About Caroline Whitney, Trustee and Manager

Our family has enjoyed coming to Mattapoisett for 5 generations. With family and friends, sailing, tennis, swimming and excursions to the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket have been some of our favorite activities. Most of us came from Boston, New York and New Jersey to spend the entire summer here. We sailed Beetle Cats and Herreshoff 12's for fun and twice a week in races, often competing with other clubs around Buzzard's Bay. The family still has local roots in Massachusetts, but we connect with others who live in California, Montana, Georgia, and as far away as Argentina.

Caroline Whitney, Trustee and Manager purchased this house in 1953

Why Caroline Whitney, Trustee and Manager chose Mattapoisett

There is something that continues to draw all of us to Mattapoisett, particularly Bow Mansion, our house. The intimate community of the town and the tranquil surroundings immediately attracts friends, who return many times over for over 60 years, although family has summered in Mattapoisett for much, much longer. The house is simply furnished, comfortable and functional, with no pretensions of being anything but a family summer house with some amusing old-fashioned touches. We gather together to enjoy each others' company and are not concerned about fancy, modern furniture and equipment, etc. only that it is functional.

What makes this house unique

The neighborhood is a quiet and unpretentious where neighbors are friends going back a few generations. Our house is not on a busy street, so it is reasonably safe for children. Bicycling is popular. The garden is great for games and on rainy days there is plenty of room indoors for activities.. The porch of the Big House is always a favorite place to eat and chat, while enjoying the views of the harbor and all of its activities. The Little House balcony off the Master Bedroom is equally pleasant for viewing the harbor and bay. Cool breezes in the evenings waft through the trees. Conclusively, it is a great place for all ages to relax, play, go off on day excursions or just find a quiet corner to read and write.

Large festivities or loud noise such as boom boxes which interfere with our neighbors pleasures, most especially in the evenings is not allowed. It is preferable to entertain a large group with extra guests elsewhere in the immediate area. No events may take place without previous presentation to the owners with specific detailed plans and would have to be subject to the approval of all family members. That includes party tents and any other such structures. These may not be erected in the garden at any time without prior consultation and approval. Penalties will be imposed for disregard of the above.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This was our second year and again we had a wonderful time. It is an ideal location for a family, where you want to be near the Cape without Cape traffic. The house is terrific for a large family who want to spend time with each other, with a large lawn and private beach. The house is not modernized in decor or amenities, but for a summer stay, it is works. There are plenty of tableware, linens, fans, and porch furniture. It is obvious that the owners are making improvements whenever it is possible.

Like staying at Grandma's House

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the Bow Mansion for a week for a family reunion of 21 adults and 2 children. Half of us were from the U.S. and half from Switzerland. This house was one of very few that could accommodate such a large crew! IT turned out to be the perfect place for us. The house is huge with many interesting nooks and crannies, "secret" stairways and interesting family photos of the former owner's family. The house is well-used and holds no pretense which was perfect for our group. It reminded us all of a grandmother's cottage with comfy couches, the smell of old wood, and a huge dining table that nearly fit all of us. The kitchen was well equipped and we shared meal-making every night, filling the house with wonderful smells. It was not fancy, but clean and comfortable. The ocean-side porch provided respite from the heat as it nearly always was blessed with ocean breezes. The beach was small but perfect for swimming, even for the children: not too deep, no big waves. We spent a lot of time playing games on the huge lawn, and just relaxing with a book on the porch was a favored activity. Our only complaint had to do with the clean-up at the end. We were required to put on clean sheets, which were provided and we were happy to do, but we also had to take the used sheets and towels to the laundry, and pay for getting them washed ($90) , in addition to the $600 cleaning fee. This seemed a little expensive, given the cost of the rental. This was really our only complaint. We would definitely stay here again. Next time we'd bring a kayak or a canoe!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review, which so reflects the pleasures our family enjoy in a house that has known five generations of gatherings, fast coming up to six. The ability to spread everyone out among 14 bedrooms and more than ample living room spaces (6 in all), 2 dining rooms, 2 kitchens and laundries plus a porch and a deck allow for many different activities as well as quiet corners to suit everyone. It is a big house to maintain, yet the happiness of being together offsets the necessities of cleaning fees for a large house and constant maintenance costs. Bow Mansion is a house full of family memories and those of visitors who have returned for more than one summer.

