Old wonderful medieval farmhouse with pool in the heart of Tuscany

Bedrooms 5
Space 180 m²
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 - 7 nights

About the property

Ideal for one or two families, a family gathering or a group of friends.

The exclusive farm Spicchiaiolona, now restored, with its two houses “Acasa” and “Il Castelletto”, of which its ancient stone-walls tell you a secular history, lies in the heart and in one of the most beautiful regions of Tuscany 12 km east of Volterra, 20 km west of San Gimignano on the road between Colle di Val D’Elsa and Volterra on top of a hill with a wide panorama including the Monte Amiata and Corsica. All around you’ll see cornfields, vineyards, woods and olive groves. The house is situated on a 10.000 sqm property accessible only by a private street.

The hamlet is 1 km from the closest and very recommendable restaurant, 15 minutes from Volterra and 30 minutes from San Gimignano, an hour from the cultural art-centers of Florence, Pisa, or Siena and also from the refreshing sea.

Acasa on two floors offers you comfortably room for 8-10 adults and is perfect for families or bigger groups. Acasa has 4 big king-size rooms, 1 room (with two separated beds), a terrace, a living room and a big modern eat-in kitchen with a chimney. There is a diaper changing table, highchairs and cots, if needed. Wood, electricity, warm water, 2 bathrooms with shower (and on demand, central heating in every room) are at your complete disposal. The beds are made up and towels are in the rooms.

Whose choice? Acasa is perfect for a family gathering or befriended families. It has as much space as you want to relax, to play, to hike, to go sightseeing or whatever. Enjoy Acasa’s private terrace, where you eat, chat, read or relax or enjoy a glass of wine. With unfriendly weather you can stay in the eat-in kitchen or the living room to play, write, read, discuss, chat or watch TV.

With the guests of Il Castelletto (six at most) you share the pool zone with its big swimming pool of 20 m length and 4 m width, which invites you to bathe, and its pool border of 85 sqm. Above the pool there is a pool terrace and veranda (150 sqm) with a wood-burning pizza oven, a barbeque, a little kitchen and a toilette, which completes our offer. You will either swim and play in the water or sunbath, read, chill out, have a drink, play and dance on the terrace or prepare your pizzas (children love it), cook and eat in the veranda, while admiring an unforgettable view.

The beautiful location and generous hospitality in a relaxing atmosphere, peace and silence, a lot of room for children, a parking space, which is only accessible by a private road, a refreshing swimming pool, the Tuscan landscape with its hills, cypresses, olive-trees, vineyards, cornfields and woods, the sunshine, the brightness, the fragrance, the sound of nature - all this will give you a wonderful holiday, perhaps even a moment of excellence.

Winter in Tuscany: The house is lovely during the winter for a longer stay for guests who are studying the Italian language, art, cultural history or just want to take a timeout. Ask for special conditions.

About Nora & Michael

I am very pleased that you are interested in our home. I myself grew up near Florence and am Italian, a classical philologist. I spent with our four children 17 years in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. By now I am a retired grandmother of three grandchildren.

Tuscany's historic towns, its friendly people, its simple and tasty cuisine, its intense smells and colors had already captivated me as a child and now back to my roots, I am pleased again and over again when I see that guests can share this experience. I want to promise in no case more than I can hold. Michael, my husband and I appreciate your rays, when you arrive after a long and tiresome journey and look forward to spend your vacation at our just discovered home and property.

I would be extremely pleased to be allowed to get to know you personally, your Eleonora

Nora & Michael purchased this house in 1989

Owner's Response: Thank you for your nice words, which make Nora and me flush. We give our best and will continue to do so, but to be fair, it's much more the magic of the place, the south, the history, the culture, the architecture, the pool, the Mediterranean kitchen and the local people that allowed you to enjoy your vacation fully. Looking forward to welcome you as a member of our growing group of guests regularly coming back.

