Overview

Central Coast California House Rental Photos and Description

5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, sleeps 10.

The Acorn is located 2 miles south of Carmel across Highway One from Point Lobos State Park - one of the most magnificent and picturesque areas on the West Coast. This property is located on approximately 5 acres on the top of a knoll overlooking Carmel Bay, Pebble Beach and Point Lobos. Surrounded by open space and park land, the Acorn is a very private setting yet only a 5 minute drive to a new Safeway, shopping and Carmel-by-the-Sea shops and dining. Golf, scuba diving, hiking, beaches -- all close by. Big Sur is a scenic drive just 40 minutes south on Highway One. In addition to the main house, there is a charming guest house with full accommodations.

The Main House: The main house features a king master suite with sliding glass doors that provide romantic, breathtaking views of Point Lobos and Pebble Beach and access to the home's expansive deck. There is also a queen bedroom with separate bathroom and dressing room that also has access to the deck via sliding glass doors. Two additional bedrooms each have two twin beds. A sofa bed in the parlor/game room provides additional sleeping accommodations.

Guest House: The guest cottage is a charming, cozy 3-room cottage with a king bed, full bath, kitchen and laundry. This unique cottage provides ultimate privacy from the main house should you so desire. Yet it is close enough to provide additional guest accommodations for friends or family.

Guestbook comments from the owner

To Mark, Patrick & Sara, Diane and Carolyn,

We've just returned to Boston from our family gathering at The Acorn Ranch and I wanted to let you know how much we treasured everything about it and how thankful we are that you're willing to share your special Carmel/Pt. Lobos home. I feel so fortunate to have fond it on VRBO.

For those of us from 1 to 71, it was perfect. The huge grand dining table was the focal point of our days (for meals and for puzzles and games with grandchildren), and epitomized the quality, history, traditions of The Acorn where so many have gathered, grateful for the foresight of Alexander Allan, the Riley family, and the immense talents of the Whislers in bringing the old and the new together to create such a wonderful home.

We were surrounded by history, beautiful furnishing, interesting collections, beautiful Oriental rugs... and then there were the comfortable touches in a beautiful, FULLY-equipped, contemporary kitchen, the George Nelson lights, wood ceilings, expansive glass, Frank Lloyd Wright inspired lanterns/lights, beautiful landscaping and trellises!!

We adults appreciated the quality linens and towels (even beach towels!), the washer/dryer, and so many thoughtful details you provided. The ranch setting delighted our young grandchildren who were entertained endlessly by "Jesse" "Goldie" "Tom" and "Mikey" (the horses), the miniature horses, the deer and turkeys. The expansive house, older and newer, gave everyone space and so many options: a cabinet of games; a library of books, even for the 4 year olds; 2 grassy areas for soccer games; bike riding on the dirt road; adventures to the basketball court, and the back garden with its "quiet time" reading swing and the lemon tree and raspberries.

We grandparents had a quiet get away in the guest house, far from the (too) early a.m. wakings in the house.

We hardly needed to leave the property at all as we enjoyed the spectacular beauty of Pt. Lobos, high above Carmel and our view of the water, but we had 3 great beach days. Pt. Lobos was almost a walk away and we took advantage of that special landscape and CA treasure that your family saved. We had Gibson Beach to ourselves one day - so gentle for the grandchildren who didn't seem to mind the cold water. The Carmel River Beach was great for kite flying, and the Monterey Aquarium was a nice day trip.

Beautiful Home, Gorgeous Views!

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful place, "The Acorn," is reminiscent of old California in all the best ways but certainly has every amenity you would ever need. There is room to sleep 10 (we had 8) and everyone loved the accommodations. We felt embraced by this historic family home we were able to call ours for the week we stayed there. Large kitchen/dining room area with a table big enough for everyone to share meals around complete with stunning rock fireplace, high ceilings, huge windows and ocean views was our favorite place to relax and hang out next to sunny afternoons spent on the large front decks overlooking the ocean. Wonderfully private location yet close to Big Sur and Carmel and everything else on the peninsula. We can't wait to return!

What a nice place and so relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I celebrated our 30th anniversary at Acorn and we are considering going back for our 31st. This is a great place for quiet time with a loved one or with family or friends. The view, location, and comfort are off the charts at Acorn Ranch.

Amazing property for a Big Sur family get together

  • 5 of 5

The Acorn is an immaculate property with enough space for 10. We had the best week staying here in mid-March. Perfect chilly nights turned in to gorgeous sunrises sipping coffee on the expansive deck, watching waves crash on to Pebble Beach. This was a perfect "home base" for taking day trips exploring Carmel, Monterrey, Big Sur Coast... and then coming back and cooking meals in the open kitchen. Plenty of space for adults to all find their corners and relax with a book. Such a great trip, anchored with the Acorn property. thank you for sharing this home!

Best place on Carmel Coast

  • 5 of 5

All of the previous reviews say it all, but I cannot resist writing our own review. Four couples in the main house and couple in the guest house. The house is stunning - the horses, views ,open kitchen dining room and walk across the road to hike in Point Lobos - was the icing on the cake for our daughter's wedding in Big Sur. Our new son-in-law and family grew up in Carmel - and they were equally knocked out by this property. Thank you Whisler Family!

Thank you Thank you Thank you!

We Will Be Back

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have been to Carmel 14 times and this time we decided to bring our 3 adult kids and their spouses and our 2 grandchildren. I looked at almost every property in Carmel and Monterey and finally decided on the Acorn Ranch. And I made the right decision.

We oohhhed and aahhhed over every detail from the minute we drove up. The ocean views were far more spectacular than I had imagined and the decks provided many spaces for people to enjoy their own privacy. It was very obvious that a gifted architect designed and owned the home. Every detail was exceptional - the furniture, the antiques, the artwork, the ceilings, the walls, the skylights, and the fireplaces.

Our family hit all of the incredible sights of Carmel and Big Sur during our stay - Pebble Beach for early morning walks and evening dinner at The Bench overlooking the 18th green. Rocky Point and Nepenthe at Big Sur were highlights and we walked across the street to Point Lobos for some of the most beautiful sights in the world. Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch was a favorite along with Doris Day's Cypress Inn sitting outside by the fire. I would also recommend Casanova for lunch and walking along Scenic Drive.

But with all of the incredible moments we experienced, we carved out time at the Acorn Ranch to sit in the sun overlooking the ocean or eating around the fabulous dining room table. Everyone loved the ranch - and the grandbabies especially loved the cows, horses, turkeys, and the deer.

Mark took great care of us. Answered the phone with our every need and managed to get our toilet fixed within a few hours even though he was out of town for a day. I almost hate to let others know how great it is because I want to keep it our secret. So save us a spot - WE WILL BE BACK.

Awesome home

  • 5 of 5

This property is beautiful, historic, elegantly renovated and functional. The views and surrounding are amazing. Everything works in the home and the house was immaculate. It felt very safe and is easily accessible from Monterey or Carmel. It was an awesome place for our family to stay and gather during the time of my son's wedding in Monterey. The owners are a wonderful family.
