The lagoon has held a special place in my heart since the 1950s when my parents, my three sisters, and I would vacation there every summer. Daddy loved his four girls
and wanted us to enjoy ourselves making castles on the sandy beach and swimming in the placid lagoon waters. Now my grandson is enchanted by the lagoon and loves it as much as I do.
In additional to the 20 shady oaks, this home has breathtaking views of the shallow blue water of Little Lagoon. With its sandy bottom and no riptides it is great for children. The riding-walking path across the street meanders from the Peninsula subdivision to Orange Beach. Great golf is just across the street at the Peninsula Golf Club and you are only 10 minutes from restaurants shops and the gulf beaches.
20 Oaks is very private and quiet. A perfect get away!
We had a great time visiting the gulf beaches and staying in Gene's cottage. The cottage was very spacious and clean, the back porch was wonderful, and it was equipped with everything we needed. We could cook, do laundry, and everyone could relax somewhere. The locals are kind and respectful, and the area very family friendly. We will definitely visit again.
We recently spent one week at Gene's Lagoon Cottage with our children and parents and we had a fantastic time! The house was perfect for our needs and was suited to a relaxing and fun filled week! We had more than enough room for the 8 of us. The home was clean and ready for us upon arrival. The kitchen and living area provided great views and an open concept that was warm and inviting. The porch on the back of the house was perfect for relaxing with a cup of coffee and enjoying the weather while watching the kids have fun! The kitchen was well stocked to prepare meals and the bedrooms were accommodating and roomy enough, very comfortable. The layout of the entire place was great for a group with kids.
What we enjoyed most was the peace and quiet and the ability we had to sit on the porch, the dock, underneath the house on the porch swing, or even in the living room and to see the beautiful lagoon and just relax. We did not want or miss the touristy bustle of the areas on the ocean, and with Bon Secour beach right down the road, we still had the beauty of the water without the crowds. It was truly a treasure!
Our family will happily go back to Gulf Shores and we would recommend this home to anyone who wants a calming retreat with plenty of fun things to entertain nearby. We still did all of the usual activities...golf, go carts, LuLu's, etc. But we were always happy to have this"home" to go back to!
My family of four (two 5 year olds) and my cousin's family of four (3yo and 7yo) came here after renting a dump in New Orleans that was different from what was advertised. This house was absolutely spot-on as advertised (and reviewed).
We were in the house for 3 days and never left except to get groceries - it is too hard to take all our kids to a restaurant and we prefer to cook anyway. It is indeed 5 minutes from town - and a major grocery store. There is also an awesome fresh seafood market literally a minute down the street. The house was well-equipped to handle all our meals.
Martha was a great "host" - she lives a couple houses down so she walked over with the key, gave us a little history of the home, and generally made sure we were set up and comfortable.
We mostly ate and hung out in the lagoon which was awesome, especially for our kids. I'm 6'5" and I had to walk out about 100 yards before my knees got wet. Without the kids, out of curiosity I walked close to halfway across the lagoon. Also, if you want the waves and more white sand, only about 3 miles past the house coming from Gulf Shores is the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge off Mobile Street, has free parking and minimal tourists and is pretty great if you like fluffy white sands and would prefer not to contend with the other people vacationing with their kids and buying souvenirs. It was legit. Loved it.
The screened in porch was perfect for our kids to play on while they took a break from the water. It was even more perfect after the kids went to bed. Speaking of, they were comfortable and clean. The house design was great for two families like ours because there are two rooms on either side, with the kitchen and common area between them. Each side has a room with a queen and a room with two twins, as well as a bathroom. So it was like each family had a "wing" of the house. It was great.
Overall, I would highly recommend this house to anyone who wants to relax. Especially if you want to relax, but also have kids. I'm sure the attractions in Gulf Shores are nice too. But we didn't experience those. And we didn't miss out on them with this incredible home.
The beds andl linens were very clean. the temperature control and ceiling fans made for a great night's sleep. The house is decorated very nicely. We would definitely recommend this property.
I took my family of 4 plus another couple with us and the stay was phenomenal.
The kids played in the lagoon everyday and it was nice to not have to worry about anything while they were out there. I'm 6'3" and I waded out 200 yards and still had shoulders above water. The 3 year old could go out past the dock and was only waist deep.
The house is beautiful and the screened in porch has to be the highlight. We spent all our time in the cabin out there. It is roomy enough for everyone to enjoy and not feel crowded. And no matter how hot it got the porch was always breezy and relaxing.
The cottage also feels isolated yet in 5 minutes you can be in town shopping or on the actual beach swimming in the gulf. Plus there is a golf course less than a mile and the ferry is 20 minutes away over to dauphin island.
We can't wait to go back!
There are no words to describe our experience at Gene's Lagoon. We had our daughter's wedding reception there on 6/6/15 and everything was PERFECT. The screened porch area served as the ideal place for the food setup and the open downstairs as the sitting/eating/dance area. The neighbors on both sides of the house were fantastic too, especially Dr. Finklea and his beautiful wife, Sharon. Dr. Finklea even joined us and took pictures at the reception. I cannot say THANK YOU enough to everyone (especially Martha) for being so accommodating. The house truly met our expectations and a whole lot more. The bedrooms and baths being split were perfect for our guest. It is definitely a wonderful place to sit and relax (I finally got to do this on Sunday morning and evening). I highly recommend Gene's Lagoon to anyone that needs a place to get away, but still close enough for the conveniences of shopping and of course eating great seafood.
The Fort Morgan peninsula is filled with local flavor and offers unique access to Mobile Bay, Little Lagoon and the white Gulf beaches. The area is great for people who want to be away from the crowd yet close to shopping, entertainment and sports activities. The Bon Secour National Wildlife Preserve offers a wonderful hiking trail and birdwatching opportunities. Three golf courses are within a few minutes' drive. History buffs will enjoy the ruins and museum at Ft. Morgan and her sister, Ft. Gaines, which is a ferry's ride across to Dauphin Island.