Wonderful landscape, spacious rooms and great hosts

  • 4 of 5

We were very pleased with the house. Clean, having plain but large bedrooms and a nice kitchen. We were a big group of 9 including two children but the house felt spacious. The view from the house and from the garden is really beautiful. Nice pool area too.

Michael and Eleonora were really friendly and made us feel welcome.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your nice words. We are pleased you liked it and you and your children had enough room. It was a pleasure to have you all on the pool area preparing some real Italian pizzas.

A real Tuscan dream

  • 5 of 5

A real country house, impeccably decorated, where people have lived and worked for many centuries. At the top of a very steep hill, it was large in space, very clean, with a very well equiped kitchen. The property's many trees and garden (vines, olive and lemon trees) were very well maintained, the landscape, a dream. An ideal starting point for those who want to visit Pisa, Sienna and Florence. The large pool was a magnet for the children and adults.

A house, a site that was very hard to leave.

Nora and Michael were the best hosts, providing information and arranging reservations for restaurants and wine-tasting.

Their son, Lorenz, facilitated on the Net all the rental details prior to our arrival.

An anchor for a first time rental across the seas.

The house is near Volterra, the perfect Tuscan hill town.

I would recommend this property to everyone.

Great house in the heart of Tuscany!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Spicchiaolano June 2010 for 10 days. We have really nice memories of this time. During the day the view and surroundings are beautifull and exactly what we expected from the Tuscan landscape. In the evening and night the area gets a romantic and magical touch because of all the fire flies that surround the house, a really nice suprise! We have been told the fire flies are only there around the month May and June.

The location of the house is good to discover the nice villages of Tuscany or visit Florance. Our part of the house had a great big kitchen with a nice terras, great for BBQ and enjoying Italian wines, cheeses and sausages till late in the evening. The pool is big and has a great view. The owners are friendly, helpfull and come with nice suggestions for restaurants and day trips. Next to that the Italian people are so nice for small children, you can easily bring them to restaurants and trattoria's and enjoy the nice food!

We would really like to return here some day and enjoy the heart of Tuscany!

Beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at this property in March 2010. The house itself is situated high up in the mountains and is more than worth the slightly scary drive in the dark.

The house itself has a beautiful outlook and is very well presented. The main rooms and bedroom are well furnished with a well equipped kitchen supplying everything you could need.

Sadly we didnt get the chance to try out the pool as it was cold and snowing during our visit but that still didnt spoil the beauty of the property and the surrounding area.

The owners were more than helpful, happy to assist with everything we needed, couldn't fault their hospitality.

i would definitely recommend this property for anyone wanting to experience rural Tuscany with a touch of luxury.

San Gimignano and Volterra, cities that need no description, are located in one of the most beautiful and distinctive locations in Tuscany. Walks in the streets give the feeling to be in another time. One can only fall in love with these places: the soft landscape, the sun, the cypresses, the olives, the wine, the excellent cuisine, the spontaneous life of the people and much more ... Volterra, the city of the winds and the Rocks ', and San Gimignano are always surprising: they are rich in culture, arts and crafts houses. Etruscan, Roman and medieval walls, city gates and tombs, the Roman theater in Volterra, the tower houses of San Gimignano, medieval architecture and a rich selection of museums pamper the art lovers; Alabaster and goldsmith's art tempt you to purchase; Zuppa Volterrana, and wild boar are cooked with the same care as an Aragosta, and you can drink an open table wine as an alternative to a Vernaccia di San Gimignano or Tignanello.

Other activities: bird watching

Horse riding: in the immediate vicinity accompanied riding excursions.

Tennis: in Volterra

Golf: Two exclusive golf courses can be found in Castelfalfi (30 km) and in Bagnana (close to Siena, 50 km)

Cycling: Be aware that the gentle hills of Tuscany are not really gentle!

Climbing: bring your equipment and we'll show you where.

Mountainbike: if you are unlucky, you land in a wild boar herd.
