Our custom built, 1600 sf cabin, which we affectionately refer to as 'The Fishing Shack', was completed in the fall of 2008. An additional 350 sf studio apartment was completed in 2013. The property is located on the Madison River, known for its majestic beauty and world class fly fishing. The cabin is a gorgeous, 40 minute drive to the entrance of Yellowstone National Park and about an hour to the winter hot spot, Big Sky Ski Resort. With its fabulous location, reclaimed barnwood floors, custom kitchen, 3 flat screen TVs, a Jotul wood-burning stove, and floor to ceiling windows, it is a magical vacation spot certain to deliver year round fun.
The master suite has a queen bed with pillow top mattress, flat screen TV, French doors opening to a 5 person Bullfrog Jacuzzi Tub overlooking the river, and a custom built pebble shower with dual shower heads (including a rain head). There are two bedrooms upstairs, each with log bunk beds (twin on top & queen below). Open the windows and let the smell of the mountains and the sound of the river lull you to sleep. The open loft has a cozy seating area, a third flat screen TV with DVD player, and Game Cube system for the kids (and the kids at heart). Directly on the river, you will find a large fire pit perfect for staying warm and making s'mores while watching the fishermen in your family catch that big brown just feet away.
Our cabin is located 30 minutes from Ennis and 35 minutes from the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It is situated in a friendly residential community with about six other homes and delightful neighbors. It is across the river from a Forest Service campground and a short walk to the world famous 'Grizzly Bar & Grill' (you must sample their delightful wine selection).
Our location is perfect for year round Montana fun and adventure. In the winter, spend your days skiing the famed slopes of Big Sky Ski Resort, snowmobiling in West Yellowstone, cross country skiing on miles of pristine trails, watching the bald eagles soar above the river while soaking in the jacuzzi, or simply enjoying the beauty of the Madison while curled up with a good book by the wood burning stove. Fill the long summer days with activities such as fishing from the property, floating the Madison, exploring Yellowstone National Park, hiking beautiful mountain trails, horseback riding, listening to live music while sipping local wines and soaking in the Norris Hot Springs, experiencing an authentic Montana rodeo or riding the antique railway in historic Virginia City.
We hope you enjoy our cabin as much as we do, and we look forward to sharing the beauty of Montana with you.

Hello Dave, Here are my comments added to your listing… All true “We have always wanted to Visit Montana, and this cabin was the icing on the cake! The pictures on this site do not do it justice! It is not only a beautiful place to stay but a great place to relax. We enjoyed the river, lots of fishing from the property and rafting down the river. The drive to Yellowstone was only 35 minutes and well worth it! The owners were wonderful to deal with; my deposit was returned very promptly. I am definitely staying there again. We have been lucky enough to travel all over the world and this was one of the BEST vacations we have taken!!” Will talk to you In March to book again next summer J Thanks,Robbin
Heather was great to work with. Nice riverfront cabin with all the modern amenities. Pretty tough to beat winding down in the hot tub after a long day in waders fighting those Madison browns! Our group of 4 can't wait to do it again next year.
The 'Fishing Shack' is unequivocally one of the best homes I've stayed in through VRBO. This is the rare option that is outfitted to a level of quality and comfort that exceeds "vacation rental" standards. It feels like the owners poured their heart and soul into outfitting the house and then decided to generously share it with the world.
Every aspect of the home (kitchen, deck, outdoor area, hot tub, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.) is exceptional. A group of 8 would be completely comfortable in the space, and families with children could comfortably fit even more. The views across the river are fantastic, and the home's location is perfect: Close to Ennis, the Madison range and river, Yellowstone, Hebgen, etc. This area is a hidden gem compared to the more common Yellowstone outposts like Gardiner and West Yellowstone.
The 'Fishing Shack' is recommended in every way: Do yourself a favor and stay here!
Best review we can give is to say we'd return in a heart beat. Wonderful home, very comfortable and well taken care of.
Our group of families will long cherish the memories of our stay at "the Shack." Moonlight dinners on the deck serenaded by the Madison, fly fishing just a few steps away, cooking together in the we'll appointed kitchen and tucking into cosy beds with soft linens every night. Heather and Dave responded quickly to our (very few) questions. The drive to the park can seem long, but it's worth it to be away from touristy, congested West Yellowstone. Don't miss Norris Hot Springs!
Our family of 8 stayed here for 3 nights in June. We drove the 45 minutes to the West Yellowstone entrance daily. The road hugs the Madison River and it is gorgeous. Since we aren't fishermen, we enjoyed watching others fish in the river right off the deck of the house. My son and daughter saw an eagle swoop down and snag a fish; that was memorable. 2 adults stayed in the studio and the 6 others were in the main house. Plenty of space for all!
We were happy to find condiments in the frig and some spices in the cabinet. We replaced the plastic wrap and left some of our baggies in the drawer. This is a huge help when traveling and I'm happy that home owners are providing coffee filters, foil and plastic wrap and often salt and pepper.
We used the fire pit for s'mores one night! Loved that!
For dinner one night, two of our group went to the Grizzly Bar and Grille and the rest of us ate at the pizza place in W. Yellowstone. Raves for both restaurants.
This house was well situated and very spacious for our family. Our neighbor at home, who is a fly fisherman, was envious when he heard about our visit to the Fishing Shack.
I looked long and hard for the right house to accommodate our family (including in-laws) on our trip out West. This house was absolutely perfect! We were also able to utilize the room over the garage which was ideal. I would echo all of the previous positive comments. The kitchen was stocked, the beds comfortable and the house just gorgeous. Although this location was pretty secluded, that was just what I needed to get away from the chaos of work. I envisioned having my coffee on the back porch every morning overlooking the river and it was like a little slice of heaven. We went into Yellowstone on 3 days, to Virginia City one day, and up to Norris Hot Springs and Ennis on one day. The drive to Yellowstone was about 40 minutes but incredibly beautiful. I just can't say enough positive things about this rental. We would highly recommend it to friends and wouldn't be surprised if we end up there again in the future!
