About the property

Two level House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Our home is on the ocean, protected by a lava wall and tide pools with an incredible 270-degree view looking north to Kailua-Kona and south to Kahalu'u Park on Keauhou Bay. Views of the ocean and gorgeous sunsets can be seen from every room in the house. The porch is a family-favorite for breakfast, lunch, reading, napping, and sunset dining. Excursion boats, deep sea fishing and snorkel boats and spinner dolphins pass directly in front of our home. During the winter months, migrating and breaching humpback whales are seen from the porch.

The upstairs has an open, full kitchen with granite counter tops and bamboo flooring which opens to a dining room and living room. Cooks in the kitchen can view the ocean and mountains while cooking. Upstairs has a master bedroom with queen bed and bath. Two bedrooms - one with king bed and the other with two double beds - are downstairs. The downstairs bedrooms share a large tiled bathroom with a huge shower with double heads. Both bedrooms open out through sliders into the garden and ocean. All three bedrooms have ocean views while lying in bed.

The most-popular picnic and snorkel beach of Kahalu'u Park is 1/2 mile south. Body surfing and surfer activities are found at White or Magic Sands Beach, 1/2 mile north. Off the front lava rocks, one can drop into the water to scuba, snorkel or kayak. Masks and snorkels, towels, boogie boards, fishing equipment, beach chairs, hammocks, portable BBQ, coolers are provided.

We have cable TV upstairs and down, as well as internet.

Our home is on a double lot on the ocean so you'll have a bit more privacy and, if you have kids, they have a grass yard to play around on.

About Tim or Misako Canby

My father visited the Big Island first in 1928. He started looking for his dream home int 1959 and settled on the humble abode in 1962. I started coming to Hawaii in 1962 and through the years have both worked as an engineer for OTEC and vacationed in Hawaii. Management of the home has now evolved to me and Misako originally from Hiroshima Prefecture. We enjoy the correspondence with guest many of whom return every year. Why Tim or Misako Canby chose Kailua-Kona

This property is ocean front and huge! There is a rock beach space between the house and the water. Ancient Hawaiians made this the point there fishing base which is evident from the many mortars carved into the rocks. The point provides a safe entry and exit from the water. The view from the porch is 180 degrees of 100% nature. The site is old Hawaii. The house is a classic Hawaiian / Japanese influenced single wall beach home style built in 1948 by Earnest Kabota, whose home was in Hilo. Earnest enjoyed the lifestyle, weather and fishing in Kona. Across the street towards the mountains (Mauka) is a undeveloped 7 acre parcel that provides a natural view from the kitchen. Parrots often roost in the trees there. A family of Grouse is often seen and heard.

What makes this house unique

The view, sounds and feeling is very calming and relaxing from the moment of arrival. A coral and lava stepping stone path by the side of the house leads through a wall opening and out to the ocean. The lava flow extends about 200 feet out to a point which one can stand on and look down at the fish swimming. It's easy to jump into the water and swim in front of the house to look at fish. Many commercial site seeing post often congregate off in front of the house because this is where dolphins often rest and play.

At ocean edge. Private driveway. Very private surroundings on double lot with large lawn and garden. Site of former Hawaiian settlement with old Hawaiian dry stack walls. Trees for hanging hammocks. Tide pools and easy access into water for snorkeling and kayaking.

Can't beat this spot

This was my first visit to the lovely Big Island so I had no idea where the best location to stay was and I must say we got really lucky with this place. The location is prime; literally right on the water and close enough to the restaurants and attractions yet not so close that you get all of the noise & foot traffic that comes along with being near the entertainment.

It's important to understand that this house is older and has history as it has been in the owner's family since the 60s so you must respect the things that come with older places. Still, it has great character, plenty of parking, towels, silverware, snorkel gear, and just about everything you need to enjoy your time in beautiful Kona.

Tim was great to work with and the house was in expected shape upon entrance.

So while this isn't the Four Seasons, if you want a quiet getaway where all you can hear are the crashing waves as you sit and watch the cruise ships disembark for the night, you've found your spot.

