. We also thought we had a beech front, so were disappointed that it is very rocky and too dangerous to go for a swim as the waves were to strong to get back in without getting smashed against the rocks. A beautiful spot though.

This place was just perfect for our group of 8. We had a wonderful time. The staff was very friendly, never got in our way. The home and location are unbelievably beautiful. Most times the listings makes things look better than the actual place. Not the case here, the pictures do not do justice for the beauty of the spot. Thanks for letting us share your home!

Amazing Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Casa Caribe much later than we expected on our first night, only to find the lights on in the house, air conditioning on in each bedroom and everything neat and clean. Very welcoming. Our week was filled with amazing adventures and great food, all easily accessible from the convenient location of the house. We enjoyed the sunrise each morning and the gorgeous view of the water from the patio. The house has all the basics we needed, as we ate breakfast and lunch in.

The maid, Cristina and gardener, Luis, don’t speak much English, but are very nice and most helpful. Our family of ten, ranging in age from 9 to 69 made many wonderful memories here.

The trip to Akumal was outstanding! Casa Caribe was a perfect place to relax and unwind. The house was perfect for me, my brother and 3 of out buddies. The open concept design with all the windows, sliding doors keeped a nice air flow of the sea breeze and hearing the waves crash on the shore was very soothing. The view of the ocean from the back patio or the upper level was very cool. We saw lots of iguanas and hermit crabs around the house and the flowers, trees and plants are amazing. Having a house keeper, gardener and manager was very nice to keep everything clean and Rhett the manager was very helpful in giving us suggestions on where to go. We went to Tulum Ruins which was outstanding history lesson plus a beautiful view of the coastline from the cliffs. Went to Cenote Christalina, which is natural cool spring feed waters and was like swimming in an aquarium with all different colored fish. The snorting was outstanding there and at the beaches where we saw sea turtles, sting rays and a really cool wall of fish. We ate fresh fish daily which was easy with the local restaurants and bars close to the house. This trip was a dream come true and the week we spent was totally amazing, I plan on going back and highly recommend Casa Caribe!

Fabulous Experience!!!

  • 5 of 5

My brother, myself and 3 friends spent a fun filled week at Casa Caribe and had a blast! The grounds were gorgeous, the views were amazing and the house was open and breezy....perfect for the 5 of us. Luis and Christina, the gardener and housekeeper took good care of all our needs around the house. Rhett, the manager was very helpful in giving us recommendations on the area. The beach at Xca Xel was pristine and the water is so beautiful! Tulum ruins were awe inspiring and the beaches there are amazing as well. Went to Cenote Cristalina and swam in the cristal clear fresh water rising out of the limestone caves. We snorkeled in Akumal Bay and swam with sea turtles and saw a huge ball of fish with a barracuda in the middle! We ate fresh fish most every day, and the restaurants in Akumal are excellent...Lol Ha, La Cueva, Turtle Bay, La Lunita, Que Onda, and La Buena Vida (which has tree houses and bar swings). The best part though, was just relaxing at the house and pool and enjoying the peace of this beautiful place. I highly recommend Casa Caribe and I will return!
