About Margaret or Tom Saydah

I am a custom furniture builder and a welder. I love dogs. I live on the property with my wife and daughter. I love hiking and animals especially dogs. I like being close to nature so living and working on 4 acres just out side Ashland is ideal. I can walk out my front door and take a quiet hike or go to town and see a play.

Margaret or Tom Saydah purchased this cottage in 1996

Why Margaret or Tom Saydah chose Southern Oregon

We chose Ashland because it's beautiful and rural but also offers a lot of culture. It is big in the arts and we are artists. We remodeled a little house on our property with the idea that people can go on vacation and stay in an 'arty environment'.

What makes this cottage unique

While staying at the ArtYCottage you can expierence fine art such as custom furniture, metal work and textiles that you can order or purchase, cook a great meal in a state of the art kitchen, soak in the tub, relax on the deck up in the trees or walk out the front door and take a quite relaxing hike or in winter you can ski. Hiking, boating and fishing are all close by. A short drive will take you to Ashland where you have the Ashland Shakespeare Festival, Cabaret Theatre, Oregon Stage wrorks for plays, many good restaurants, wineries galore, shopping, galleries and Lithia Park. Jacksonville just down the road has the Britt out door music festival all summer

Gorgeous & comfortable Arty Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This cottage in the hills above Ashland is very unique. Every piece of furniture is original, as Tom and Margaret are furniture makers. I enjoyed admiring all the furniture, bookshelves, etc. There are gorgeous quilts and blankets throughout (I assume Margaret's talent)! The cottage is well equipped with everything you will need for a pleasant stay.

It is very relaxing to sit on the back deck in the trees. It was my favorite activity until the knats ate me up. (It IS in the woods!).

The upstairs bed (Loft) was incredibly comfortable. And the downstairs bunk bed is a nice little reading nook with good lighting and tons of pillows.

There was a surprising amount of road noise for being out in the country, including some trucks. But it typically gets quiet at night, which is what I was looking for.

All in all , it is a very pleasant stay in a really unique cottage outside Ashland.

Exceeded all expectations

  • 5 of 5

This past year I've visited The American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem, the Allison Inn in Newberg and a lovely resort in Zihuatanejo. I have to say Arty Cottage is at a par with these amazing hotels. If you love art, nature and attention to detail, there is nothing better. The owners down the hill were incredibly thoughtful and gave me my solitude when I needed it, and welcomed me for wine when I was feeling social. The furnishings and creative touches are an art lovers' dream! A stay here is an exercise in slowing down to the speed of life. I went into town once but had a hard time leaving this sacred space! I plan to book two more visits in 2016 to enjoy the nearby hiking, the Shakespeare festival with a healthy dose of peace and tranquility.

Beautiful, peaceful cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two nights in ArtYCottage in October and thoroughly enjoyed it! The cottage is beautifully decorated with original art, furniture and textiles. Even the plumbing fixtures are hand crafted! It is very quiet, and we slept like logs in the comfy bed under hand-made quilts. We found it lovely and relaxing. The only caution I would have for would-be renters is please come prepared to treat the cottage and its furnishings with an extra level of care and respect since the natural wood surfaces and various art objects are easily damaged. The owners live just down the drive and were readily available and happy to help us when we locked ourselves out of the cottage (oops!). I highly recommend ArtYCottage!

Experienced travelers

The Arty Cottage: It is gorgeous, remote and nice on the eyes. The bed upstairs is very cozy and comfortable. But like every super model, there is more than just beauty when you are looking for a suitable accommodation. This property is 20-25 minutes from Ashland. Furishings are mostly made my hand and impeccable. The loveseat is pretty small and it was hard for two people to get comfortable at once. The lighting is dim throughout the cottage which gave these 50 year old eyes a work out. Be sure to bring your own shampoo/condtioner/lotions and potions, as they do not provide such. Despite these inconveniences the Arty Cottage is one of a kind, exclusive, pristine remote retreat. I even checked out for a cat-nap on the deck (The expanse of the deck is almost the size of the cottage) in the lovely 84 degree October afternoon, before attending a Shakespeare play. Arty Cottage: Prepare for showpeice elegance!

Owner's Response: Not remembering the address and directions and having to hunt through e-mails to try and find them can be frustrating and not a good start to a anniversary weekend especially for experienced travelers! The cottage is a beautiful 10-15 minute drive (7 miles) to Ashland where there is shopping. The amenities are listed on our web site and there is shampoo, conditioner, lotion and hand-made soap. Lighting and comfort are very individual needs. We have lots of well lit nooks for reading but we do not have canned lights throughout. The cottage has a love seat, day bed, king bed and deck with lounge chairs all that can be enjoyed romantically with a significant other. It is always disappointing when people don't fully enjoy the cottage but it is not for everyone.

Just as nice as we had remembered!

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay at Arty Cottage. We have been raving to our friends about it since our first visit, two years ago. I am so glad that it was as beautiful and peaceful as we remembered it. And, of course, Tom and Margaret are added draws. Thank you!!!!!

Nicest cottage ever!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this ever so cute cottage for 3 nites. The grounds were wild and secluded. The house was cute and comfortable. The custom wood work, copper work, quilts and pottery were amazing. Oh to have this house for my own! It's perfect if you don't mind the 20 minute drive up the hill from downtown Ashland, which we didn't. I'm not sure 4 people would fit comfortably. And we were a little disappointed that the internet was sparse (reading emails & web browsing was OK...but no streaming or downloading), and there was no cell signal. Other than that, it was perfect! I would recommend it for a romantic getaway, not for young children or older people who may have trouble climbing the stairs to the bedroom or who might have trouble driving the dark roads at night.

Owner's Response: Just a few comments to clarify. Some cell phones work and if your cell phone doesn't work we provide a land line free of charge for local and long distance. The internet works great for getting e-mail and surfing the web, It is rural internet not Starbucks. We do provide an I - home so you can listen to any music that you have on your phone or pad etc and it is possible to rent movies in town. The cottage is approximately 850 square feet with a 400 square foot deck and we have had many families and 2 couples find it very accommodating.
