About Julie Ellis/Captain Julie
I bought this home as my 2nd home years ago and while living in Atlanta routinely made trips to Ridgetop on weekends. We loved it and furnished the house with antiques, art and cabin style features. Since then, I moved to Florida and decided to let others enjoy the home as much as we have. I try to get up to Ridgetop once a year and while I am away we have a fantastic couple who take care of the property and are there for our guests anytime they are needed.
Julie Ellis/Captain Julie purchased this Cabin in 1987
Why Julie Ellis/Captain Julie chose Menlo
The view, the view, the view! That's why I originally bought Ridgetop but then I discovered other wonderful things about the home and the area. The house is very secluded with just a handful of homes on the road. Every season is wonderful, although Fall is probably my favorite. Sitting outside, enjoying the colors, and reading a book in front of the gas fire pit is hard to beat. I know you will love Ridgetop as much as I do.
What makes this Cabin unique
Enjoy the view, the oversized hot tub, barbecuing outside, the buckstove that heats the entire house, the walk down the quaint dirt road in front of the house. Sit at the outdoor bar that makes you feel as if you are soaring over Shinbone Valley below. You cannot help but feel at peace and relaxed while visiting Ridgetop.

Epic Holiday in World Class Scenery
Ridgetop is a well furnished and equipped for those staying there on holiday. The immediate locale is lovely, and there is a multitude of exciting places to visit. For instance, it's an enjoyable 50-minute drive along the Lookout Mountain Parkway and ridge tops of several mountains and on down into Chattanooga. We could not visit all the nearby National and State Parks while we were there. There are just too many! We did enjoy DeSoto State Park and the spectacular Little River Canyon National Preserve. We had to postpone visits to the latter over the Memorial Day weekend. All the car parks were full. That shouldn't have been a surprise.
We did enjoy being able to walk our dogs right outside Ridgetop along a quiet gravel road and to be able to take them farther afield too. It was great to be able to relax in the battery of ultra comfortable leather-clad rockers and recliners after all that activity. Truth to tell, we stretched out on the beds for an afternoon nap too – just sublime. All the bedrooms had good karma.
We found that it was worth the 20 drive into Summerville to get groceries and the like. Worth noting too that electronic timekeepers struggle to cope with the proximity of the GA / AL border and different time zones. The car GPS did better than our cell phones. Who cares about that on holiday anyway.
The property is managed locally for the owners who live out of state, and there are one or two items that require some attention and TLC but not to the extent that they impacted on our stay. We would certainly love to go back there.
Life slowed down when we arrived at the mountaintop cabin.... just what we were looking for to get away from our busy city lives!! It was lovely to watch nature all around us... especially the red hawks and the hummingbirds. We are definitely returning to this lovely mountain home.
Couldn’t have been any better.
My husband and our furbabies had a fantastic stay! We had expected to have more people, but, at the last minute, it ended up being just us. We had a great time, and it was a great space! We didn’t need to use the upstairs with only two people, and the master suite with king bed on the main level. That being said, there was a queen bed and full size bed upstairs in the other two bedrooms, and full bathroom between those, so if we had needed it, it would easily have accommodated 3 more adults, or maybe another couple and two kids. Julie was a wonderful host, and answered every question I had in a quick, helpful manner. We had a great time taking in the view, toasting marshmallows on the gas fire pit, (which I never knew I wanted until we used this one every night,) ☺️ and just relaxing in general. If there’s any way the hubby can get off again, and I can talk my parents into going, we’d love to go back this fall, when the leaves change, and show them how beautiful the place is.
My only suggestion as far as a “critique,” would be to make sure you know there are TWO turns onto Marigold Drive, and if you just Google or use GPS to get there, DO NOT TURN ON THE FIRST ONE to the right if you’re coming from Mentone. My little car almost didn’t make it. If you have a truck, it might not matter, but the other end of the road is WAY EASIER to get in and out from the cabin.
In short, it was perfect and we hope to return in the future. ☺️
Great, quiet retreat. Everything you need to get away from the stress, and crazy world.