Coastal Southeastern New England charm at its best

  • 5 of 5

This year, while planning our annual August get together with friends, we decided we wanted a place near our roots in Southeastern Massachusetts, as many of us had grown up in nearby New Bedford. As we all live in different places now, we were looking for a house large enough for 10 adults and 10+ kids where we could just hang out and spend some great bonding time together. We couldn't have found a better spot than the Bow Mansion, nestled in the small village of Mattapoisett. The house, built many decades ago by a former ship builder, has unbelievable charm, with a maze like floor plan of rooms and architectural history that just keeps surprising you with every corner you turn. Each of us, adults and kids alike, were just amazed with all the new discoveries as we walked the house for the first time. So while the house may not have the amenities of new construction (no AC, old style windows, etc), the spacious common areas and historic charm make you forget all that.

Waking up each morning and soaking in the Mattapoisett harbor with its variety of sail and speed boats along the calm water, was a lasting memory. We spent allot of time, morning and night, chatting and relaxing on the large, outside covered porch which became our favorite meeting spot; the 2 person swing on the porch was always occupied. And while there was ample room for that many people to congregate inside, the peaceful view of the harbor was too good to pass. The private beach directly in front of the house made kayaking and other water games easy and memorable, while the large yard allowed ample space for volleyball, football, wiffleball and soccer games. While the nearby area has some quaint restaurants and site seeing, we stayed almost exclusively on the property, with grocery and beverage stores very conveniently closeby. The property owner was very pleasant and helpful throughout the entire process, answering questions and providing details about the house. So while we have traditionally gone to a different location each year, we've most likely found our annual get away. Everyone had an amazing experience.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind response about our family property. You expressed very well what our house and grounds are all about and the area in which it is located. It certainly exudes a certain spirit that many people sense, which stimulates relaxation and happiness for all ages, despite the eccentricities of the house itself.

Perfect house for a multi-generational Vacation

  • 4 of 5

The house is both elegant and easy going, with a very well-equipted kitchen for meal preparation. Love the large family dining room for home dinners and the delightful huge veranda overlooking the bay. Mattapoisett is a wonderfully historic maritime village/town. Renters who desire luxurious, modern appointments would be disappointed. The house is a time wharp as is the town, no night life, trendy shops, or hotels, but all essentials within a short drive.

Owner's Response: Mattapoiset is a small village near New Bedford. For night life of any sort, it would be our advice to explore New Bedford, which must have a variety of entertainment, let alone museums and other places to visit during the day.

Magical times in Mattapoisett

  • 5 of 5

I planned a big family reunion for the summer of 2014 and found Bow Mansion to be perfect for such an occasion. The house was spacious, well kept, and had lots of bedrooms. All the listed amenities were in good working order and we wanted for nothing during our stay. My brother took advantage of the well-stocked kitchens when he prepared eight roasted chickens and four strawberry rhubarb pies for the Sunday night dinner. We also got a lot of use out of the washers/dryers during the last two days of our stay since we opted to wash all the sheets and towels ourselves.

The living and dining rooms were fine (especially for the more reserved in our group) but the grounds and private beach were my favorite features of the property. The weather was warm and sunny with cool nights so we spent most of our time on the front porch singing songs and telling stories. Occasionally, someone would wonder off to stroll the gardens, paddle around the harbor, or stop by the creamy for a lobster roll and some ice cream. Who could ask for a better week? Our excursions took us to various museums, breweries and ball parks. In other words, we enjoyed all the benefits of the Cape without actually being stranded out there in the traffic. This was also a critical factor for those in my family who traveled from afar and needed quick access to the train stations and airports in Providence and Boston.

In planning this reunion, I had lots of questions but the owner was very helpful and was easily reached by email or cell phone. I would highly recommend this house and the Mattapoisett area. I can't wait until our next visit!

