I am a custom furniture builder and a welder. I love dogs. I live on the property with my wife and daughter. I love hiking and animals especially dogs. I like being close to nature so living and working on 4 acres just out side Ashland is ideal. I can walk out my front door and take a quiet hike or go to town and see a play.
Margaret or Tom Saydah purchased this cottage in 1996
We chose Ashland because it's beautiful and rural but also offers a lot of culture. It is big in the arts and we are artists. We remodeled a little house on our property with the idea that people can go on vacation and stay in an 'arty environment'.
While staying at the ArtYCottage you can expierence fine art such as custom furniture, metal work and textiles that you can order or purchase, cook a great meal in a state of the art kitchen, soak in the tub, relax on the deck up in the trees or walk out the front door and take a quite relaxing hike or in winter you can ski. Hiking, boating and fishing are all close by. A short drive will take you to Ashland where you have the Ashland Shakespeare Festival, Cabaret Theatre, Oregon Stage wrorks for plays, many good restaurants, wineries galore, shopping, galleries and Lithia Park. Jacksonville just down the road has the Britt out door music festival all summer
This is our second time enjoying the magic and beauty of Arty Cottage. It is truly a privilege to stay at Arty Cottage. The location is perfect for us, just 15 minutes up the hill from Ashland, quiet and peaceful and offers wonderful walks before going in to town for the theatre. We will happily stay at ArtyCottage during our visits to Ashland.
I knew from pictures and reviews that I wanted to check this place out but, I had no idea how wonderful it would be. There really aren't words to fully describe the beauty of the workmanship of the cabin, the furnishings and the quilts. The comfort level was another indescribable wonder--so cozy! I wish I were less honest because I'd really like to say it was awful so I could be sure it was available the next time I was in Ashland, but that would be selfish, so: my advice is to just go experience this jewel of a place.
Side note: The winery down the road is worth a visit, as well! Oh, and bring your binoculars if you're a birder--lots to see!
A perfect cabin - the location is wonderful, up in the hills above Ashland. The interior of the cabin is stunning - all hand crafted furniture and fittings, and feels inviting and cozy. Luckily, the fall weather was warm and sunny, and so we spent plenty of time on the spacious deck in the canopy of the oak trees. Thanks so much Tom and Margaret!
This cottage in the hills above Ashland is very unique. Every piece of furniture is original, as Tom and Margaret are furniture makers. I enjoyed admiring all the furniture, bookshelves, etc. There are gorgeous quilts and blankets throughout (I assume Margaret's talent)! The cottage is well equipped with everything you will need for a pleasant stay.
It is very relaxing to sit on the back deck in the trees. It was my favorite activity until the knats ate me up. (It IS in the woods!).
The upstairs bed (Loft) was incredibly comfortable. And the downstairs bunk bed is a nice little reading nook with good lighting and tons of pillows.
There was a surprising amount of road noise for being out in the country, including some trucks. But it typically gets quiet at night, which is what I was looking for.
All in all , it is a very pleasant stay in a really unique cottage outside Ashland.
This past year I've visited The American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem, the Allison Inn in Newberg and a lovely resort in Zihuatanejo. I have to say Arty Cottage is at a par with these amazing hotels. If you love art, nature and attention to detail, there is nothing better. The owners down the hill were incredibly thoughtful and gave me my solitude when I needed it, and welcomed me for wine when I was feeling social. The furnishings and creative touches are an art lovers' dream! A stay here is an exercise in slowing down to the speed of life. I went into town once but had a hard time leaving this sacred space! I plan to book two more visits in 2016 to enjoy the nearby hiking, the Shakespeare festival with a healthy dose of peace and tranquility.
We stayed two nights in ArtYCottage in October and thoroughly enjoyed it! The cottage is beautifully decorated with original art, furniture and textiles. Even the plumbing fixtures are hand crafted! It is very quiet, and we slept like logs in the comfy bed under hand-made quilts. We found it lovely and relaxing. The only caution I would have for would-be renters is please come prepared to treat the cottage and its furnishings with an extra level of care and respect since the natural wood surfaces and various art objects are easily damaged. The owners live just down the drive and were readily available and happy to help us when we locked ourselves out of the cottage (oops!). I highly recommend ArtYCottage!
