Moonridge Cottage 'Almost Heaven'...closer than you think! Just 90 min. from both DC and Baltimore; about an hour from Fairfax, tucked away at the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia!
Schedule a weekend in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains and celebrate the arrival of summer - hiking, biking, fishing, rafting, or just relaxing on the screened porch with a good book and glass of wine.
'Moonridge' is one of two art studios of artist and host, Bobby Ericsson, and is available for vacation rental during non-use periods by the artist.
2 bedrooms (master with 4 poster queen bed; 2nd bedroom - 2 singles; sleeper sofa with thick comfy mattress in living room); lots of toys, playhouse, rocking horse in 'kid's room'; huge screened porch with porch swing and settee loaded with comfy cushions - great spot for morning coffee, evening glass of wine, watching the local deer. (porch cushions are stored away during pollen season but furniture still in place). The kitchen is well equipped and stocked with basic staples if you choose to do some eating in.
Area Attractions:: Explore Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, Appalachian Trail, Charles Town Races and Slots, Antietam Battlefield, tubing, canoeing and kayaking on the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, white-water rafting, juried Mountain Heritage Arts and Crafts Festival (Sept.), fine dining, shopping and antiquing in quaint historic towns of Shepherdstown and Charles Town, WV, Leesburg, VA and Frederick, MD; hiking and biking along river roads and C&0 canal ~ or ~ simply relax and enjoy the escape from the city chaos.
Additional Information: Handicapped Accessible: The path to the house from the driveway is not smooth. There is one step going into the cabin. Bathroom doorway and bathroom are narrow. Driveway is steep and can be treacherous during winter months.
This is a very rustic 'prop-your-feet-on-the-furniture' type spot; make yourself totally at home. If you're squeamish about stink bugs, spiders and other little critters, this is probably not the place for you. We're right smack in the middle of the woods on a mountain, and despite having a pest control contract, this is their territory also and they don't give up easily! The cabin was built in the 40s so it's not your aseptic hotel room. It's only about 800 square feet so more than 4 people (and preferably not more than 2 adults) is going to be very tight and I don't recommend it.
Kid Friendly: Toy chest and kid's movies on site; kid's love building forts in the surrounding woods, sleeping on the porch in summertime and wading and rock-hopping in the Shenandoah River. Zip line available locally. There's lots of wildlife visible from the screened-in porch.
Smoking Not Allowed: No smoking on the screened porch either.
Hi; Bobby here. We're Northern Virginia transplants to Wild and Wonderful West Virginia! About 15 years ago we purchased a weekend cabin near Harpers Ferry in the mountains (Shannondale) with a 50 mile view of the Shenandoah Valley below. We fell in love with this beautiful area and wonderful local people, and it didn't take long to switch from weekenders to permanent residents! I quickly discovered an abandoned 'shack' a short hike through the woods below our cabin - no doors or windows, holes in the roof, misc. critters living inside, including a few non-living. I purchased this adjoining property and embarked on a 3 month restoration project to turn it into my art studio. New roof, new heating, new plumbing, new windows, skylights - new everything! Shangri-la-de-da!! Thus, 'Moonridge' was created! All of our friends and family who stayed at Moonridge have absolutely LOVED IT, so we decided to share our delightful little hide-away with all of you! Come, relax, and enjoy! Let me pamper you a bit!
Bobby Ericsson purchased this cabin in 2000
We love the natural beauty of this area, the wildlife, the cultural heritage, the history, the quaint little towns, plus we're only an hour from Fairfax, Va., so even though we feel really remote, there is easy access to the big city. It's really the best of all worlds!
Moonridge Cottage was even more than I had hoped for. My boyfriend and I wanted to do something special to celebrate our Christmas, and thought an out-of-the-way (but convenient) cabin in the woods would be perfect. And it was. I was delighted with the special care that Bobby took to make the cabin cozy and festive. Upon our arrival, the wood stove was burning, the tree decorated, and wine waiting on the table. Fresh bread was served to complete the homey atmosphere. Bobby could not have been more accomodating with our early arrival and late departure. Our stay was wonderful, and will return in the spring to enjoy the next phase of mother nature.
great place - definitely isolated, great porch, lovely place. we had two little kids though and the landscape was hard for them to play in - think steep hill, lots of trees. but that's my bad planning not the property. homeowner was super responsive and it was a great place overall. not really any good restaurant options in Harper's Ferry or close by - unless we totally missed something awesome. Again, not a fault of the homeowner one bit just something to be aware of. but great little kitchen set up so you can cook/get your own groceries and be all set!
My husband and 2 of my dogs stayed here and enjoyed it immensely. The place was very quant and cozy. The art throughout was amazing, as well as the decor. We were close enough to enjoy the local amenities but at the same time, had complete privacy. We ran out of gas the day we were leaving and one of the neighbors was kind enough to sell us some gas, for a dollar a gallon! We would definitely stay here again.
We had such a wonderful time staying at the cottage. It was well equipped with everything we needed and very clean. The beds were comfortable and there was plenty of room for our family of five. There was even enough hot water for 5 people to shower after hiking around Harper's Ferry for the day.
My 6 year old was in her glory having a dollhouse to play with and a rocking horse to play on. My 14 year old artist enjoyed reading through the collection of art books and studying the beautiful art work around the cottage. We saw deer several evenings which was fun and listened to the sounds of nature every time we stepped on the porch. My son loved listening to the different birds and trying to identify them by their call.
Bobby was a most gracious hostess. She was concerned that everything was perfect for our arrival, which it was, and contacted us to confirm we were settled and everything was in order. The candles were lit and the music was playing; what a wonderful welcome after a 4.5 hour trip.
From the cottage we visited Harpers Ferry (15 minutes); Antietam (30 minutes away) and Shepherdstown (22 minutes away). We even took a short trip (5 mintues) to Shannondale Wildlife Refuge to walk along the Shenandoah River in the evening.
We all have fond memories of our stay at Moonridge Cottage.
The Moonridge cabin is charming - furnished and decorated by an artist with a wonderful eye. All the comforts of home are provided. A bottle of wine and other goodies provided by the owner were a cheerful welcome when we arrived. We spent alot of time just relaxing on the screened porch, which overlooks the Shenandoah Valley through the green woods. You fell like you are in the tree tops (and you are) as you watch birds zip by to their nearby nests. The setting is very quiet and the air very clean, a nice contrast to our daily city living. The cabin is near the Appalacian Trail and other outdoor activities (like rafting on the Shenandoah River), if you seek outdoor exercise. Good restaurants and many vineyards (good for picnics, too) are nearby, too. Civil War history abounds in the area. Craft fairs are frequent. I would definitely recommend this property to a friend or relative for relaxation or as a base for outdoor activities.
Stayed at Bobby's cabin for a weekend getaway. The cabin has everything you could need, including excellent wireless internet service and a kitchen fully stocked with basic cooking needs. Bobby left some delicious homemade bread and a bottle of wine for us - much appreciated! The screened porch offered a perfect vantage to enjoy the quiet and the deer walking down the road.
Although the cabin is secluded, we found it convenient to Harpers Ferry and Charles Town. Highly recommended!