Excellent location and adequate room

  • 3 of 5

We stayed here with a very large group and the house can definitely accomodate many families together. The location is wonderful, close to town and also easy access to the water. Perfect for kids. My only complaint with the property is the condition of the house. The house is very dusty, some rooms smell strongly of mold and the furnishings are in need of repair. New mattresses and fresh bedding would be a bonus. We were there when the weather was cool and raining. There were no working fireplaces and no heat so this made for a very cold week. The property could be a fantastic rental but it definitely needs some attention.

Owner's Response: Four generations of the same family have enjoyed spending time here. The present owners have been slowly upgrading this summer home year by year, taking on a project to maintain the house and to make improvements for the family and for our guests. We do care for the comfort of everyone, and we do welcome constructive, non-derogatory comments. On the other hand, we have no control of the weather. The house is closed all winter. A thorough spring cleaning is always executed. Nevertheless, since the property is situated right on the water, it is much more susceptible to damp weather. Thus it does mean that in late May and early June, if there has been rainy, foggy weather, the Big House can feel a bit damp and musty. The Little House, because it is smaller does dry out quicker.

Outdoor wonderland, indoor problems

  • 2 of 5

Our stay in Mattapoisett for a family reunion was filled with ups and downs. The outdoor space was lovely. The front porch is expansive and conducive to long chats and watching the sunsets. We brought a few extra chairs because although the house sleeps 19 there was not a lot of lawn furniture. Beach access was great and it was fun to watch the many bunnies and hedgehogs munching on the clover. The yard was big enough for bocce tournaments and a volleyball set. The indoors was a bit of a disappointment. The first morning we discovered a squirrel in the house. My husband thought maybe he had come in through an open window. The next night, with all the windows secured, he paid another visit and ransacked the kitchen destroying food. We finally plugged a hole in the door with a rag and although he didn't make his way inside again he did hang around the garbage area and front porch. The owners should seek some assistance in ridding the house of this menace. The other area of concern was comfort. The downstairs common area was certainly big enough but there was almost no comfortable seating. Some of the furniture has rips. The beds were a mixed bag, some comfortable, some "prison beds". All in all we had a great family gathering that could have been more comfortable.

Owner's Response: Our house is shared not only with renters but with many family members. The furniture is typical of a summer house used by several generations since before 1950. Yes, some of it must be removed and other pieces need repair or renewal, which has to be done from year to year. There are also items damaged by tenants. The beds are a mixed bag as some like it hard and some like it soft in the family, but again, we are striving to compromise, each year. The squirrel is a new event for us this year. He or she seems to be very tame, however it cannot be one of our house guests, thus measures are being taken to remove this uninvited intruder.

Buzzards Bay is excellent for sailing and motor cruising, There is nearly always a good south west wind by mid-day, if not before. The harbor is good for small boat sailing. Fishing charters can be found in New Bedford and Marion. On a good day one can make a round trip across Buzzards Bay to Woodshole and back in a motor boat.

For sightseeing, it is worth visiting the Whaling Museum and historic district, the zoo and Botanical Gardens in New Bedford, Edaville Railroad Park, Carver MA. is fun for young children. Bird watching, walking, bicycle routes and scenic drives abound.

Trips to Rhode Island are short, and worth it, to visit the Blithewold house and botanical garden in Bristol, or to go to Newport, Rhode Island, as well as to vineyards in the area.

In the other direction, it is easy to drive to Cape Cod for the day. There are ferries to Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and Cuttyhunk in New Bedford. Other ferries go to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket from Woodshole or Hyannis, Massachusetts, should you want to explore those areas.

Sports: For golfers there are public courses in Mattapoisett and the surrounding towns - best found in the local telephone directory or online to suit what you are looking for. Public tennis courts are on route 6 in Marion.

Sailing or power boating is a must. Rentals can be found in New Bedford and Marion and some in Mattapoisett. If you bring your own craft bigger than a rowboat, kayak or laser, you will have to make arrangements to dock it at the Mattapoisett Boatyard or make arrangements with the Mattapoisett Harbor Master.

ATM/banks, Post Office, Laundromat, are in town and some local places for groceries. The super markets we use are not far away in Fairhaven, and New Bedford.

If you need to get to a hospital you would go either to New Bedford or Wareham, which are both about a twenty minute drive from Mattapoisett.