I will be remembering this place for future visits to Kona as we really appreciated our stay.

Dolphins Galore

We spent 4 glorious weeks at this home and enjoyed it immensely. The sheer numbers of dolphin and whale sightings from the front porch was mind blowing. The owner was very accommodating as was his housekeeper.

The surf was high most days, so the waves were crashing a lot of the time so some might find it noisy. This also made it difficult to enter the water at the house. The yard is rough and difficult to walk in for anyone with mobility issues. But it is a great location for a great holiday. Easy access to public transportation in case your rental is not available!!

Not a good choice for people with disabilities but otherwise a great choice. Aloha.

Owner's Response: Kona is on the calmer or lee side of the island. High surf conditions generally occur for short periods of time in the winter. Kahaluu Beach Park about 1/2 mile south can be used during these periods. I always walk with and enter the water at the house wearing short or cut off fins. All walkways and surface around the house are natural. They consist of grass, gravel, worn lava stepping stones and broken worn coral washed up.

Vintage Hawaii

We loved this comfortable classic Hawaiian style home with an unbeatable oceanfront location. The very large lot affords exceptional privacy. The only negative feature is that the 2 bedrooms downstairs can be accessed only by an outside staircase and they do have a bit of a "basement" feel although they are both attractive and well appointed. The house is incredibly well stocked with beach equipment and the kitchen is fully equipped for serious cooking. Very comfortable and very "homey" place to enjoy Kona.

Da Slippah Ladies Retreat

This beach house was perfect for us ladies to relax and adventure at the ocean's side. We enjoyed the sounds of the ocean as well as what it had to offer, like fishing, night divers, honu, sting rays swimming by, spectacular sunsets etc. The house was very comfortable, keep in mind it's a beach house, an awesome beach house with everything you need. I would recommend it to everyone. If you have young children, make sure you are with them at the ocean. Fun, fun, fun! Thank-you very much!

P.S. the housekeeper was there in a jiffy when we had a problem that we caused

Our experience started with exceptional communication and service from the owner. Everything about the yellow house was perfect for our family...enough bedrooms for privacy as well as great spaces for everyone to gather. The porch was our favorite! Such a special place for lasting memories:-)

OOPS! This is the review I meant to send

Hate to rain on other reviews, not sure we even stayed in the same house that they did, but other than the grand view from the lanai and the house being well stocked and clean, it was otherwise a disappointment.

1) Their ad does not state that 2 of the 3 bdrm's are downstairs and you have to go outside, open a padlock to gain entrance. Once downstairs, you are unable to sleep with sliding doors open for a breeze as the screens do not lock. It was 86-87 every day for the 2 weeks we were there. I called the owner and he told me to go to Target, buy a fan and he would reimburse. No $ yet.

2) Be careful using the shower downstairs. It’s a great shower, but it has slick ceramic file and it slopes toward the drain. I wrenched my knee in this shower and spent 1 day using ice.

3) The slider upstairs is old and doesn’t have a lock. There are holes drilled through

both doors with a pin to insert to keep it locked. Upon our arrival, the pin was

broken and we used a small screwdriver to stick through the hole to lock

4) Ceiling fan in living room is so old, the finish has come off it it, the fan blades.

5) The ad says you can see the mountains and ocean from inside the house. This is

partially true. To see mountain, look past the guardrail, highway, and peek above . the treeline

6).The bdrm upstairs is noisy for sleeping esp. weekends, because of traffic.

Owner told me otherwise when I asked about noise.

7) The window frames in living room are rotting away due to “humidity” as well.

( 8 Paint is peeling from the ceiling in upstairs bathroom. The upstairs toilet

had no wax seal and moves freely on the floor. If you don’t put it in exact spot,

There is slight sewage smell.

I could show/tell more, but this is more than enough. I would only advise you that sometimes things aren’t as they appear to be. P.S. One of the boards on the lanai is loose, so be careful.
