ARCHITECTURAL STYLE

The home was designed by Chu+Gooding Architects, known for their work on the Getty Museum. Modern design, great location, and great service

This beautifully designed modern home is conveniently located six blocks from the Main Street retail district, beach, and Santa Monica farmers' market. Convenient access to the Santa Monica Promenade and the 10.

The house is sited on the lot to provide front and side yards, with windows carefully placed to provide daylight and sightlines of the sky and bamboo around the perimeter of the property. The living room and attached side yards provide a wonderful space to relax in or entertain guests. Wonderful architectural details throughout the house.

The house was very clean and well maintained. Robert (the property manager) was very helpful in showing the home, handling the deposit and payment, and delivering the keys.

We enjoyed preparing meals in the kitchen, but note that there's no microwave or coffee maker.

Owner's Response: YES of course we have a Coffee Maker with filters and even a French Press. We choose not to use a micro-wave for health reasons, but one can still heat food.

Incredible house and location

We have stayed in many condos, hotels and houses in the Santa Monica area, for work and for holidays, and this is one of our favorites. The design of the home is stunning, and the home has great amenities. But unlike many architecturally significant homes, we found it to be comfortable and kid-friendly. The location was great, on a quiet street but close to beach, Main Street and PCH/Hwy 10. The fenced in off street parking stall was great piece of mind. Robert made everything easy, and was accessible if we had questions and truly wanted our stay to be great. Thanks for everything Robert. We'll be back.

Designer's Dream

a| This house is absolutely gorgeous. I was torn at times between going to the beach (which is literally 6 blocks away), heading to the shops+cafe which are 5 blocks away and lounging at the house. It's the perfect combination of contemporary zen+cozy. Very tasteful and elegant.

b| The location is fantastic. Grocery stores, shops, boutiques, restaurants are within 5 blocks.

b| I appreciated the precision in detail - custom made kitchen table, extra outlets for chargers, netflix ready to go, HBO films, beautiful landscaping and an extraordinary library of books to flip through.

c| Robert was very thorough with us and very kind about working with us to meet our needs and even reminded on Monday morning about street cleaning and where to move the cars.

d| Parking is included. There's a spot for two cars to park next to the house behind a private gate.

e| The home is private and surrounded by beautiful bamboo. There's a lovely outdoor space where one is able to practice yoga, exercise or meditate in seclusion

f| Finally, the master bedroom is stunning and open. There's a custom made bed and the large windows allow for sunlight to stream through in the morning.

God, I wish we lived in Southern California. Our stay at the Getty designer house in Santa Monica was amazing and we can't wait to come back.

The beach, the yoga, and the farmer's market are all in within walking distance of the house... didn't realized we were staying in such a great neighborhood!

Great X'mas shopping and restaurants on Abbott Kinney in Venice. And a fantastic $ 50 massage, just walking distance from the house.

At night we dined at the Venice Ale House and watched the sunset.

When we got back John and I really enjoyed the fireplace, sipping wine and watching movies on the flat sceen.

The upstairs / downstairs house design was perfect for the two of us. We even used the office and wifi throughout the house.

The manager, Robert, was very helpful. He told us about so many different and interesting places to visit.

Only wish we were able to stay another week!

Stay elsewhere

Our recent stay at this property was our worst experience so far in our experience of vacation rentals. First, there are some positives: The house is centrally located and in a safe neighborhood; Whole Foods, the Santa Monica Pier, Montana Avenue, other attractions and major freeways are minutes away by car. There is on-site parking. The actual structure that is the house and its landscaping are very nice. Now the many negatives: The photos do not show any of the stained, ripped or broken furniture that greeted us on our arrival. After being told by the agent Robert that the bed we would be sleeping on was brand new (we hadn't asked, he just offered this information), we removed the sheets for a washing and discovered a filthy mattress. Personal items belonging to the house's owner such as toiletries, food, magazines, etc. littered the counters, shelves, drawers and cabinets in such abundance that we felt like we were trespassing. It was the sort of disarray that might be okay if staying with a friend or relative for free but not if you're paying for accommodations. The house advertises as a two bedroom. Instead, a bed has been placed in the living room across from the couch. As I told the agent Robert in an email sent after we returned home: Just as I'm sure owners hope that renters won't mistreat their homes, we would hope that our comfort, peace of mind and health are being looked after, too - if for no other reason than that it is the right thing to do. The best places that we have stayed, the places that we would happily return to and refer to others, are places where the owners have done just that.

We would never recommend this house to anyone.

Owner's Response: We are sorry to hear our last guests were unhappy with their recent stay at the Retreat House. The owner just purchased and had delivered a beautiful custom made Japanese style, maple wood bed to match the new maple wood floors throughout the master bedroom upstairs. The House was completely cleaned by our maid, including all linens, and we even left the guests a complimentary welcome fresh fruit bowl and bottle of wine. We believe she did miss cleaning the new mattress cover when it was delivered, but of course the bed linens & duvet cover were freshly laundered. Yes, some of the owners personal items were on several shelves, but there was ample clear shelving for guests, plentiful walk-in wardrobe space, and sufficient empty drawers for short term visitors. I did advise the guests in advance and it is on our website that the second bedroom listed is actually a separate office / also sleeping area with a cot, which then can be used if so desired as a bedroom. This office area also has a separate full bathroom, new washer and dryer, plenty of linen closest shelving and glass doors which open to the secluded wall / bamboo covered front yard. Guests often use this area as space to work with their computers ( shades are on all windows ) on our high speed wireless DSL service. And there also is large pillow / duvet covered floor mattress in the open air loft living room which many guests have also used for sleeping or watching television. We've had many happy guests before, but will take these recent guest criticisms in a positive light and will make every effort to improve the House for future visitors.
